Glad to see your video being shared on the Steve Hoffman TV forum. Spot on! Many thanks! Just joined the SHTV to learn more about the ZZ Top boxset I am eagerly awaiting to receive, and with the hope to find music lovers and vinyl hobbyists for learning and sharing knowledge and passion for music. Honestly, I am quite shocked about the amount of frustration and enviousness resulting in aggression, hatred and personal insulting I am seeing there. I.e. some people did not want the boxset but attack others who have it, or the label. Others wanted it, did not get it and all of sudden discredit the label, the music, and those who like it. Others luckily got it and are ranting about an eventual unnumbered repress. Holy smoke! I doubt that this is what Mr. Hoffman intended for his platform given that we respect freedom of speech. Seems that there is a virus going around which is much worse than Covid. (Wasn't there a science fiction movie on the hatred virus?) And one can only assume that the acting of some political figures around the world play role model roles here. Love and Peace, and Music may still help ...

From the 70's to about 2005 if you were in anyway connected to the music industry ( including retail ) you could relatively easily receive multiple copies of promotional albums , cds & cassettes. When I worked at Rhino & Moby Disc I would receive a promo of lets say the new Oasis from a sales rep , a rep who put up displays , a mailing list & the alternative music rep. Thats one for me & 3 to trade in for imports or older records. It was a perk & it was how one built a large collection without spending exorbitant amounts of money.

I think it's mainly that people feel duped when they jump on buying something thinking "there will only be 5000". To me, it doesn't really matter. You still have the "special" numbered edition.

Greatly needed video Mazzy. You’re spot on about “Editions”. When the Black Sabbath releases at VMP and Rhino both sold out quickly, there was mass complaints that there wasn’t enough pressed and that the aftermarket skyrocketed. Then, both announce a repress and the complaints shift to “it’s not fair”. For those that grabbed the limited numbered edition, yours will always be a limited edition release. Unless you’re trying to flip, there’s nothing to be upset about. The moral of this story should be, you can’t make the internet happy. Someone will always complain about something. I rush-purchased the limited edition and I’m happy to have my copy, I am also happy that others can enjoy this fantastic reissue without breaking the bank. ☕️

A great roar, lion! And inclusive, even for people like me who paid those inflated 1st and 2nd market MoFi prices in Europe with an AAA expectation to justify the spend. I love ZZ Top 70s output since I was 15, and gifted myself with the box for my upcoming birthday. I have been forewarned as to the customer service and packaging quality of Rhino, and I strongly hope that they will not let me down in my first purchase. Those direct sale only from the US business models make it extremely expensive for us fans outside the US. But it is the music and sometimes being stupid :-)

Nice video explaining the meaning of “edition”. To me, as yourself, it’s about the music and quality of the mastering, pressing, and to a lesser extent although it’s lovely to have, the materials used for the sleeve. I’ve never bought a record to sell on and make a few quid, they’ll stay with me to enjoy until I leave this mortal coil. Keep up the great videos.

Mazzy, you are right! An edition is an edition. I just bought a D.G. Original source ( non numbered) it's not the same product as the numbered. The quality is the same.... except for the number it's the identical recording. So if your ass hurts... too bad. Understand what you are purchasing.!!!

I agree with you 100% on everything. But what I criticise about RHINO is that their normal programme is available everywhere in the world. Now they're making a series called Rhino High Fidelity, which focuses on high quality, and suddenly it's only available online in the USA. For Europeans, for example, these records are incredibly expensive. The joke is that the series is pressed in Germany, shipped to the USA and we Europeans have to order in the USA. So the LPs are now going back across the ocean one by one. Why is that? Is this a pretence of exclusivity? Maybe, but IMO this is a slap in the face for all buyers outside the USA.
@mazzysmusic
@mazzysmusic 2 месяца назад
Yes that is an issue. In the case of the Black Sabbath catalog , Rhino only has the rights for North America, so they couldnt sell it there anyway. A better question for me would be; why don’t all the euro based labels, who have a lot of original master tapes, create their own series? Are there any ?
@theheepster
@theheepster 2 месяца назад
@@mazzysmusic Yes there are some, but it's more Classic and Jazz. Most of the Rock Labels today are in US or Sony hands. A great Label Speakers Corner will quit, because they didn't get any new licenses from the Majors. We will see what happens in the future, with the fine small labels in Europe like SAM Records, ERC and the other boutique Labels.

I really MISS Type 55. I Contact printed in a lith print chemical process, so cool. I think the confusion to the lay person is that it says "limited edition", and they assume that it means only ONE edition, and not an edition of a limited number. Buy the music because you love it, not because you think a numbered edition is an investment, fools errand. I am not, was not, financially butt hurt by MOFI. I AM intellectually and ethically offended by their BEHAVIOR in handling their being caught deceiving customers. I will not reward that behavior with money to them. I will not apologize for having standards and not doing business with companies that do not match them.

Subtitle this "Mazzy gives it to ya straight" cos most recordings are limited although the most popular tend to stick around and after a period will emerge again. As someone who bought classical music on vinyl I can remember things going in and out of stock frequently and as for classical cds in the first couple of years it was murder to trying to find a store with the title you wanted! The most in demand recordings do come back because companies realize they can make money from you by making it available again - The Nick Drake boom in recent years shows how what was at risk of being a footnote in music no longer is - but if you want it badly, then as with most things in life you gotta hand over the money and buy it. I'd agree for personal reasons, sadly too much in the world that warrents our attention right now than just "goodness they're pressing an extra 2,000 copies of x".
@Jonny_C73

I agree with some of your points, namely who cares if a “limited numbered edition” gets repressed as a standard edition . The problem I have with what Rhino is doing here, is that they are not at all prepared to handle the built-in defect rate of vinyl (and shipping damage). When they tell a customer that they can’t replace a defective Black Sabbath because they are sold out, when in fact they are sitting on another few thousand unnumbered copies…that’s bullshit. There is nothing at all limited or unique about the actual record itself…it’s only the cover that’s “special”. They could very easily ship that customer only the record, like AP does or The In Groove does, and that customer would be able to keep his limited numbered edition…because he’s still got the cover. But they won’t do that. They require you to send everything back first, and if they have the exact same inventory they will replace it, otherwise they issue a refund. When they chose to do a 5 record box set, well anyone who has a single defective record out of the five is SOL.

