Yeah and one second she doesn't know who Tony is at the door despite him telling her it was him and the very next second she remembers some arbitrary so and so from the son she struggles to recalls childhood upon him mentioning them.
Im talking about a guy who watches gore, builds bombs for no reason, likes the look of blood and says to me he would def do this stuff if he could get away with it. Now theres parts of it he says to try and scare people and create a fear of him but none the less i believe him
@@TherealfermI understand what u mean, but the characters portrayed are functionally sane people. They literally murder and torture people. And they’re so crazy that they don’t even talk about it.
At 4:30, she's initially very excited to have macaroons, but then she remembers that she can't acknowledge that Tony did something nice for her if she wants to be a perpetual victim, so she rejects it.
She filmed all her scenes on The Sopranos while dying from lung cancer and emphysema until the day she died. She died in Stratford, CT just one town over from where I lived. Her death in The Sopranos was rushed last minute and wasn’t planned too much. RIP Nancy Marchand
My god Nancy Marchand is an acting legend. She brought that character to life so perfectly and her chemistry with James Gandolfini was incredible. Rest in peace to them both they will forever be immortal.
She was also the newspaper publisher on Lou Grant. Flinty, god help you if you were wrong character. She was awesome on the Sopranos. So many clip series about the Sopranos just ignore her. The characters make so much more sense when you it relates to Livia.
Livia was a master manipulator. Absolutely brilliant, but so incredibly difficult to be around. What’s sad, is there’s someone like that in every family.
My favorite is when Tony’s Son tells his Grandma, Tony goes to a psychologist. Tony was suffering from all his troubles. She immediately starts crying, and feels Tony is blaming her for everything, and telling the Psychologist all about her! Not one thought about her son’s condition.Nobody suffers, but her. Her, her, and more her!
This is literally exactly how my own mother behaved towards situations just like that. Fucking scary. This character, this fucking super villain of a wretch, is only a slightly exaggerated version of a real type of person and many of us have had them as a mother lol.
My grandmother was exactly like her. Carbon copy. Behavior, the paranoia, the fake victimization. Amazing actress, one of the best of the show. For some reason, I loved all those aspects of my grandmother. I found it entertaining.
And it sadly leaves a lot of scars. My grandmother was a lot like her, she mentally tortured my mother, her daughter in law. Now my mother has become somewhat similar to her.
she was fantastic in that part. she reminded me of my own alcoholic mother who was just as fucking miserable. but Livia didn't need to drink, she was just naturally miserable
the way she scoffs at things is so iconic. the face and the hand wave. just perfect. always will be my favorite character despite the fact she's the complete opposite of my mom. I know that if my mom ever got the chance to watch the sopranos when she was alive she would've loved Livia. RIP to them both.
Perfect depiction of a narcissist. You try to be reasonable as they just take and take until eventually you snap. And they fucking love it. They’ve infected you with just a little bit of the disease that lurks in wherever the fuck their soul used to be.
@@tylermclaughlin2073 He's not a sociopath, otherwise he wouldn't give a shit about any of the bad things he does. Tony has Intermittent Explosive Disorder
@@noahsamuel9780he meant to say that Livia wasn’t a powerful person because she was a woman in a time where women weren’t allowed to be in power a lot. Tony means Livia could’ve been like a Hilary Clinton or someone like that born after the feminists. shows how much livia controlled many aspects of the mob because her husband Johnny, brother in law Junior, and Tony
The absolute nerve of Livia at 12:28 never ceases to amaze me... - Tries to have her only son whacked for putting her in Green Grove, which is after all ‘More like a hotel by Captain Teebs!’ - Doesn’t want to go home when given the chance because ‘They give you fresh towels every day’ 😂😡😂
Nancy Marchand (Tony's mother Livia Soprano) was born on June 19, 1928, and died one day before her seventy-second birthday on June 18, 2000. James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) died on Marchand's eighty-fifth birthday on June 19, 2013.
One of the most terrifying villains in dramatic TV history. Because it's so real and common. Many of my friends have mothers like this. It's scary how much power they weild over these men. A really cruel mother is the worst thing for a boy. They'll never recover. Not really.
I had a narcissistic grandmother, and an uncaring, narcissistic father. They would tag-team me and my mousy mom. The only time my grandmother would talk to people would be to sharpen her claws. She would call my mom every day about 3 PM and put my mom in such a horrible state of anguish I couldn't stand to be in the same room. Good times.
Mine is no better. Italian and acts clueless and carung if Im struggling, or vicious and insulting when I'm doung better than her. To everyone else, a poor old woman with a mess of a daughter. Even told the family I was a drunk or drug addict. Single handedly turned everyone against me and I still am amazed at how she managed it. A true manipulative narc. I noticed these traits from her mother. My Nana was verbally vicious to me. She was no help either. It's generational. These women pass it down. Luckily my father kept me the hell way from them growing up.
SHE KILLS ME. when she is pretending to cry to get Tony to come back in the house at the end, and then when he falls she starts laughing at him.... she's too much I just die
Livia reminds me EXACTLY of my grand father in all shape and form. how he acted with my dad, how he complained, faking some situations... this show is incredible
My dad was tough. He ran his own crew. A guy like that and my mother wore him down to a little nub. He was a squeaking little gerbil when he died. - Tony Soprano
15:55 - 16:03 That part felt really improvised, yet feels so connected to the show. Seeing the actress actually laughing at James when he fell over the steps by accident and dropped his gun.
