Dylan Skie nice to see so much stuff from the later seasons released by fans like yourself. Would you consider ripping some of the music from Selfless (s07e05)? The music at the end is so gorgeous. I think I’m right in saying Robert Duncan didn’t use live strings very often (just synth), but there’s a cello in the final moments of Selfless that melts my heart.

TomStufforShow yes, I can! I’ll look for the final cue of the episode for that cello. And what makes you say you think he mostly used synth strings? I haven’t noticed one way or the other, but I don’t have the best ears for it!

Dylan Skie I could be completely wrong, but I grew up playing violin and I certainly notice the difference between the sound of Buffy’s score and, say, the music from LOST which was recorded by a 52 piece orchestra. For Buffy they just didn’t have the budget for a full orchestra, which is why they relied on solo composers. They struck gold with Beck, who knew how to blend synth strings with live instruments (oboe, cello, flute etc) to create a much richer sound than his predecessor, Walter Murphy (who ironically went on to compose for a full orchestra on Family Guy!). There’s a piece about Beck’s composing on one of the DVDs where he explains his process. I think I also read somewhere that Douglas Romayne, who scored half of season 7 and wanted to score the finale but got pipped to the post by Robert Duncan, made a point of emulating Beck’s style, which is why his pieces feature more live instruments.

@@DylanSkie The part where Buffy and ford are talking after they've trapped Buffy and she gives the 'you don't have a good choice but you have a choice!' speech, and also the very end between her and Giles where Giles says 'what do you want me to say?' and she says 'lie to me.' The violin during those scenes are so incredible! Thank you so much for responding! :)
