.
. On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Brothers flew for the first time in the KillDevil Hills in North Carolina. This event would spark a new era of travel, exploration and discovery and would change the world forever.
I've always wanted to go back to where it all began. So that's exactly what I did.
I met up with my friend Dave at Cape Fear Aviation Flight Training just south of Fayetteville. This is an awesome flight school with a great personal touch and huge success rates for students.
Dave and I would spend a few days flying around North Carolina, with our biggest mission being going to First Flight Airport, KFFA.
The Wright Brothers picked the KillDevil Hills on the outer banks for a reason. The winds were almost constantly blowing, more than anywhere else to their knowledge.
They'd spend years preparing for the big day. They'd test and tweak, tinker and toil. Eventually they found a design and worked well.
They flew for only 12 seconds and only went 120 feet. But subsequent flights would see them go further and further. This first powered flight would be the only to take off under its own power, remain airborne and land, all under control.
While it was Wilbur Wright that made the first official flight, they were both partners in arms.
If you'd like to know more about the Wright Brothers and their amazing journey, I highly recommend reading their book by David McCullough. amzn.to/2Ou5Tmz

Great video man! It was on my bucket list too, and I flew there last summer. To date, it's still one of the more challenging places o have flown into. It can be a bit bumpy, and there is lots of traffic, to include banner towing going on in the area.

12 sec is how long the plane at 5:22 took to reach orbit. Amazing the progress 110 years has seen!

Dave is my flight instructor and I fly out of Grays Creek. My goal since I was around 10 years old when I first went to Kill Devil Hills for vacation with my family was to one day fly into First Flight. Its been a bucket list goal since then and thanks to Dave's skill as a CFI and me pursuing my dream of being a pilot will soon make this goal a reality. Within the year I will be complete and will make the exact same journey you did here in this video. Absolutely loved the video, one of my favorites.

I first started my flight training at Cape Fear Aviation until I transitioned out of the Army, I went around multiple flight schools ranging from South Carolina and even all the way in Guam. But I still found myself coming back to Cape Fear and finally earning my PPL with them, I will miss flying with them again.

Hey Chris. I was watching your videos before my first lesson, now I'm a Private Pilot from NY, and happened to be at Fort Bragg, NC for a few weeks and watched this video for the 3rd of 4th time. You just reminded me that I want to rent a plane and fly out to First Flight before I leave. Thanks again for being so passionate. Your videos (and your podcasts, while you were making them) were my go-to source of aviation inspiration for months. Cheers!

tombuttner So happy to hear that! You ought to go rent one from Cape Fear. They maintain their airplanes well. Keep up the passion!

Such a great video! Can’t wait to make that same flight. Dave is my instructor. Couldn’t have gotten a better instructor. I will be making that flight to KFFA when the weather warms up a bit.

Been watching your series with Josh in Alaska lately and it's so cool to see you came down to my home state of North Carolina to the birthplace of aviation last year. I just went myself for the first time last year in May and walked the same path up to the monument you did. Hope you enjoyed your trip and thanks for the great videos. Hope CFI life in Homer is treating you well.

The first REAL FLIGHT (taking off using its own engine and not being catapulted into the air) belongs to the Brazilian Alberto Santos Dumont at Camp de Bagatelle in Paris in 1906. Therefore, Alberto Santos Dumont is the real father of the Aviation for the entire world (of course excluding trumplanda)

Eduardo Gaviolli Plenty of people claim to be the first, while it’s well documented that the Wrights did it first. These conspiracy theories remind me of the moon landing.

It is well documented that Alberto Santos Dumont was the first one to take off and land using the airplane's engine and not a catapult. Therefore, the honor of the first self-propelled flight belongs to the Brazilian
