“Don’t expect happiness” Is actually great advice. There’s a kernel of wisdom in her bitterness. She doesn’t know it but she’s saying “don’t be selfish and entitled like I am”.
I haven’t watched the show in a couple years but toward the end when he tried to commit suicide didn’t he refer to her and Carmela said that fucking woman?
Man that’s not true at all, AJ is actually the only Soprano who still has a shred of feeling or conscience by the final season while Tony and especially Janice are turning more and more into Livia clones with every episode
I think it breaks the cycle of people’s narcissism when it comes to how they view their life. Thinking there has to be so much weight around your life story and there has to be a structure. It’s actually nice to hear that you’re not special so stop putting pressure on yourself over something rarely anybody can control, your own mortality. What makes you think you’re so special?
That is good, she is not wrong. I do not know why people are confused by the character I guess it was written for different times in the 90s. She is not wrong about anything she said.
@@szzk7937 I definitely agree with never expecting happiness and people always letting you down. Life has no inherent meaning but it is better to engage in it to distract yourself than be a miserable hermit like Livia. It's like taking painkillers when you're in pain, the wound doesn't go away but you can bear it.
@@smtandearthboundsuck8400 It's all a big nothing, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the trip until we die. Livia's mentality is akin to a 15 years old teen who just discovered Nietzsche: pathethic, useless and immature.
@@Y_hassthanks doomer. How is that supposed to help anyone in any way? Ever think about offering some positivity instead of your half baked philosophy?
Things can get better and I’m sure you’ve seen that in some way since you posted this comment. But it starts with you. You need to start making positive changes in your life and stop waiting around for something to inspire you. That thing is never going to come. No one is ever going to do it for you. So you need to start taking care of yourself and thinking proactively when it comes to making your life better. As you make small steps it will be easier than you think and pretty soon you won’t recognize yourself at all. But it’s all about your mentality. If you choose to lead a purposeless life, then it truly is a big nothing. But in the end that choice is yours. So make it now and start living a life of purpose.
@@Yungknown But it's true, I wish I could preach something positive but the world doesn't work like that. Did you watch the video? Livia is speaking the dark truth.
@@Y_hass no she’s not. Read my reply to the original comment. It’s a show dude and she is one of the most unlikable characters of all time. Not exactly the fountain of wisdom you’re making her out to be. You choose wether your life has purpose or not.
@@CaptainTrips560 She's a step above the rest tbh. I would compare Livia to other antagonists like Richie, Ralphie, Johnny Sack, Blundetto, Phil Phil and Johnny come close but not enough
Livia Soprano: *says nihlistic shit to sadistically watch a child lose hope* The comments: To Be Fair, You Have To Have a Very High IQ to Understand Livia Soprano
You'll note that right after Livia gives her nihilistic little homily, she digs into a big bowl of ice cream. I don't think she so much cares about about the nothingness of it all as she enjoys making others feel worthless, even her nine-year-old grandson.
Either way it’s not an appropriate thing to say to your grandson lol. And really she’s not. She is correct about her own life but that’s a choice she made. You can choose for your life to mean something and happiness is something you can cultivate by making the right decisions. But if you choose to adopt her mentality, than your life will play out exactly as you expect it to.
@@hazzmati wtf are you talking about? You don’t have to be either of those things to make a choice to have purpose. This comment section is really not passing the vibe check. So many people are so defeated. It’s incredibly ironic the way you complain about the circumstances of your life while simultaneously allowing them to exist and choosing not to make things better for yourself. You don’t need to have a perfect upbringing to have standards for yourself. You realize almost no one has that right? Every person is flawed and every person has hardships. There are many people who have gone through much harder things than you and come out on top. So stop being a pussy. I’m tired of hearing this victim shit from everybody. It makes you weak.
@@Yungknown you have no idea idea how hard other people's lives are nor you have any idea about their mental wellbeing. You have that typical boomer mindset of disregarding the hardships of others and just to ''suck it up and make a change'' as if that's realistic plus it makes you really unlikeable.
@@hazzmati the most unlikable characteristic you can have is to accept defeat and discourage other people. Both of which you are taking part in. I’m 24 years old and I know EXACTLY what people suffer through. I am the victim of childhood abuse. Sexual, physical, and emotional. Mostly from my own parents. I have suffered from mental illness for my entire life as a result of this. But do you see me giving up? No. I refuse to de defined by the negativity of others. Grow up and get over yourself.
AJ clearly went to the wrong person to ask about the meaning of life. I believe it was here that AJ started his descent into a downward spiral of uncertainty and depression, all thanks to his cranky, buzzkill of a grandmother.
I've always been able to relate to what Livia said here, but even more now that my supposedly best friend and brother forever has abandoned me. People will let you down. We live in a jungle, and most people are not to be trusted because they are just out for themselves.
She’s not wrong, honestly. At least, the first few sentences haha if she was a little bit more in touch with positivity she could have found the secret out.
She is a brilliant actor. Underrated in this show. But i think many think of her when they go to therapy, and talk about their own narcissistic mother 😂
It’s one of those things where Livia almost seems to make sense here, but it’s born of deep cynicism from a life dedicated to selfish misery. The tragedy of cynicism is the dismissal of love, possibly the only thing that really matters. Livia had given up entirely on love by this point if she ever had it to begin with
It's true. Happiness is never guaranteed. Temporary pleasures is not happiness, it's a distraction. Happiness is a very specific state of being that most people will never reach.
In the eyes of both the other characters in the Sopranos & many fans of the show, old Liv here was the most hated character. In my eyes…she was the wisest. An inveterate pessimist and “natural born” misanthrope. What could be better?
I see her as a malignant narcissist who traumatised Tony with her spiteful, calculated episodes of borderline personality disorder. He became a sociopathic self-loathing thug thanks to her.