David Chase said in an interview that his original impetus in writing The Sopranos was exploring his relationship with his mother. Disturbing character, brilliant acting
At 4:28 you can see her character break for a split second when tony tells her she brought macaroons but then she comes right back on track to being the mean, cruel mother she was. This is even confirmed in a later scene where she asks him to take the macaroons away but leave some "for the lunatics" and then eyes them the entire time while Tony is pouring them onto the tray. Amazing acting.
Liv is so PAINFULLY well written and acted. I keep finding myself forgetting she's a character and getting angry at her. I grew up with a mother and grandmother who were also extremely narcissistic, so the little things liv does resonate so hard. For example, livia makes a big huff about going to an assisted living home to the point where tony has a heart attack, and then when Janice offers to take her home, she says she likes the nursing home. CLASSIC bpd.
"Kill me now. Go into the ham... and get the carving knife" the show's writers knew just how to elevate this show to the level of brilliance it was. "Go into the ham", lmao
2:09-2:11 is such a masterclass of acting and directing! Love how this scene feels so real as they all just stare at Tony in varying states of confusion and/or horror before reacting! Most movies/TV shows have characters instantly react when another one falls down, faints, etc. but this is like real life where it takes a few seconds to process and then move. I also love how Livia continues to try and bring the attention back to her even as Tony is laying on the floor, acting all overdramatic lol! Also, at 9:40 when she complains about Junior not knocking--"I could've been in the nude!"--I think it would have been hilarious if Junior responded, "Yeah, just like in the old days."
RawOne911 yes, at 10:04 predicts his dementia. So was Livia really losing her marbles or was she just playing along? Did she really want tony dead and want him killed? I can never tell. She plays it so well.
@@wq198mnr I meant to put a timestamp. But yeah I would say she was getting a little forgetful as most older people do but used it to her advantage to play people lol. But you're right It is hard to tell. That's my opinion
8:03 😂. Realizing she just got caught up. Has no excuses left so just let’s out a grunt lol. Livia is a brilliant character. How she portrayed herself after the failed hit was next level. She was straight evil
Just an odd factoid that came into my head: John Maynard Keynes the famed British economist died in his mother's arms. And while I'm at it, Baruch Spinoza the famed Dutch philosopher died in the bed in which he was born.
I wish Nancy Marchand didn’t get sick and pass away in real life. Imagine how amazing her performance could have been if she had been around for the duration of the show. Maybe if she was still around, tony would have realized how terrible he was getting to be, especially in season 6
Ryan Akwar oh without a doubt. Extremely talented actress. I’ll even go out on a limb and say she was a bigger scene-stealer than others like tony, Paulie, and ralph. I liked her relationship with AJ too. AJ got his depressing view on the world from Livia. Her words echo in his mind even in season 6. I can only imagine how crazy some scenes could have been in the later seasons. Tony was an absolute degenerate in season 6B. I would have loved to see that tony talk to his mother
God she was brilliant in this role I think it was a perfect send off don’t know what she was like in real life but I bet she was very pleasant in real life
I'd love to know what David Chase had in plan for Livia and the plot in general had Nancy Marchand not died. Would be interesting to see how different the show would be.
I'll bet if she hadn't died in real life, her character would have sent Tony to his grave with a heart attack. She drove his blood pressure sky high and just plain drove everybody else crazy.
How did the actress not died, the storyline for season three was going to be Livia testifying against Tony about the airline tickets. Her death in real life forced them to compromise and they decided to kill off her character as well.
This is my mother. If I had a dime for each time she told me that 'sons take better care of their mother than daughters' (a dig to me of course)... She knew who she was though; in fact she took pride in referring to herSELF as' Livia'. How's that for sick? I went no contact 5 years ago and my life exponentially improved, thank God. My 2 sisters are exactly like Tony's too. I cut those ties as well for my own sanity-they are their mother's daughters-black holes of need, greed, manipulation, denial, delusion, etc. It was emotional and eye opening watching this series because of the family parallels.
when I mentioned Livia to my own Livia-esque mother, she also said "reminds me of your grandmother" when in reality my grandma's only ever been good to me, i feel like now everything she ever said about my grandma can be applied to herself more than anyone, she told me my grandma wanted to infantilize me, send me away to a loony bin, she said she was a greedy heartless monster and all the while that was herself she was talking about, not my grandma.. sometimes I feel like I should've been my grandma's son instead of my mother's son.
It takes a lot of skill to play such a despicable character perfectly, especially with the difficulties the actress was going trough, the character feels so real.
Nah, Livia knew just how to play Janice. I'm pretty certain that there was no money, but Livia convinced Janice there was buried wealth just to screw with her.
@@JohnDoe-xf8ew nah there was money because junior said that she was left with a package that could choke a fucking elephant but either she spent it all or didn't use it at all.
This is why I always felt Janice should have replaced Livia on the show. A sibling rivalry wouldn't be as bad as a mother, but it would have been an interesting dynamic.
@Firstname Lastname In this video, when he's trying to come into her house, he says "Ma, it's me". So, she forgot what her only son sounds like, but remembers the name of a boy he went to school with? Nah, it's all power games. Very sad, but well written.
Reminds me of my mother - all too familiar malignant narcissist ..... Excellent portrayal of an unhealthy mother who insidiously and incestuously manipulates those around her creating chaos and constantly attention seeking 👏
Nancy Marchand, what an incredible actress she was. Truly amazing as Livia Soprano. She was also in a Naked Gun film too showing her range as an actor. RIP.
