You mean SSI - which is for senior and or disabled Americans. SSDI is for people who had retirement benefit through their work place upon an injury on the job. Based on what was that worker's income.
SSI is a grant for disabled or elderly people who are either uninsured or under insured for Social Security. SSDI is Social Security Disabled Individual. It’s a disability benefit that a worker pays into the Social Security Administration while working and is basically your retirement benefit given to you early because you became disabled.

This Social Security Expansion Act is endorsed by me! I live on Social Security and a pension of $165/month. There have been times when I only had enough money to eat two weeks a month or once daily for the whole month. There were times when I could supplement my inadequate food budget with food from a food bank, but much of what was available there was forbidden on a diabetic diet. Ii was one of those who had to chose between food or medicine. I got quite slender. I finally got to be 80 years old and I finally was poor enough and old enough to qualify for Medicaid and food stamps. Then inflation hit. I just spent $80 for food. Thank God I had food stamps. There was no meat in my basket of groceries except one Polska Kielbassa sausage. There were berries which are expensive, but they are the only desert I can have that has no artificial sweetener in it. The rest was dairy, eggs, whole wheat bread, veggies, four nectarines and two frozen no sugar added dinners. The rest was bleach, sandwich bags, some super glue and diabetic icecream. Yes, there is such a thing! Without this act in no time I will be eating once daily again. That's no good for diabetic people. We need to watch what and when we eat. I hope this Act goes through, but with Republicans being who and what they are, I have no real hope. But I will call my two Senators and my Conbressman right away and email them daily on the issue. Will you do the same?

The push to privatize this program is ridiculous. We can’t trust Wall Street and any institution I’ve seen that was privatized has gone to hell. Especially care for active duty and retired military and their families. The civilian medical infrastructure doesn’t exist to care for those pushed out into the community network. Incredibly wasteful to not use what is already built and was well maintained on bases. The VA has been attempting to expand and update facilities for years. Staff should be hired and paid well for retention for both systems. Civilian clinics and hospitals need a better, consistent, and guaranteed investment regardless of local $$$. There should never be an area where no care is accessible. Private owners should be penalized when profits rank higher than quality care. Any public funding should require them to accept all medical coverage, period. For example.

The Government siphoned money from Social Security as a "Loan", some years ago. Have they paid that back? Did it include Interest like any Loan would carry?? If cuts need to be made, maybe more of the Unfulfilled Defense Contracts should be reconsidered!?
Your first question is what I have wanted answered for years. Also heard this was done more than once. I'm sure there are records with amounts and dates the money was taken. Are there records of repayments and their dates if any were made? Why is this not made public? It is NOT the government's money to use. Workers and their employers paid this money to be returned to the worker when eligible. Elected officials lowered the amount with held then complained it was going broke. How stupid do they think we are? It's obviouse if you lower the amount contributed the fund will be lower. That was an insipid move on their part. Don't blame the program blame the legislators that sabatoge it.
The cost of fighting WW2 was borrowed from social security and has never been paid back. There have been plenty of other instances where money was taken and never repaid.

Social Security has not kept up with the cost of living for the last 50 years and Congress should be ashamed of how it's taken care of it's elderly population. I have $1200.00 to live on monthly. I get $20 monthly in food stamps. For the past nine years I've not been able to work because I've had to take care of my Mom with no help. She finally passed in February of cancer and Alzheimer's. Now I have lung disease and breast cancer and I'm expected to live on 1200.00 a month. One medication I have to take cost $600.00 a month. You tell me how I can afford an apartment and food on $600.00 a month? There are no low income apartments available in my state. The waiting list is seven years. So shame on you for not helping us, and leaving us to die in homelessness and poverty. May God have mercy on your souls.

Social Security is great, until there's a problem. My Mom had an issue come up after my Dad died, wrote multiple letters to multiple offices and has gotten zero replies in over 6 months. Unfortunately, the program needs some major operational improvements if they're ok with someone living in poverty due to their mishandling of a case. Luckily she has me and my siblings to help her.

