We've been testing the latest D-Max pick-up with its new 1.9-litre four cylinder diesel engine.
Available in 2x4 and 4x4, either as a single cab, extended cab or double cab and with either a six-speed manual or optional six-speed automatic.
There are six trims to choose from including Utility, Eiger, Yukon, Yukon Nav+, Utah and Blade.
We took the Double Cab with automatic in Utah spec for a test on and off-road around North Yorkshire.

I find the interior looks really nice, a bit better than the L200 that I'm biased towards. Love the monstrous bonnet look the dmax has

Recently bought the D-max 2.5L LSX diesel, hoping to pick it up from the garage tomorrow :-D Great review by the way.

maybe it's not built for tough terrain but I already bring my 3.0 Vcross into its limit on a rough off-road but it functioned very well and it still can go through without any problem. it's not only about the truck, but also about off-road driving skill.

Man this thing is more capable off road than the Land Cruiser Prado.... so that's saying something. Isuzu FTW!

I have detected by my Isuzu, that it is REALLY EXTREME EXTREME EXTREME CAPABLE IN ROUGH OFFROAD TERRAIN REALLY SMOOTH , EASY & IT DOES MAKE OFFROAD TRACKS paradise like smooth, you had feeled nothing i couldn't believe what i had seen, because the ways was that extremely steep and big holes, you wouldn't dare u to go there for szre with your feeds you would hurt you badly on such a road, you per feeds would with garanty slip badly & fall but this Isuzu 2017 swear above as this rough terain is been absolutely NOTHING. Since this moment i had a high respect for this Isuzu D 3 LITRE CAR. But i have at present only the crappie poor driving & riding Ford Ranger pickup as a comparison, and this Ford rangercrap is so terrifying bad compared to my Isuzu, but a Toyota Prado, Hilux.... i actually did thought is ne NUMMERO UNO in OFFROAD capabilities you don't think so???? Do u have experiences , comparisons between prado & Isuzu D...??? Let us know about it.

there are a number of engines around, but didn't know about the small! 1.9 ltr!!! where I live, in Norway, the truck has a 2.5 twin turbo 163hp/400nm, driving a 2015 Hilux 3.0d4d arctic trucks 37 inch wheels myself, I like the look of the Izuzu, but being a tall guy, the Isuzu offer poor comfort for me... hence the choice of truck. cheers:-)

Bikerman 690 hi there and wonderful to hear from you. In the U.K. the 2.5-litre has been replaced by the new 1.9-litre but looking at Isuzu Norway website this appears to be the same situation and the 2.5 has been replaced by the smaller unit too Hilux is a might vehicle, though.

The VW Anorak only has a 2.0 litre twin turbo and that seems OK, although the VW is not my cup of tea.

I am looking to buy a new pick-up, therefore I've test driven the new L200, Navara D-Max and HiLux. The L200 had surpisingly stiff suspension, a dated automatic gearbox and a somewhat cramped interior. The Navara had a design flaw on the bonnet where water collected in vacuum pockets and was blown back on the windscreen every time i hit the brakes. Very annoying. But the my biggest disapointment was the D-Max. I drove the new 1,9 automatic. It was the loudest engine I've ever heard in my life! when I put it in gear and pushed the gas pedal, it sounded like i was grinding the gears. I almost had to yell to the passenger to compensate for the intense engine noice. It had a too tall gear ratio, so when I was doing 70km/h it was shifting down to 4th and doing 2000 rpm at the slightest indication of anything but a down hill. What tiny about of torque the engine has is not available before 2000 rpm, so doing anything led to the car having to run the engine at what´s in my mind excessive engine speeds. So the HiLux it is. It´s absence of power will have to do. everything else compensates for it.

I can't afford the 3.2 due to taxes and the 2.2 is a ZSD Puma block, that I dont really have the best experiences with. The Ranger is a really nice car, but I don´t want to own another ZSD Puma engine.

Adaam Hmdan : Nah, I am pretty sure i wont be happy with the Raptor. I don´t care much for V8´s and speed and the payload is pitiful. The Raptor has none of the qualities that I look for in a car. I´m sure it is plenty fun, but I wouldn't like to own it.

Torvikholm the new one has a V6 - tiwn turbo - 10 speeds - eco boost - aluminum body the fuel economy is much better than the old one

At last a road tester that quotes the price as Plus VAT, appreciating that 90%+ of these will be bought by professional people and companies that qualify for VAT rebate and probably tax relief off it for their business. You should forget the combined cycle though and emphasise the Urban official figure, which should be just about achievable on a careful long unladen drive. These are very popular workaday pickups in the UK, but nothing whatsoever to get excited about. They do tow 3.5 tons and the six speed automatic is going to be an ever more popular option. With the price of a reasonably specified LR Discovery5 at around three times one of these before VAT, pickups such as this are becoming increasingly popular dual purpose vehicles instead. The best of them perform very well and, despite their 1 ton payload on top of a leaf sprung rear axle, ride tolerably well. The Isuzu hasn't been one of the most comfortable passenger carriers until now though and this doesn't seem, at first glance, to move the game forward any in that respect. Automatic transmissions have really come of age in the last two years are an increasingly popular choice in the segment. Quite why Isuzu chose to buy in the six speed when they could have skipped it and fitted the eight speed for greater refinement, performance and fuel economy, beats me. Nissan I think fit a seven speed and VW an eight speed auto. Aisin Warner, who supply Isuzu, have an eight speed transmission in production and fit it to Toyota. Lexus and Audi models, just as they did the six speed until superseded. Cost? Maybe.

I believe each company has their own deals for the parts and preferences. 2000rpm at 70mph sounds great to me

I'm interested to know which UK model you tested - the Sat Nav on yours seems much closer to the original setup and quite frankly much better than the silly sit up and beg 9 inch version that looks like an iPad which has a cobbled hazard light button and blocks the use of a Digi Tachograph in the dash top bin

Drove the 3.0 diesel.fast but didn't like when i let off the gas pedal it lagged for a sec or 2.i had the basic radio and aux sucked.

The Nissan Navara/NP300 should be better with its multilink rear suspension and less agricultural in its delivery of both power and performance. Will we see a test drive review soon?

I am looking at trading in my current 63 plate for this new model this year , isuzu do the option of pedders suspension which I will definately have fitted . i am only changing to have the new lower ratio gearbox as the current box is pretty shocking for towing with.

If you are looking for a lower gear ratio, I fear you´ll be disappointed. For the automatic the final drive is the same 3.727 for both the 5 speed and the 6 speed. The new 6 speed AC60 do not have a much lower gear ratio than the old A750 unit. The difference is no more than 0.08:1 between the two. The new gear box do on the other hand have a much taller top gear. Toyota has responded to this by going from a final drive of 3.727 (same as Isuzu) in the old model with automatic, to a final drive of 4.100 in the current model. That in combination with the new 1.9 liter engine having less torque and at a higher engine speed than the old 2.5 and the result isn't much to be desired. In my opinion.
