Monday, July 29, 2024: This evening I retraced my footsteps from last Friday night's stroll (see my video "Lighting Up the Night!" and my short "Where The Night Is Young") to Two Boots Pizza. There, saucy, cheesy slices are served up with passion and have the type of kick that might knock your boots and your socks off, too.
Decorated inside and out with a red-orange-yellow scheme and setting the mood with mellow music and vintage-style décor, including red-hot neon signs, Two Boots Pizza succeeds in stimulating one's appetite -- and other senses -- upon entry onto the premises.
Cushy, curved red vinyl banquettes; dazzling red and yellow art glass orbs suspended from the ceiling; and ample strings of festive LED lights wrapped around long, girthy, orange pipes all lend a theatrically sensual atmosphere.
As delicious as the slices are at Two Boots Pizza, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the amazing tabletops -- like the pizza boxes -- feature idiosyncratic artwork by Gabriele Raacke. For example, my table's surface was adorned with Raacke's spectacular rendering of Cleopatra Jones, the undercover government agent by day/supermodel by night, of the eponymously titled 1973 blaxploitation movie starring Tamara Dobson.
It was a delight to masticate every bite of my slices of sweet Italian sausage & onion while gazing at Cleo's "whatchu say, sucka?" side glance above an opened furry jacket revealing her cinnamon décolletage -- all covered in multicolored glitter.
However, one shouldn't get so absorbed in the red-light-in-the-basement vibe -- and in the Mod pop-culture canvases by New Jersey-born artist Robert Piersanti mounted on the walls -- that one forgets to glance down. The red-and-black diamond pattern tile floors' court jester allusion provides a bit of comic relief, should the mood get too spicy for someone's taste.
Two Boots Pizza is located at 133 Newark Avenue, just a few giant steps from Grove Street. "Mother, may I?"
