It's alive! The CAR WIZARD's dead '12 Nissan Juke is finally running! No junkyard for the Juke! 

Ah yes, the Renault dipstick trick. I worked with a fleet of Renault minibuses with a two-foot long dipstick made entirely of plastic which followed a winding route into the sump. Because we had to check the oil every day, the bottom nine inches or so regularly snapped off and vanished into the sump. Some of those buses must still have four or five broken dipsticks floating about in the sump....

To those of you wondering why we're a replacement society and nobody bothers to fix/rebuild things anymore, this is why right here. Imagine if this was your car and you brought it to the shop. It's your only car, you're making payments on it, and you have to get to work. You wouldn't be very happy to have to wait 6 months to get it repaired, would you? This is why most shops would quote you an engine, whether it "needs" one or not.

I used to own a Nissan 300ZX. I needed a power window switch for the passenger side.Went to the dealer and bought one. Went home and discovered that I was sold a driver's side switch assembly. Went back and swapped it for another one. Went home and found that the replacement was also for the driver's side. Went back to the dealer, who was starting to think I was crazy. This time the dealer ordered one directly from the Nissan central parts warehouse. It was also incorrect. The main parts warehouse then pulled and checked their entire inventory. all were wrong. Someone in japan had packaged the switch for a right hand drive vehicle with the part number for a left hand drive Z. Nissan overnight air freighted the correct part directly to my home. I always wonder how much trouble the poor guy back in Japan got into.

I had a 2014 Nissan Juke Nismo with the 6-speed. I LOVED that car. I had it until last October. A lady failed to yield for her left turn and I T-Boned the passenger's side of her car doing 45mph. Total loss. The following week I bought a 2021 Nissan Kicks SR. It's nice, but it's just not the same.

You probably already know this Car Wizard. There's 2 different 1.6L engines. One is a 3 cylinder and one is a 4 cylinder. Those 4 extra wrong sets of bearings are probably for the 1.6L 3 Cyl.

We had a sign in the engine room of a ship I was on saying that Heaven has German Engineering, French cooking, and British Police, and Hell has French Engineering, British Cooking, and German Police. Having experienced French Engineering I thought that you would find that humorous.

From memory in Australia the Juke was UK built for Australia and for RHD markets we got a 1.2 Turbo manual base and the auto base initially had a Nissan NA 1.6 with the CVT only then upper spec got the 1.6 with a turbo in man/CVT?

It's amazing that a staple could do that and im not surprised that someone would say fake but we all know their are some folks who are unable to learn because they think they know it, ALL they don't.

Late to finding your channel and I love it! I bought two used 2012 jukes (at 40K miles) for each of my kids. We love them. Of course the cvt is changed as I preach every 40k. I miss driving their jukes since they have moved out. These cars are great for all kinds of weather driving. The turbo really makes it extra fun zipping around. The jukes now have over 120k on each of them and my kids still love them. I'm the Nissan "Z" driver in the family. :)

Car Wizard, just to let you know, every renault and nissan made in argentina, mexico and brasil are now using the HR16DE engine for most their B-segment cars, so if you need to, you can buy any spares from Mexico

Speaking of that staple, something similar happened to my dad back in college with his hot-rod 70 camero. Sliver of metal got sucked up and locked the pump. Engine was fine because it happened at startup and not on the highway.

I had one. Wizard, you are right on. I got 155k of trouble free miles from mine.. less the CVT that crapped out at 87k.

You really came through, it's good to get this vehicle back on the road. Such perseverance, and skill. This model has a place, it's an ok daily driver. Kool.

I once bought a '72 Marquis that was dead. Turns out the oil pump had something in it which locked it up. The engine was completely unharmed because the shear pin for the oil pump drive had broken and stopped the distributor's rotor. Replaced the oil pump and shear pin and I had a good running car.

The one nice thing about the Juke is that in the US market, it has the engine of a vehicle a size-class larger. Most subcompact crossovers at the time had 130-140 hp engines while the Juke had 188hp.

Back in the early 1970s a college classmate suffered a similar catastrophic engine failure. Her parents had gifted her a Mustang II at her high school graduation and at just over 2,000 miles (and on an interstate) the engine bit the big one. Needless to say, my classmate had to walk several miles to a pay phone (Yes Karen, there was a day when cell phones were not a thing.) to call her Dad for help. Dad, and a wrecker arrived a couple of hours later, and the Mustang was towed to the originating Ford dealership. Long story short, after a complete engine tear down, an aluminum clip, similar to the one visible in your shirt pocket, was found in the oil pump. How did it get there? Apparently at the factory. Thankfully the Ford dealership in her hometown did not make excuses or expect her parents to come off the hip for even more money and replaced the engine on their dime. My classmate drove that car for almost twenty years before she traded it for a Ford F-250 which she drives to this day.

