Finally getting around to listening to this, and to no surprise your observations are astute! Talking about the transition...my family's route - other than the normal homesteading route - is to freeze-dry our own food stores. When everyone is starving gold does nothing for you, but food stores do! More than paid for our freeze dryer in the 4 months we've run it.

Some good points thanks👍 I like the freeze-dry practice because it buys you so much time - time to get more food without having to starve while looking for or growing more. Also it won't go off for 20 years so if you overdo it it doesn't matter.

What about you are in your seventies, live in far north west Qld and I can only grow vegies for about 5 months as it's too hot for the rest of the year. Also I would like to know if I will have electricity in this time of lack? Cheers Nick @ far north west Qld

Yeah, good questions. I've given this stuff a lot of thought and there is no one answer. What will actually happen and when is like playing a guessing game, but I do believe a change is getting close. I think that Australia (as a nation) will be better off than many places because of our isolation and our ability to be self sufficient when we need to be (obviously we are far from it at the moment). As far as food shortages (in areas that is it hard to grow for much of the year) there's always the option of growing too much and preserving it for the rest of the year. Many of the homesteading RU-vid channels in the USA deal with this because of their long winters, so there are a few ideas we could utilise from them. There could be a time without electricity in this country. A question I ask myself is: if there is none are you prepared for that scenario? We could all hope it doesn't happen or we could get a backup system in place. I am looking into this myself as there are many options. Refrigeration is probably our greatest asset to modern living and I'd hate to go without that for more that a day. So how to we keep the fridge going in a prolonged power outage? There's plenty of info out there on that too - LPG powered fridges for example. I hope this generates some ideas Nick, cheers, Wozza.
