Removing the bad door switch and installing a new switch on a 2006 Ford Explorer.
Friend says sometimes the driver door ajar light stays on and dome light stays on also, when either driving or car is locked.
After installing the new switch, the door ajar light and dome light does not come on.

This guy is my hero! Like watching a Schwarzenegger movie, there’s words - not many - but profound and interesting. I like how he shows where the releases are after undoing things. The use of the mirror to see the backside clip is same as I do. The fight with the door lock rod. Most of the time I find out on RU-vid what not to do fixing something new - not here. Spectacular video! No unnecessary talking and you simply showed how to take everything apart as well as discovering what the actual problem was inside the switch. Perfect. Just a note for anybody else who wants to try something easy before tearing the door panel apart - I soaked the lock latch and through the small openings in the latch with the red hose on a WD-40 can and then used the side of a phillips screwdriver to simulate opening and closing the latch a bunch of times. This solved the "Door Ajar" dash indicator and "dome/cargo lights always ON" problem (which arose again yesterday on my '02 F-350 Crew Cab) in 5 minutes without any door disassembly. It might not always work, but it did this time and saved a bunch of trouble. If that hadn't worked, I'd have followed the steps in this video to install a new switch...one door at a time. Thankfully, I knew that the problem was in one of the front doors as I had not opened the rears yesterday when it occurred. Good job and thank you, Angel!

You did not have to take the door panel off cut wires I use a can of electrical cleaner spray it in the door latch fixed it in 5 minutes

As a Ford/Dodge mechanic (yeah the two perfect words for job security!) this is pretty much exactly how we go at it. Even took the time to use panel rivet tool and the needle nose. This is a great instructional video!

First of all thanks a bunch! Add your video and a short one from 1A auto concerning my F-Series door panel and I was done in minutes with out breaking one thing! I will say not sure if any else noticed but you get major points for completing the task not only with one hand but also in a very nice suit to boot. Reminds me of my dad. Anyway, hands were the only thing needing washed but I would not try it in a suit...LOL!!! And the truck is back in action! Thanks again! Mark

If you don't have a new sensor to install yet, you can "short" the two wires together going to the sensor and the "door ajar" lamp will go out. The car thinks the door is always closed when you "short" them together. Just make sure you have the sensor wires and not the two lock actuator wires. The sensor wires are the two smaller gauge wires of the 4 wires in the "bundle" feeding the latch assembly. The lock actuator wires are bigger. Also, the door ajar sensor wires disappear behind the latch assembly, the lock actuator wires are right in front of you when you look in the lower latch area. Great vid!!!

You sure are correct, I had the same issue with my 2016 Chrysler 300c and I let the guys at the dealership fix it. It took them 2 hours and they know what they are doing. It would have taken 3 times the time.

I am IMPRESSED! Great Job. I especially like that you cut open the bad switch and showed us the real problem - internal rust. That is a REAL troubleshooter. My 2004 Lincoln Town Car cannot make up it's mind whether its the driver's or passenger's door switch. Code B1566 "Door Ajar, shorted to ground". Hopefully it's not the BCM (Body Control Module). I've watched over 10 of these videos about the door ajar switch and yours without a narrative seems to be the best. I was told to use electronic spray on my switches for both doors and when I did, it broke both of them. Now I have no door ajar switches and no alarms going off, but I look at it as a $12 fix. I'm okay with not having the dome light come on every single time the door opens; I have the option at the dash in light control. Sometimes the light coming on at night is a terrible nuisance to tired eyes.

You practically had to dismantle the whole flippin' door just to get to that one screwy switch. I have the same dang problem on my '03 Explorer. If I have to go through this much trouble, I would rather set the car on fire. I just went ahead and removed the bulbs out of the dome light. That's my fix. You have much more patience than I. Job well done!

Thank you so much for this video!!! I had this same problem. I would unhook my battery cables when I parked so not to run down the battery! Finally took it to my local Lincoln-mercury dealer! They charged over $200 bucks!! While I didn't like the price, I was glad it was fixed. I don't know anything about cars, but it was really cool and educational to watch you takedown and repair. Thanks again! Wish I had seen this sooner!! LOL!

BEFORE you do all of this try this first. I had this problem on my 2005 Ford F150. Open the the front and back door and locate the switch near the bottom of the door, now spray ti with WD40 and push it in and out about eight times. Repeat on the other side. This fixed mine instantly and haven't had any trouble sense.

Fix It Angel Yea i always like to investigate. When something malfunctions on a car I always remember myself to ask myself WHY? Why did this fail or why did this happen. That way I know the root cause of the problem and not the symptom. Have a good holiday!

I have a f250. The dome light and cargo light go on and off. and key chime stays on when door is open and key not in. Do you think this will fix it? door ajar not on.

Nice Video! But Bill Travis (post below)just saved me a lot of time (AND MONEY)by using his method. Spray WD-40 in the lock latch!! My 2001 Ford Windstar computer said drivers door ajar & interior lights would stay on,I Did this over 1-week ago and still "NO" problems. Thanks Bill.....

Doing this on my 2003 Expedition right now. Just waiting for the part from O'Reilly. I fucked with that plastic clip on the locking rod for quite awhile too. I finally was able to get it out by taking a large flat head screwdriver and placing it flat between the tabs then twisting it to the left that held them open and I quickly pushed the bar to the left as I pulled back on the screwdriver. The one with the locking clip I got out with a small par of vise grips. I thought about using a pick screwdriver but the vise grips was super easy. I put top of pliers on the green tab (yellow in this video) and the bottom on the hinge for leverage, then I twisted the vise grips to the right width, locked them in place, and then pulled back and it opened right up.

I took a chance by getting a shit switch from a pull apart place, but it might be just as shitty as our old one cause it didnt work..Ill get a new one LOL

Excellente .! Code B1175-01, B1176-01, B11C1-01, B11C0-01, B1305-01. All at the same time. moved fuse 18 not inside. the light went out. But it continues to mark openings. for me it is the module. what do you say. the 5 chews open.

If you have this problem and dont want to drain your battery, use the force-off option for the interior lights by rolling down the button left of your steering wheel till it clicks. Then interior lights will be forced off and never come on regardless of door open or closed.

Can this switch also be the cause of my (2013 F250) alarm randomly activating. It seems to like 10:00 pm to 5:00 am; sometimes multiple times per night. Afraid neighbors are going to vote me off the block if I don't get it fixed soon. In addition to the random alarm, I have a passenger door ajar message on dash and dome lights and cargo lights staying on for 10 mins or more.

Hello. I have the issue in my car (Explorer 2008), but the difference is that mine doesn't show any Fault message on the display. The car turns on the Dome Light and also the lights on the side mirrors. Once the car starts they still stay on. What do you think that may cause the problem?

My interior lights don't work at all, the fuse ain't blown and I got no voltage on any of the wires at the light, could this switch be stuck in off position, its an 08 transit.. Good video bro

Had a 2000 and 2003 Ford focus and they all had that issue...now I own a 2014 Ford edge wife loves the car..telling Ford I'm done with them for good no reason to have this problem still on going been decades now..going with Toyota as I have two and run better than Ford's

I hate my ford. The 5.4 is junk. Already replaced one engine, the new engine replaced the cam phasers, vct, trans, plugs were a nightmare , had to use a special tool to get them out, coil packs always going bad. Just junk. Paint failure, wiring problems. Really thinking about switching to Toyota