I have a 2012 Juke and i love it, hasn't given me any problems.

Found out on Nissan CVT Internet Form: that when you place Nissan CVT in drive position, it should not do anything, until throttle up engagement... !! If CVT is placed in drive position and gets a jerk or a clunk, it needs to be serviced... The Car Wizzard has a previous video on complete & comprehensive maintenance of a Nissan CVT... !!

so wise , Thank You . I have a 2002 Nissan Frontier that I have has for several years . Fortunatly I know a Farmer level Mechanic , for example i had him change the trans. oil and filter , he found a part inside that was almost broken , so he welded it back togather . that was about 110.000 miles ago still works . when the rear bumper broke , He built me a new one out of REAL 1/4 inch steel. Also when the ignition fob broke , his son was able to bypass it so now I have a pushbutton start, and NO fob thing

This engine has found its way on many cars in Europe including Mercedes A class, Gla and others. Also, Dacia. Crazy to think that a Mercedes shares engines with a Dacia

Mexico has Renault and Peugeot dealerships.. if you have this issue again you might be able to get some from there, would be closer to you than AU.

A lot of owners switch out the transmission “beehive” cooler from the 08-13 Rogue. This lets you add a better transmission fin cooler that can be mounted in front of the radiator. And I think Nissans drain/fill service schedule is every 60k miles. I do mine 30-40k since these CVTs are notorious. By the way, the manual Nismo/Nismo RS version is the way to go.

"These engines are not really design very well." Maybe for mechanics... This engine is still sold. The 1.8 variant is in the Megane RS with 300hp. And the diesel version(same spaghetti) was even put in Mercedes vehicles. It's one of the most commercially successful engines ever.

Another Aussie here, Wizard. I was going to ring around when I saw the first video as there are many Nissan Jukes still on the road here, and plenty of aftermarket stores that do a great job sourcing oddball bearings. Next time I won’t procrastinate and just call around. 👍

The problem is part of the jukes came with Nissan engines which is probably the bearings that the Nissan dealer has. The rest had Renault engines.

How pathetic the engineering staff at Nissan has become to not even have control over categorization of something as fundamental as a main bearing. It's just sad.

I stopped recommending Nissan years ago, and hated doing it. I loved the company since it was Datsun here! Honda is right behind them. My oldest son and I prefer 2002 back for most of our projects in general. We like a few all through newer years, but we're very careful. Always good info.

It's like Dewalt, "Made in USA with globally sourced parts". Those "parts" are available only in OZ.

Thanks for this. My 2011 is at 113k and never changed the cvt fluid. I’m going to do that ASAP at a diy shop. Hopefully it lasts a long time. So far I only changed the fuel pump and just did maintenance. I can tell it’s slowly changing and realizing it’s louder and need to really step up to make it last longer.

I had 2002 Dodge Ram and could not get a wiper motor. I was told that they don’t make them. Love the Mopar feeling.

My wife has a '13 Murano, we've kept the CVT maintained well. It's a really nice vehicle, regardless of the crappy CVT keeping me on pins and needles. It's easily her favorite car, it's infuriatingly nice.

I would change the cvt fluid every 30k. The fluid looks black after 30k. I work at a nissan dealer now and I've condemned 3 transmission dead this week so far. I also have had some time on the juke. They get really sludge up. They need the oil to be fully synthetic (they were putting in semi synthetic at the start) and be changed every 3000 miles. The turbos do okay with failure at around the 150k area. If you change the oil every 3,000 it will help prolong life. Nissan doesn't really support the motor anymore. There are a lot of tech line cases with replacing the long block. There was a recall early on to replace everything associated with the timing chains.

I had a Chevy Spectrum. When I needed parts I told the parts store they were for an Isuzu I-Mark because that's what it was.

I went through the same thing with my Durango. The transmission pressure sensor I got through amazon was wrong 3 times. I gave up and went to ebay and that was the right one. Took a lot longer than it should have.

I had a 2012 Nissan Juke great little car for the price switch the tires to Continentals DWS.. fantastic little beast in the snow! Got T-boned in a snowstorm, a Subaru and it was still Running!