Social Security is how WW2 was funded, and it has been their slush fund ever since. It has never been repaid. They made oil & drug companies wealthy, while leaving our disabled & elderly homeless. As a disabled veteran of 40 years, I've been homeless for the past 30 years, living in my car, on SSI.
A good amount of the seniors now living in poverty are ineligible for Social Security. Increasing the group that can get Social Security would do wonders.

I thought I had saved enough to live on, with SS supplementing. But the vast increases in the cost of living over the past 20 years has wiped that out much faster than I expected. With only my SS to live on now, I see that it's not only those that didn't make savings, but also those that didn't account for such devastating increases in the cost of living. In just 2 years the cost of gas has doubled, which only affects the poor, keeping us unable to crawl out of our poverty, while the wealthy get rich by soaking up all our savings and monthly income. I can't afford health care, even the $150 that I would have to pay is beyond my reach if I expect to eat at least once a day. This is the richest nation in the world, and Biden has found billions to help the wealthy save their Hamptons beaches from global warming while not managing to have them pay taxes, but hasn't found a penny to help those of us who can't afford healthcare.

I agree that the cap should be removed. This would cause some redistribution of wealth towards those who need it most and who do not have the lobbyists and money to form tax regulations that are written only for the wealthy.

I just retired. I was eligible for SSN in February. I waited on the phone for hours and after three separate tries I was able to make an appointment. On the appointment date and time no phone call. I then went into the SSN office which just reopened because of the cerveza sickness. Waited in line for a long time after being patted down and having my document bag searched. Only to get yet another phone appointment. This time I got the phone call and spent over two hours going over my entire work/payroll history. It was an inquisition where I mostly answered that it has been decades and I don't remember or I don't know. He found what turn out to be a payroll mistake by one of my past employers. If they have a problem with third party compliance than they need to contact the employer directly. Not me. Somehow, I'm suppose to know the inner working of a past employer's payroll department and somehow explain it in detail. All I know is I get a direct payment and it looks about right, not enough, and on with the evening get a beer. And it didn't end there. I was informed that they would be withholding $250 per month from my benefits because I have a pension. A rich person can have a million dollars in passive income and collect full benefits. Somehow a working class pension's income is less desirable and therefore not worthy of the contracted amount. Presumably, because they had the audacity to join a union and get a pension. From what I can tell Biden doesn't need to hire this guy. The political elite have already taken the steps necessary to make SSN less popular. The flood gates have already been opened to make SSN means based and therefore less popular. For pensioners only so far. Congress has failed to adequately staff the SSN administration to implement their modest means based bullsh*p and the harassment has began. If they count all the added staff necessary to implement means based SSN than they haven't saved anything have they. The administrative costs are being hidden in the under-staffing and poor customer service received. Means testing is a recipe for disaster. Funding SSN is easy just print a bunch of T-bills and add them to the SSN fund. Boom done. Quote unquote fixing SSN secretly means destroying it and from what I'm seeing they have done a grand job of working on the popularity problem so far. I'll be lucky if I start getting my checks by next year. You don't need to tax the rich. Just print T-bills and put them in the social security trust fund. Don't sell them just print them like we fund endless wars.
We don't have enough to live on and there is not enough decent, low income, senior housing, transportation to doctors, grocery ( how much groceries can a senior carry by herself/himself on a bus or walking?) other stores, recreation, etc... How many of us sit alone day after day, don't have any modern means of communication (internet/phone/TV) live in dilapadative, unsafe, unsanitary, structures, live in a vehicle, are homeless, are abused by family and others, etc... Then the good American Christians protest when affordable housing proposed to be built in "their neighborhood" and money spent to help the lowest income citizens but we can afford "Wars", "Support of Wars" , "subsidies to big oil companies , car manufactures, and taking our manufacturing out of the country" etc... Our Congress "Representatives (LOL) and take millions from the NRA and other big corporations and vote in their favor and not the people. What a great country we have !
