Ah, my Dad. No internet, no cell phone, no computer, but thirty thousand records! I haven’t been doing him justice here in Toronto for the last 40 years. I’ve been proudly telling people he has a collection of 10,000 vinyl records. And yes he has owned and spun them on some of the finest equipment available. Adcom amps, Ohm speakers, Shure cartridges. The equipment came and went but the records stayed. He’s still a bit nostalgic for the old hardware though. Back in 1974 when I was 15 I hooked up the family TV to some speakers I had made myself using RadioShack drivers and used a quasi surround system. I used the Hafler circuit to send signals to the rear speakers. This circuit uses the difference signal from the front stereo pair to create the ambience. Quad was just to expensive and problematic and required special equipment to extract the four channels. Now 60, I still have a love for the equipment and have several systems in my home including a full blown theatre room I constructed myself with...yep, homemade speakers,1000 watt JBL woofers driven by a 3000 watt amp with two level seating, seven channel surround and more subs under the floor. The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree! Dave Doolittle...junior.

I think you’re mistaking me for my younger brother Ken. He lives in Montreal and plays in a big orchestral band

It seems your Dad taught his sons well. I'm raising my newborn daughter on a steady diet of vinyl played on a Thorens 125 M2 through Quad ESL57 speakers. I hope she turns out as cool as you and your bro.

I can’t imagine wanting to own a record that I have no interest in playing, that shit always blows my mind.

He did play the GWAR. It just doesn't fit his taste - at the moment. IMHO-Your taste in music changes over time. I have about 4000 Lps - couldn't possibly play them all in a year or two. But whenever i choose, i can - and no fees to anyone else to do so. It's a general love of music, not just your favorites. You appreciate the musicianship and creativity of all of them. Then play some of them as the muse hits you. Sometimes you grab something you have that you have half forgotten and get reacquainted when you play it again. Good times. I bought most of them cheap - i maybe have $10,000-12,00 in all of them. Bought many more that i traded or sold. The profit from the sales repaid all the 10-12K, so i have a very nice collection with essentially nothing invested any more. So it is all for the musical enjoyment.

Lionel Hampton on Columbia 6 Eye. Very Nice. I have been collecting records for 50 years and own 8000 or so in my collection. Vinyl is a beautiful medium and deserves more respect. It brings such joy to those of us that have discovered and embraced it. I am so happy that there is a vinyl resurgence. Long life, and health and many more years of great listening to you sir. Kudos.

Old guy is legit. Young guy, annoyed at him already for having a Gwar record only because it's valuable.

I'll do that if I know I can trade it for something else... as a collector why would I not? I find stuff like that flea markets and secondhand stores all the time. Doesn't make me an asshole, makes me strategic. Having a knowledge of what's valuable and what's not is a skill.

I’ve met my match. I have been through cocaine, weed, heavy drinking, psychedelics and smoking. I’ve beat them (except weed) all but nothing was as difficult as resisting the urge to buy more records.

The guy with the gwar album is pretty much why buying from certain sub genres is a pain on vinyl these douchebags don't care about the band or music just see the monetary value in it and know desperate fans will pay eventually.

Collectors always have the cheapest gear. Hey lets spend more on a plastic album than the stuff to play it on.
