Fun fact, tanuki are not actually related to raccoons at all. They’re part of the canidae family like wolves, jackals, foxes, and dogs. While they do have some resemblance to American raccoons in terms of markings and colors, they’re dogs because they don’t have opposable thumbs or “hands” but rather normal canine paws. That’s why they’re called “raccoon DOGS” as the translation of the word “tanuki” instead of just “raccoon” by itself. I don’t live in Japan but I did plenty of research on the mythology and culture and creatures of Japan to know of that much.

I in fact do have a family of kestrials that made a nest on my AC. now my Mom is informed by our local animal expert not to turn on our AC until the babes leave the nest as the disturbance could freeze the poor things to death. My cats watch them with curiosity safely behind the window.
