Went into guitar center last month for the first time in a couple years. I was clueless about current market prices for new models from the big names. $1400+ for the bottom of the barrel bog standard models from Gibson and Fender and decent quality strat customs starting around 2.5-4k!?! Gibson's definitely demanding higher prices. The high wall really nice stuff covered in $6-8k guitars?!? Like whut??? In this economy? They're smokin crack!!! 😆 If I hadn't seen that with my own eyes I would've thought the deals and prices for your swap was crazy. I'd say you did good. You threw in all those extras and it was a real great condition 70's strat. He got a good quality strat he can make a good sale on in his store to the right person. That Les Paul looks to be an easy $3.5-4k turn around in todays model prices.

Great deal. I may be biased as I am not a huge Strat fan (I hate bolt-on necks, it’s like reaching under a girl’s skirt and finding a coq! They also sound very banjo like to me). On the other hand Gibson have significantly raised their prices… that Les Paul would have cost $2200 new a few years ago, I don’t think you will get $2500 for it, probably $2000 to $2200. You got what $350 in cash? So that puts you at $2350 to $2550 and frankly your Strat was worth more than that given the asking price for the 2 same year and model at the other booths. I also think, at guitar shows, everyone is looking for “a deal”. Personally I would put it for sale on Reverb for $2800, taking home $2625 or more after fees and shipping costs (provided you offered free shipping, I tend to personally). Could you have made out better financially? Yes but it would have 1.) taken longer and 2.) more hassle. By the way, one thing you didn’t say that I think is worth mentioning is dealers with booths will usually act like something is not special or act like it is near worthless WHEN something is nice, it’s a tactic to wear down the seller. They do this when they want it, but they want it super cheap and you’re expected to sell for less because “hey buddy I gotta make profit” that’s not our problem so feck that noise LOL

the cowhide esquire with the plain looking headstock is modeled after leo fender's early prototypes that were made between 1945 and 1949, they had that 3 on each side headstock and the volume/tone knobs with no selector and were called 'snakeheads' since the headstock looked sort-of like the head of a snake.

I'm all about the used market shitting the bed for a few years. I held off from buying anything during the the guitarmageddon that was going on as a result of the Covid lockdowns beyond necessities: like strings, cables, etc. There were a couple guitars, an amp and several preamps and pedals. I have one of the guitars. It's 3 years old, and i got it for 60% of the price new. I was seeing them selling for like $50 off the retail and i just refused to do it, in spite of being able to buy it. The other guitar's price has dropped dramatically too, but I'm putting that off for a couple years. I wanted to pick up an Egnater Rebel 20. I had one years ago and i remember it was awesome for slaving preamps and modelers. You can run it from 20W down to 1W, or switch between 6V6's to EL84s. It wasn't even that bad of a price, considering the absurd prices of everything else, but i held off and ended ponying up $60 more 10 months ago, for the Rebel and a 15W Tweaker 12" combo. I sold cars for several years before i started working on guitars and amps. It doesn't matter if it's guitars and amps, pedals, or a mid-sized crossover SUV; i don't mind paying what something is worth. Sometimes, for various reasons, the price of something will spike. Maybe a component is suddenly unavailable and they no longer build them in that form, or maybe someone sees it on John Mayer's pedalboard and the price goes up. Covid created a widespread, but predictably temporary large increase in demand. People were locked in their homes for a year with nothing but time and enhanced unemployment benefits on their hands. Eventually that would end, followed shortly by a lot of gear suddenly starting to they the used market. -Sunrise, sunset.-7 I do feel for the independent shops getting squeezed.

I would think a Guitologist Reverb store would do really well... My advice, after nearly 50 years buying and selling guitars as an active player in gigging bands is this: Buy what you like to play. Don't speculate financially on guitars that you wouldn't or don't like playing. If you don't like the way Gibson Firebirds play or feel, don't collect one.

It's the same at all trade conventions: comics, cards, toys and videogames. These events are primarily held for Boomers and older Gen X, since they are the ones who have the expendable income to buy and trade expensive, rare or vintage gear. There's more guitarists under age 44 than there is over 44, yet they're not at shows like this. They're, for the most part, struggling to pay rent or mortgage, trying to remain gainfully employed in this economy, and not throwing $2590 away on a 1920s Gibson amp. They're buying Harley Benton, Epiphone and Squier and hoping that one day they can own a home or land. The "greatest guitar generation" made it impossible for them to do otherwise, and they can't wait for the day that generation finally kicks the bucket. A 1970s Hardtail Strat is a $200 instrument, not $3000.

IMO there is about to be a HUGE crash in the 1970-1990 Vintage instrument market . The golden era stuff will stay overpriced but the later is about to drop . Guitar & bass "music" was last popular with Gen X . Boomers were the biggest generation that experienced this era but they are selling their stuff and riding into the sunset . Most are selling and buying new stuff just to play . These Boomers would rather sell their vintage stuff for top dollar and use that money for retirement . The only reason 70's and early 80's stuff have risen in price is because of nostalgia . Most 70's and 80's stuff is "meh" . There are some gems out there but you have to look . And a new Gibson Custom is more than likely feel and sound better than an 1981 model . I've played 70's Les Paul's and compared to my newer Les Paul , my newer Les Paul sound and feel better . Now before someone gives me shit , yes , there are some good ones but tbh , their not great . The market is FLOODED with instruments and the population or folks who are into instruments is getting smaller . You don't see many 20 somethings looking for stuff at these shows .

