"It" is a 1927 silent romantic comedy film which tells the story of a shop girl who sets her sights on the handsome and wealthy boss of the department store where she works. Because of this film, actress Clara Bow became a major star of the highest magnitude, and as result, became known as the "It girl".

I absolutely adore Clara and her acting! As one article on her said - she makes all the other actors look like wooden dolls compared to her and her absolute skill and raw talent for acting! Her face is incredibly expressive and overall, I think all of us can agree she's got 'IT'!
@thelegendaryblackbeastofaa115

Wow, I can see why Clara Bow became such a hit. Her acting is more lively and natural than a lot of more famous people decades after her, and all this without even saying a word (that the audience hears)! it's also really cool to see the real people of the 1920s actually in motion. Yeah I know this is a movie, not quite reality. But most of them look so much more like average people than the Hollywood actors of today.

I have been reading up on Miss Bow. Seems the had a heart issue that went undiagnosed since she was very young. After her death they found scaring on her heart from a previous heart attack, that no one knew about. And was suffering from a mental illness. To me this shows how tough minded and determined she was. That IT factor everyone talks about, Miss Bow had IT in spades and it clearly shows in this film.

Just like Monroe years later the camera loved Clara. She was still pert and trim in 1927 and in her element here - silent films. She considered microphones distracting and limiting - and certainly her talkies lacked the vitality of this piece. Towards the end of her life she was diagnosed - rather loosely - with schizophrenia although her condition sounds today more like depression and agoraphobia. She was a real cutie exuding humour and warmth in a natural way that no other actress could or can equal.

Did they have music to the films back in the 1920s? I thought that some had live orchestras playing to the movie, but I imagine that would have only been in large cities. In smaller cities and towns did they literally watch the movies in silence with no background music?
@STho205
@STho205 6 лет назад
A big movie had sheet music sent with it. A pianist, combo or small orchestra could play the accompaniment. Toward the end they were shipping records, and several films in 27,28 had such synchro records. When full fledged Vitaphone style audio tracks came force around d 1929/30 the musicians were put out of work, right into the depression. A very small town theater may have played them dead silent, but most old movie houses I see had orchestra pits.

It definitly proves that what actually makes a good successful movie is just two factors; 1 - Great story and 2 - Great acting performance. That's IT!

By modern standards, perhaps Clara Bow's character should have waited until she's a little more mature before she starts messing around with boyfriends who look old enough to be her dad, though she was indeed an adorable girl at the time. Oh, and Monty has the BRIGHTEST and BLUEST eyes I have ever seen, too!

Tsubahi i thought there was something wrong with them but I realized it was the color of his eyes, so blue...

i’m wondering... i notice that in a lot of these films men and women decide to get married within weeks or even days of knowing each other. was that was it was really like back then? the decision was made so easily and quickly? i’m only 17, but i’m a really big fan of clara!

At least they got to fall in love and quickly got married! Now every couple jumps into bed within minutes of meeting each other! Except in the hallmark movies where there's always some misunderstanding and silly complicated storyline. 😆

Getting married in weeks of knowing each other? No, that was just a plot device to move the action along. Until the 1940s, and the Second World War, engagements might last a year or longer.
