Great vid bud, please do not sell yourself short. You are doing a great job, and taking us all along on your life of discovery as far as biking is concerned. I have been riding bikes legally on the road for 53 years, and off road for a few years longer. My advice for dirt bikes is stay light. A 250 cc 2 stroke such as a Suzuki RM250 was a flying machine even back in the early seventies. Please try a light dirt bike and make a video about your experience.

FYI: The DR650 only weighs about 360# wet (before you swap in a larger Acerbis tank), which is about 80# less than Jess's Himalayan. I think you might have found "the bike".... as long as you're ok with a 34" - 35" seat height.

You completing that hill climb with the loose stuff was definitely a great boost of needed confidence and a growth of skillset. Well done! Happy for you got to ride some bikes to test out, these events are great for it. I don't think we have something like that over here in The Netherlands. And shout out to the fan and subscriber of both you and Jess's channel for him to let you test his own bike. I think it's a great bike as well and good that you've been eyeballing it on those. I never rode one, but like the DRZ400 they been out there for a long time. And since it's Japanese which equals to reliability especially if maintained well.

Great video! I liked the photos at the end. I had a '96 Honda XR250L and a '96 Honda XR 650L. The 250 was basically stock and the 650 had the Acerbis tank on it. Both were fantastic, nimble bikes (the 650 more "slab" capable than the 250, of course). I made highway pegs for the 650, which really helped eat those highway miles. They're in the same class as the DR. Might check those out, too. Keep up the good work!

The DR650 is an intriguing bike and I know exactly what you mean by throwing around a lighter bike. It comes in a great price point too. You really appreciate that feel on the single track trails and loose sand. I'd like to try some of the big ADV's. I'm not optimistic about my desire to get one though. I'm sure i would be much happier with a middle weight displacement. The market has a lot of choices. I saw they have the Aprillia ADV that a lot of people like but then be concerned about manufacturer/dealer support issues. I'm aiming to buy a retro naked but an ADV is definitely THE second bike on my list. Best wishes with whatever you go with. Thanks to you and Jess for taking us along.

I can't remember if I already told you this. This Suzuki DR650 is the preferred bike by the Panamanian police. I am also a Buckeye but presently and expat living in Panama. The motorcycle can go anywhere from off-road to back alleys to up and down church steps, and all over the place with ease. There are suspension modifications you can get as well as the gas tanks which you already mentioned. A lot of guys when they get the bigger gas tanks get the neutral non-colored tank so that they can see the level of gas by the shadow of the gas sloshing around. By the way the only difference with the police and a solo rider is that they ride two up in cammies with the guy on the back with a lock and loaded Uzi. I think this Suzuki DR650 is your best bet.
@JordanRay
@JordanRay Год назад
I like the clear tank idea!
@michaelmacdermott6340
@michaelmacdermott6340 Год назад
@@JordanRay It's actually semi-clear. It's just a neutral plastic with no coloring so that you can see the shadow of the fuel. But yes it's a good idea. Plus it doesn't absorb solar heat.

The thing that people tend to do when riding in sand and gravel is to fight the bike too much. The bike will tend to wander a bit but it's best to just ride with a light input on the bars, keep your weight centered and allow the bike to move under you.

Still think you need to check out the DRZ400 kitted out proper!! It would be even more manageable and lighter than the 650 off-road!! Since YOU go nowhere at breakneck speed, and want to hone your skills off-road I don't think you would be sacrificing much except even more weight. Plus, the 400 just feels like more of a dirt bike for all things versus the 650 feeling more street but capable off-road....😉 Anyway, y'all stay safe and enjoy yourselves!!! Plenty of GOOD TIMES to be had.....😊