38:54 😂 That sign is not 70 years old like the guy said. Possibly fun the 70's at the oldest but more like early 80's and it's probably not from England either but you could find out by checking the wall plug.

MAN!! I love the idea of the Old'sCool guy's idea of a variable headroom knob. I'm sure I'm not repeating this idea correctly. But I've never heard anyone with something exactly as he's describing, and I know you can't really hear through a live video with a lot of background noise and using a camera microphone, but the idea intrigues me. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea. They say there's nothing new under the sun, but I suppose with technology that might not be true. Gimmick or possibly a good idea?

Yeah, as in…. I’m not going to share how I’m doing this with anyone. But honestly I can’t really blame him. I suppose that’s the chance you take buying from a little guy/boutique company. If it breaks, can you get it fixed if they’re out of business? Probably. But I certainly couldn’t. Brad probably could because he understands circuits. IDK….

Great video. I think you got a fair trade at the end. I'm not sure what I would have done in your position. Value wise is good, but there is something intangible about having a vintage guitar that I might not be able to get over for trading it for a modern production guitar.

Had a pretty nasty interaction with Ninja Pedals years ago on Reverb. Dude took 10 days to ship a pedal from Texas to Oklahoma. No apologies and made up some excuse about payment processing taking to long....Gave him a bad review, and he blew up my messages with all sorts of weirdly veiled threats. It's like, I just want my $40 behringer pedal that I made the mistake of buying from you dude.

i had a small vox tear drop, phantom and hollowbody collection. electric 6 and 12 strings thats some of the stuff i miss most having lost all me guitars and amps around 25 to 30 of both guitars and amps to drug addiction. most of the stuff it was just gear but there are a few piece i really miss a teardrop is one of them. ive got 13 years clean from hard drugs so maybe ill come across one and have the money to buy it they have gone up in value quite a bit though. violin guitars also i had some mij ones never the real vox though

Not that you got a bad deal, but I think that old guy was slicker than you think. Obvious he wanted to dump that Les Paul. Right in front with Trade as an option. Its probably a harder sell at these kinda shows since most are looking for vintage. Congrats on the new Axe.

For someone like me when I was hunting a swap meet in my teens in 92 and had zeeero funds. Would love to see you do a "find the cheapest deal in the show" on day 2. Whether it's a box project wreck in parts and pieces or a beat to hell late 80's honkin boat of a Hondo bass! LOL Only stipulation is it's all there so if put together it should work. You know the Ghetto Gig special. Cheapest dang deal at the show! Don't have to buy it just find it! LOL Maybe also the best value to dollar "best buy" Guitologist pick guitar. Same deal just give us a what you would hunt if it was for your personal enjoyment and a good value not necessarily welfare level but fair budget buy in today's market. Thanks man for walking the show for us. There's so many nice way over the top for my blood priced guitars out there at these shows today. Lot's of beautiful rare picks for the financially frivolous. Not too many nice in the hand and on the pocket book, a lil ruff on the eyes but soppin with mojo models these days. And is it seriously like not much less then 4 bills is the bargain bin price right now at a show like this???🤨 Left all the 1 bill wonders on the pawn shop wall I guess.😏 I know this is not a low end swap meet by any means but someones gotta have a few cheap beaters out there. Anyways, whatever tomorrow brings I'll be watching. Happy huntin.🤘👽

That's how I've done business for over 45 years. Being self employed for over 32 years, I had 1 check/payment bounce, and that was rectified about a week later. Treat people how you want to be treated, do any work on your clients home as you would do in your own home, and do what you said you were going to do. No shortcuts, bait and switch, or white lies. Do your job, and you will be rewarded in life.

For guitars, there is a bigger problem. People my generation are aging out, selling equipment, and younger buyers are not interested in the guitars we bought because their heroes didn't play them to the same high degree. We are the largest generation, and we kept the industry afloat. It's going to crash. No stopping it.

Gear is so cheap nowadays, this generation of guitarist are just cheap, frugal, whatever you want to call it lol.. I started playing guitar in my mid teens in the late 90s and gear prices were bonkers, but that was the norm even a crummy Squire bullet Strat would set you back 200-300bux and you were still paying 200-400bux for a "well used" Kramer or Ibanez at a pawn shop when minimum wage was 5-7bux and hour, it wasn't uncommon back then to blow your whole paycheck on a "used mid level guitar" or a very nice pedal lol.

Hobbies = Stagflation, Basic Necessities = Rampant Hyperinflation. It's just the way it works. A roof over your head, groceries in your stomach, keeping the electricity, water & sewage utilities paid will always take precedence over a really cool looking preowned guitar. There is a lot of politics involved & at the end of the day, keeping the money you worked hard for over a career is a constant assault when society retires you for age.

@@TheGuitologist It's crazy what is going on locally here. The residential growth & taxes by developers & politicians is going after generations of poor & middle class labor like they were paid 6 figure incomes for decades. Somehow a $ 15/minimum wage is supposed to fund inflated projects. Virtually every infrastructure project remains unfunded to as much as 50% funded as approved. One project was victimized for a fraudulent $ 719K payment to a wire transfer phishing scheme (FlaglerLive article, With $719,000 Almost Certainly Lost to Fraud, School District Turns to Insurance in Hopes for Recovery). I'd love to reward some of these guitar manufacturers for the work invested, it's just not in the budget.