As far as I know all our Aussie Jukes are assembled in the UK.

It is a strong little engine and a fun car. Only problem going forward will be, as you found out, parts availability, as it shares very few parts with other car/engine in the US.

I’ve bought a 1 litre bottle of oil to top up my engine. It came in a plastic bag which was stapled at the top. I opened the bag and undid the bottle but I didn’t remove it from the bag. Thankfully the staples didn’t fall into the engine but I can see how the could.

I love my juke nismo rs. To the people that bash on the cvt either dont own one or dont keep up with maintenance. Ive had nothing but goodluck on mine just drove it on a 3146 mile trip with no issues.

Car Wizard, that engine sounds beautiful. Alot of people love exhaust racket but to me that hood open , stock smooth engine running sound with no clicking ,rattling ,whistling or belt slipping is magic. Nice job to you and your whole crew.

I had a Nissan Juke junk with cvt, I had no issues even with the cvt. But, at 139000 my catalytic converter failed and they said that it damaged the engine. I still had payments due on the vehicle and warranty was not covering the problem. I miss the fun driving that little car. I would like another one but with a 5 spd

Im holding my breath on my 2011 Juke. I bought it with around 92,000 miles. Its got the 1.6 engine and CVT transmission. I bought it from a used car sales in 2018. The biggest expense was replacing the Alternator so far. The belt clutch went bad on the old one. I try to baby it knowing that launching it hard could cause things to go bad sooner. It has 98,000 miles on it now. So dont know how long it will hang in there but its paid for and gets us around the KC area well. Thanks for the video. Hopefully. We wont have that bearing go out.

Maybe the wrong bearings were for the gasoline 1.6 Juke. I believe the petrol 1.6 version is made by Nissan, but the diesel version was sourced from Renault. Just like with a 2014 Suzuki Vitara I had, was equipped with a 2.4 Gasoline engine and to my knowledge there was a 1.9 DSL(which was also sourced from Renault) version in other countries, but we didn't get the DSL version here in the PH.

Don’t buy a Nissan with a CVT, he buys one, don’t buy a Cadillac with the north star engine, he buys one, don’t mix a Chevy with a Jaguar, he does it, don’t buy a truck with a rotted out frame, he buys one, don’t buy a boat full of bird droppings and broken toilet, he buys one. Don’t buy a VW new beetle, he buys two.

Great mini series. Just saying Renault engines are normally pretty good. They seem to hold up well. These are used in mercedes too. I bet it's really good on fuel as petrol/gas/essence is expensive in France

50,000 mile interval on CVT oil isn't frequent enough. You should do 30,000 miles.

CVT might fail without regular servicing? I'd say it will fail without regular servicing.

I almost bought one of these back in the day before the CVT issues were commonly known. No regrets in avoiding it. I never see these on the road anymore despite the last model year being 2017. Pre CVT I had a Sentra 1.8 I bought at 60k miles and put 120k miles on with nothing more than a fuel pump and a crankshaft sensor. It was still going strong when I sold it. Mom had an 01 Maxima she put 240,000 miles on with it still running great. I hope one day they return to that build quality. Everything we have now is Toyota for obvious reasons

I have a nissan qashqai (rogue there) and yes, it is a renault mechanically (engine, gearbox, diff...)

Think what was happening was they were sourcing you the 1.6 petrol engine bearings

Funny. Bought a Nismo RS juke few months ago. Now replacing OEM origional clutch at 102,000 miles. Typically good till 100k. Though $4k estimate from dealership. Clutch 2,500, flywheel 1,500. Flywheel side surprisingly contains the springs and what not. Cheaper options but no warranty.

This car is product of Renault Nissan Common Module Family (CMF). Basically, renault platform with nissan styling. 1.5dci (diesel engined) ones are nice in EU market. But surely they are not suitable for American market.

Wizard, if you want that turbo to survive, get an after market turbo oil supply tube. Either Mba, of Fast Religion males one that will live the life of the motor and won't suffer from heat shrink and close off and starve off the oil supply to the turbo. Plus, I would add a trans cooler and beehive to it a d for sure do a trans service every 30k. It'll live well passed 200k if you do this and oil changes every 3k miles using only quality oil. Plus on the trans service only use Nissan branded CVT fluid.

I had a friend who worked at a BMW Renault dealer early 70s. He quit solely because the Results were so poorly desk designed for maintenance. He quit in the spot and returned to school and got a master's in physics and ran a tunneling electron microscope for Motorola for a decade and a half.

