Orange man bad! Football team good! These were the bold convictions we fearlessly carried into Super Bowl LI, the first-ever Super Bowl imbued with real political heat. Millions of us jumped on the Falcons’ bandwagon, and we all had a very good time. God bless our big old goofy trickster bird.
This is part seven of a seven-part series.
Written and hosted by Jon Bois and Alex Rubenstein
Directed by Jon Bois
Produced by Alex Rubenstein
Additional contributions by Joe Ali and Steven Godfrey
Rights specialist Lindley Sico
Secret Base executive producer Will Buikema
Secret Base managing editor Ryan Nanni
Corrections:
55:27 -- That's Chris Hogan, not Kevin.
1:20:40 -- That 20-0 score was at the end of the first quarter, not halftime.

Another amazing part of this Super Bowl was that it was a complete blowout and most people check out--talk to friends, go back to drinking, go home... but because we wanted to watch Pats to fail so badly, we didn't quit on the game. If they had collapsed against any other team at any other time, this would've been a "I went to sleep and found out the next morning" event. Instead, we all stayed up to watch it and we all got kicked in the nads because of it. Another incredible detail by the bird.

The sequence where two Falcons fans discuss the futility of their sports team as, visually, the opponent marches down the field to deny them the championship. Wow. Just incredible. Unless you're a fan of a team that wins something, you know that feeling. The utter hatred mixed with unbridled joy. Supporting a team is emotional abuse. Every time you quit, in horror at how they treat you, they do something extraordinary and pull you back in. For every 9 horrible moments, 1 reminds you of why you love them. I'd love to get away, I know I can't.

1:13:00 is my favorite. There's always a moment in these histories where Jon, after looking at a horrible team, just starts to ignore it and decides to judge them by completely different metrics. I'm a Falcons fan from the A. I have put off watching this ever since it was released. The trauma of that heartbreak still lingers. It's like the city itself still feels almost unworthy of championships. Atlanta United aside, it's hard to see any Atlanta fanbasr really allowing themselves to believe. The opening 10mins of this have shown me such a knowledge and appreciation of the city, it's fans, and the silent racial and social discrimination that bubbles under the surface that I feel like I can finally watch this. I know you guys get it. You understand the beautiful imperfections of our city and team, how so many things could be changed for the better, but how we thrive despite them. Thank you. Honestly, I think that may be the best illustration of the Patriots you can possibly draw up. They don't care about your stories. They don't care about your hopes. They don't care about your emotions. They don't have sympathy nor empathy for anything or anyone. They are simply a cold machine, programmed to win and only win. Everyone else is simply an obstacle - a thing that only exists to be beaten. If a long tragedy has to be prolonged in order for New England to achieve their goal, then so be it - that is their problem, not New England's.

I'm a Jets fan. I remember watching this game, and as soon as the Patriots went up to 9 points, I felt my heart sinking. You can literally see it on the sideline. The Patriot's bench is probably the best tell of whether or not they win. After their second score, even though they were still down 19, things suddenly got more energetic, there was way less yelling and more buddy-buddy action as defense and special teams started chatting with each other prior to each unit getting in the field. The mood shifted on the Pat's sideline, and it was as if the Falcons ceased to exist. It's a more familiar sight than you'd think; any team that's blown a lead to the Pats has seen it. In that moment, down by 19, they had already won.

@roguishpaladin
@roguishpaladin 3 года назад
@@SmugTomato It's interesting to see how the football establishment managed to give the Pats a bad name in the intervening time period. After all, in 2001 the Pats were indeed lovable underdogs. Remember how they ran onto the field as a team when no one else did that? And, of course, they've proven that several football truisms haven't mattered (for example, Patriots teams have never been huge yardage teams, instead focusing on turnover differential and moving the sticks, which makes those high yardage QBs who are supposedly better, like Peyton Manning, look flawed in retrospect). Because they buck the old guard a little bit, I think the old guard has bristled back at them and sought to make mountains out of molehills (the camera incident) or out of flat ground (the supposedly deflated ball incident, and remember who was the chief person chasing that down? A former Colts VP, that's who). And, of course, Kraft made other owners look bad by paying for his own stadium rather than making Massachusetts pay for it. Even here, in this series, somehow the Pats are being cast as the symbol of red states in 2017, when they come from a blue state and the Falcons come from a red state. I mean, c'mon, the Harambe meme is more often invoked by right-wingers with a lack of sympathy for animal welfare.

