My favorite drummer of all time. Not by his current work, but the catalog and history he’s created on records.

Lars is a great drummer! He put the perfect beats to Metalica songs. He deserves more credit.

just saw them in Chicago last night and Lars was ON. They did an extended outro/solo to FADE and he nailed the double kick the whole way

Awesome, now let’s get Dyers Eve with double bass 😅

He's got such a weird technique but it has always worked for him. Drum stool is a bit low and he's heels up with toes at the pedal end. Not much ankle rotation either. Most fast double bass guys are the complete opposite.

That's what happens when you're almost entirely self-taught. You don't learn the 'correct' way to do things; you just figure out the way that works best for you. 👍🏽
@deadstar44
@deadstar44 Месяц назад
He didn't learn how to do it "academically" because back then there was no drum teacher displaying proper heel/toe technique for double bass drums speed, let alone swivel. Double bass drums were sparely used by hard rock and jazz drummers, there wasn't any video tutorials or ways to understand how Ian Paice or Cozy Powell did this. Those two probably didn't have the same technique either. Everyone was kind of doing the double bass drums playing the way it worked and sounded the best for them with their specific kit/set-up. Likewise, Lars had to figure it out like most beginner heavy metal drummers in the early eighties through trial & error until it felt good enough to record. He never bothered learning how to perfect proper and effective technique to be fast and efficient ever since because he never felt like he had to for the music he's playing.

That's why he's not fast!

+ he taps his left foot to keep the beat ! It's very stressful to watch, you never know if he's going to land on the pedal, and he does NOT always. These seamingly ''small'' unnecessary motions and habits causes him to miss often. It could be cured with about a month of serious practice with a teacher, but he doesn't care, he plays for fun and it's a philosophy that I can respect.

@nielsgerrits 21 день назад
If I have to guess it’s a throne thumper. It ensures that low vibrations are felt in the chair so that you are aware of the rhythm regardless of the sound you hear during a live performance.

@@omcorcare you sure you're not the teenager that just heard them? I'm 46 and have been listening to Metallica since justice and Lars has always used double bass sparingly and never in any sort of flashy or over the top ways. This video didn't even showcase any of the moments where he really dug into the double bass. He's always played to the songs really well, but he was never some double bass monster kind of player. That's just not him. If he had been a lot of their stuff probably wouldn't have been as good because that's just not what Metallica is.

Lars is actually a good drummer. When he first drumed for Metallica, no one was playing like him or as fast. He is the one who started thrash drumming. In the early 80s, other drummers getting into thrash would copy his style. As drummers got better and faster and Lars did not change his style, people began to say and think he is not a good drummer. Even today, most thrash drummers idolize him as a great drummer who started it all. Just try and play Lars parts perfectly, and you will find they are not as easy to play as they seem. If Lars was really as bad as most think, he would have been thrown out of Metallica years ago. He is still considered one of the best thrash drummers