Hi, I bought a new bolt(w/magnet) for my '08 Acura TL oil pan . I took it out of the package and somehow the staple from the bolt package ended up on the magnet of the bolt which I found a year later. Luckily after a year I found the washer on the next oil change.

Don't fergit there's a whole other transmission filter inside the CVT oil warmer. It's serviceable through the left inner fender. Nobody ever tells anyone about it. It's very similar to an oil filter cartridge.

Had a 2015 on lease. Thanks Wiz did not know the engine was Renault and dealers not stocking. Bought a Corolla for retirement. Glad now. Was thinking of buying Joke. Loved mine

There's starting to be an After market for these cars.. There's 2 different Tuning software's that work really well, ECTek, and UpRev.. Both can turn a stock juke into 250/300 HP beast depending on Bolt ons and Cat back..

Wizard, my cube (and your cube, if you still have one) has the older, slower cousin to this engine, the MR18DE. And I've learned this week that some vital parts are permanently out of stock for that engine. So your story does not surprise me. I discovered a coolant leak on my cube's engine this week, and I believe it's coming from the water outlet at the back of the engine. Probably just the gasket going out. Thankfully the gasket still exists and is still listed at $3 in the Nissan parts catalog online, but if by some chance I find the water outlet is damaged when I get in there to change the gasket, my only option is to source one from a junkyard. It's not bad, sourcing spares from junkyards, but it does make a man think how much longer he might get to enjoy his car.

Wizard, IDK if you saw my comment on the last bus video, but I think the Juke would make a good vehicle to tow behind the bus, it's fairly small and light, and it's FWD (not the AWD model), so easy to put on a tow dolly to pull it. Plus if anything happens to it while it's being towed, it's not a massive loss.

You can get Renault parts shipped from Latin America without much of a hassle.

I had a guy from my high school class that had a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang. He installed the intake manifold package for the inline 4 barrel carburetor. As they installed it they found one manifold bolt missing. They found it on the first roadtest. Stuck in a piston.

Well, Australia is probably closer to Japan than to Kansas. Renault, Mercedes and Nissan collaboration, so I believe. Maybe Kansas is close to Europe? Can't be arsed looking it up. I used to wreck Nissans, and they'll send you broke. Different parts on identical cars. The old "just-in-time" parts supply model. If one maker hasn't got it, get it from another manufacturer. If it bolts on, good enough, but it doesn't mean it contains the same components.

So the Wizard now really has a Juke Joint!

My neighbor had a Juke about the era yours is. Bought it new. I think she kept it for 2 or 3 years and traded it in on a Toyota.

Nissan Juke and Quasquai have two country of origin for engines, one is Renault (French) and the other is Japan. In my country we got both and we see that the French engine is not as reliable as the japanese one. but the the japanese engine is rarer, like 1 out of 100.

My wife test drove a Juke when new and entertained the thought of getting one. I’m so glad we didn’t. Nissan sure didn’t stand behind these and why would they use an engine from Renault?

I've owned Nissan for a long time and never had problems but this car matches the quality of cars build today Nissan isn't the only one producing junk there is a lot of junk out there from all manufacturers and we won't mention EV's

I wonder if they changed the crank/bearings at some point during production and those other bearings would fit an earlier/later build.

My Mercedes B class also has a CVT transmission (it's the only model that had one), and the transmission service at the dealer is made every 60.000 KM (37.500 miles). Maybe even 50K is too much

As a juke owner, please don’t buy one if it’s not a manual. Also try and drive a modded one sometime, criminally underrated

Most of this is Renault. Including the cvt. Keep your contact in Melbourne (Mel Burn) we have plenty of Renault dealers.

oh, so thats the mr16DDT engine, which is also the renault M5Mt engine. DId you try looking for parts using the renault engine code?

These cars are engineered to be disposable. The point being that when it has a serious issue like this you have to scrap it and buy another unless you, like the Wizard, have access to another vehicle and a place you can store the Juke while you wait. At least the Juke is a cheap car to buy new. Many high end marques have a similar strategy. My buddy just had to spend thousands having 2 vacuum lines replaced on his 4 year old BMW. They had to drop the engine to do it and the 2 rubber hoses had to be back ordered from Germany and cost 150 bucks a piece and the job took 3 months to complete.

It's nice to repair rather than scrap.

My bet is a quickie lube guy removed the oil cap and then opened a box of oil on top of the engine and the boxes staple fell inside.