@@roguishpaladin Like I said, the story of the New England Patriots is one that really deserves to be explored and spoken of in a much deeper light than what it has been given. Its crazy how one playcall led to the fall of the Hawks as an elite team. That being said the Hawks defense deserves blame for that loss. They gave up two crucial TD drives in the 4th. For me there is simply no excuse for that. An end of game goalline turnover is heartbreaking but they got bailed out by Kearse to even had a real chance to win at that point. The Falcons made a lot more mistakes and missed more oppurtinies to lose SB 51 but the entire Hawks team deserves shame for their 4th quarter performance. When they needed to do their best they folded and thats how they should be remembered.

Aside from my family, I have two great love affairs that have lasted well over 50 years...the Braves and the Falcons. I love music, cinema and literature but not with the same intensity as my love for my two franchises. They don't judge me and, with the exception of a couple of work stoppages, they've never left me. I can't say the same for an ex-wife, many friends or treasured objects. Friends move on or pass away. Objects wear out or break. I don't know if I'll live long enough to see the Falcons win a title. I know how it feels to win a World Series but, somehow...it didn't matter. What matters is that they play, that they try their hardest and that they represent my hometown with character and pride. Falcons (and Braves) fans are my extended brothers and sisters and I've enjoyed reading the comments of "family" that I've never met. Don't be broken, please. It broke my heart to read that. Keep watching, keep cheering and keep hoping. I come from the same city as Julian Edelman, and went to the same high school as Tom Brady. I do feel bad for how much this Super Bowl hurt Falcons fans and Patriots haters, but they can't take away the pride I felt when Edelman made that outrageous catch.

Patriots fan, but this series really captured my attention. Love the history and hearing about this shining moment from the other side of things lol. All I ask for now is a series like this on an NHL team (maybe Buffalo or Vancouver, someone with extreme highs and lows, and a long history).

As short as their history has been, San Jose would be perfect for this. They were amongst the most consistently talented and successful teams for such a long time and for such a young team, and yet for all the success they had, their history is nothing but agonizing heartache. It would make a perfect fit. Also if they instead go with NBA which I suspect they will, The Suns or Pacers would be great.

I have never cared about american football in my entire life, nor did i know much of its ruleset. And yet, simply because of that famous Super Bowl game that everyone in the world heard about (which is pretty rare), and because it's Secret Base, I watched this entire series, and I can't believe how good this last episode is. A team I didn't care much about, ended up making me feel almost sick. Jon showing the chart, "cheering", it let all that dread seep inside me, until that last Patriot run in OT. Where others described their pain, dragging me in with them. And then, after just enough time, for all the sadness to set in, Jon made me laugh again. That goofy bird. Thank you Secret Base. Extremely entertaining.

Something changed in me that night, I sit here and watch this video and can relive every moment of elation I felt that night. Robert Alford's pick 6 was the moment where it all made sense. From crying in my room as a young 8-year-old when Michael Vick was arrested, to the falcons blowing their brains out against Colin Kaepernick and the Niners. it was finally all worth it, the birds had finally done it, one of the greatest offenses in NFL history, a team of destiny it seemed, had the greatest player ever on his knees, to no avail.

I am 46 years old and have lived in Atlanta my entire life. Die hard Atlanta fan. I have exactly 2 major championships to hang my hat on (thanks, Braves!) an MLS championship (Hooray, I guess?) and one NCAA Football championship (GT in 1990. I am not a UGA fan.). I have had not one but TWO NHL teams taken away from me due to bad owners (you guys should do a documentary on THAT.). I have suffered as much as any fan of a particular city's teams really can. Your documentary was great.... but it made me cry. I hope you're happy. Jerks. Seriously though... this is a fantastic piece of sports history and the entire series has been a (very depressing) treat. Good job!
