It's high summer here friends and the common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) is working magic as usual. We are beyond thrilled! The perfumed scent is enough to lead us to sudden, loud exclamations of joy. If you connect with these videos and creating habitat at home, you might connect with this article as well. www.humansandn...

You can REALLY see the way the natives have displaced (or replaced) the turf grass in this video! Love your videos!

There are some more big areas we did this year and have one left to plant this spring. In a few years, everything should look quite different yet again.

I love your enthusiasm in every video. I feel the same way every time I step outside and walk around my gardens.

OK, you convinced me. Next year I'll add some common milkweed to my Swamp Milkweed and Butterfly Milkweed. I like how thick the leaves look. I've been a little worried that if I get too many caterpillars munching on mine I'll run out and they'll starve. That almost happened last year. So those thick leaves should provide a quicker boost to my milkweed mass rather than planting more of what I already have. Just curious, do you guys have any troubles with either Ligustrum or Multi-Flora Rose invasives there? I've been pulling it out like crazy for years here in Western North Carolina and still have a LONG ways to go.

Oh yes, you need common milkweed! Sometimes we have oodles oodles of caterpillars and never come close to not having enough food. We have swamp milkweed here too and love that plant, but it is not nearly as productive as common. We have non-native bush honeysuckle, autumn olive, multi-flora rose and garlic mustard we manage here. We just take it in steps over years and repeat. I think it's just a cycle that will continue on forever. ;)

When I lived in PA it was everywhere, and it was normal to see it wherever I went like Virginia. I moved to Florida 20 years ago and have never seen one plant, but supposedly it grown in my climate. I really took notice last month when I drove to South Carolina and saw it all over the place. What is the deal with its inability to grow in Florida? I bought the tropical variety, but it is incredibly lame. It grows slowly, has tiny leaves, and is a net determent to the Monarch population because the caterpillars eat all of the leaves. I did discover Giant Milkweed a month ago and this plant reminds me of _real_ milkweed, but I'm still waiting for my first caterpillar.

That's hard! We've noticed milkweed is super strong in some years and not strong in others. I would reach out to someone like Monarch Joint Venture who can put you in contact with Florida monarch groups. We have no experience with growing in Florida, but I know there are many who do. Thank you for your efforts! They are needed. Don't be discouraged either; some years are better than others. We know that for sure. ;) monarchjointventure.org/

You've got Monarch eggs...caught a glimpse of at least one maybe two at the end of your video...I don't know if you've noticed, but with all the rain it almost seems the milkweed is popping up everywhere around here. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Have you noticed a general increase in your area? And the population of Monarchs is on the rise!

There are only a few adults here so far. Hopefully soon we will see lots and lots more!

Common Milkweed, How do I protect them from birds? Do they form into monarchs from that same plant? This is my second year to see monarch caterpillars on the plant!!! So excited!!!
@thecommonmilkweed

Birds usually don't like monarch caterpillars. Wasps, ants, etc. do. It's all about the natural food chain though and we don't take any action other than create as much habitat as possible. That is the best for all. Monarch caterpillars usually leave their host plant and go make their chrysalis elsewhere; hence, it's very important to have lots of habitat (lots of other native plants) and not mow around the milkweed plants.

Really beautiful! And the goldenrod is going to be awesome too. I think of allowing my pasture to grow up. I do leave the spring wild flowers to bloom before the first cutting. The problem here is dog fennel. It overtakes so quickly and the stems become wood then you can't cut it with a mower and have to chop it down...Im going to try again to plant some milkweed seed,,,so far no success getting them to start. I have seen Butterfly Weed grow in this sandy soil. Happy Summer!
@thecommonmilkweed
@thecommonmilkweed 5 лет назад
You are so right...the goldenrod will be fabulous! That is truly one of my most favorite plants! Make sure your milkweed seed is viable (the milkweed bugs who are also awesome eat the hearts out of the seed so you want to collect them before they do that. Also, milkweed seed generally needs stratification so planting in the fall is the easiest or doing it in the fridge. Have fun my friend!!

I finally caught on to the waste of a manicured grass lawn. Now I am starting to KILL MY LAWN. I have a wildflower garden and milkweed popped up in there as well as some other spots. Started doing some research about monarchs and am raising a few to adulthood inside. In nature, only 3%-10% of monarch eggs make it to adulthood. So letting milkweed grow is the biggest help we can do. Plus like you said it smell amazing. Currently we have two 4th instar caterpillars, one 1st instar caterpillar, and 5 new eggs all inside. All to be released as soon as they can fly.

Way to go! As we traveled across a portion of this country, the difference in land use was so obvious in the insect/bird/mammal/reptile abundance. It really refueled our fire!

What variety of goldenrod is coming up on this stretch of land?

Out in this field is mostly Canada, Tall and Lance-leaved. I will try to remember to do a post on these later this summer.

How far does common milkweed spread? Does it go on indefinitely or does a colony reach a limit?
@thecommonmilkweed
@thecommonmilkweed Год назад
It definitely does not go on indefinitely. We find it fades out fast. Our original big patches are no more and we have small patches elsewhere. We wish it didn't fade out!

@@thecommonmilkweed Is there something in your climate that keeps common milkweed from spreading unchecked?
@thecommonmilkweed
@thecommonmilkweed Год назад
We wish we knew. It seems real abundant here and everywhere we see it, then it fades out. Maybe it is just nomadic. ;)

@@thecommonmilkweed Is the Monarch butterfly abundant in your area since common milkweed is plentiful?

Some years yes, some years no. They have some real struggles going on. We've seen one so far here this season and the milkweed we have is ready for them.