Having collected records for most of my life (unfortunately, I sold my Linn LP-12 and my record collection several years ago) as well as having worked on the retail front of the record/music industry (The Record Factory, Wherehouse Records & Tapes and Spirit Records from 1985 to 1991) I do understand the frustration of the record collector. You are spot on as to your overview of limited editions, numbered editions, etc. Unfortunately, I don't know how much more you can say or explain to some of these "butt hurt" (your words) record collectors that would placate them. I am now knee deep into surround/immersive high rez audio (I stil listen to 2 channel audio, though) and buy only physical product (NO steaming) but I was tempted to buy Rhino's new High Fidelity Records releases including the Black Sabbath and ZZ Top box set. I detest flippers (aka opportunists) and ultimately did NOT want to take away a pressing from someone else just because I wanted one. Music is to be enjoyed and having a release just to "have it" and it just laying up against the wall just seemed selfish to me. The kind of transparency that I DO feel important is: 1) accurate credits of participants/performers/packaging AND recording/mixing/mastering/producing & engineering personnel 2) recording methods (analog/digital/protools, etc) 3) when & where the recording(s) took place and 4) how the recording was transferred to the medium that I chose to buy (vinyl, CD, SACD, Blu-ray, etc). Particularly in today's environment/market, I am stoked to see many of these reissue programs being successful. That's the ONLY way the record companies (big & small) will continue to release new physical products. Hold them accountable for customer service, shipping methods and quality control of their products. Be grateful that their products are selling thus necessitating additional product runs as success equals additional physical product support and releases. We ALL win!

I can’t wait till the new abraxas unnumbered edition comes up 🤫 I think maybe they had so many damaged in shipping they had to print more sleeves etc. so what the hell the tool can handle 5000 more records…. Let’s rock! I doubt Kevin cut extra lacquers? Manufactured collectibles are not a good thing in general. “Numbered” editions are manufactured collectibles imho. So many people panned this version anyways. Mike Ingroove says…. It’s the best version. Who knows? But I love it. Well, one thing to remember is maybe that the numbered edition was the first…so if they are using the same tool maybe there is some sonic change (doubtful). Numbered edition is for sure to stoke FOMO. The record company goal is to make money. So they will do all sorts of things. I don’t “invest” in records but there is a reason OG are so expensive. Rock on Mazzy 🖖. I forgot to mention….maybe they would print some more cars. People loved that one too.

I have very few UHQRs, mainly because they're overpriced and I really don't care for the 45 rpm format. I would have much preferred the Steely Dan albums as a 33 rpm box set (as AP had previously done for the CCR catalogue) but I get it - AP, MoFi and others are limited by their licensing agreements. I'm sure that the UHQR 'Aja' sounds very bit as great as the VC says it does but I don't much care (it sounds pretty nice on SACD anyway), and I think I've shaken off that whole 'fomo' thing...

Leaving aside the fact that “butt-hurt” is just a term used to bully someone who doesn’t feel like you do, the fact that you’re not “butt-hurt” simply means that this issue isn’t one you give a rat’s ass about. Ok, that’s fair. However, many people do care about it. And when it happens, it calls into question the integrity of the company involved. (No one sued Mofi just for the fun of it.). Whether it crosses a legal line or not is for the lawyers to decide. However, in the case of Rhino (whose over-sized album covers, poor packaging, industry-worst shipping times, etc., have legitimately earned them the ire of their customers) they marketed a limited product and then reneged on that. I suppose if you look only at the single case of the Black Sabbath release, your opinion may be more on point. However, looking at the history of the High Fidelity releases, no other release in that series has received a second printing, including the highly sought after initial Cars release. All of that history generated certain expectations that Rhino then backtracked on. Can you imagine if Craft or ERC did that? No? I can’t either. They made their decision and stuck to it. Could they sell more of their product if they repressed them? Absolutely. But they don’t because of their corporate integrity and the fact that their customers mean something to them. In the case of Craft, they adjusted by increasing the numbers in their limited runs. But, last time I checked, they weren’t pressing any more Yusef Lateef Eastern Sounds small batch LPs. That’s how you maintain integrity in your business model and show your customers you value them. So, while I respect the fact that your opinion is your opinion, mine is you’ve missed the mark on this issue.

So your opinion is just one mans opinion but those with the opposite view are just butthurt? Personally if these record companies are going to do limited editions they should follow the boutique blu-ray companies model. Release the LE and when sold out release a standard edition which loses stuff from the LE. If you release a 5000 limited numbered edition of something, then when they are sold out release it again, with the only difference being there's no number on it, what's the point of the numbered edition? Arguing that basically it says limited edition numbered release therefore we can the make it again unnumbered is disingenuous. As far as printing more copies of a limited edition because it sells out quickly being ok, I disagree. If it sells out quickly then tough. They shouldn't have called it a limited edition. They just want to have their cake and eat it too (and yes I think it's a stupid expression because who doesn't, but I didn't invent it).
