It's been a CRAZY few days! Adjusting to life with my shelter dog, Pollux, is always full of surprises. Pollux got a belly ache on Maxxie's 9th Birthday...and things went downhill from there. I can barely even tell you the story because I'm laughing so hard! If you're new to my channel, Welcome! We adopted Pollux on Christmas from our local animal shelter. He had spent his entire life in the shelter so coming to our home is a completely new world for him. And it's new to us too! I'm documenting his transition from a shelter dog to a loving member of our family.

Let me apologize in advance for laughing so hard in the video! I got my giggle box turned over and well....LOL My question to you is: Do you watch your dogs while you are away from home? I've had this camera for several weeks now and it's FANTASTIC! It even has a microphone so I can talk to the dogs! Am I being a "helicopter dog mom"????

WELCOME TO MY CURLS Pollux is a lovely lurcher. They are very strange dogs. They don’t like you watching them poo, pee, or eat. We had one who would take things off the counter top when you weren’t looking. He hated being rained on. Chased squirrels. Great dog.

I got a Ring camera just to spy on my 3 babies. 2 Scnoodles and 1 big girl that's orange and she is a little taller and longer than Pollux. I love Maxi too. I adore Schnauzers and Schnoodles. Lol

I've had those little wifi cameras for 5yrs now, they're great. Got one in my front window and back to warn off theives & 3 inside my home to spy on my fur children lol. I have 3 cats and a little dog. I dont use the microphone anymore because it seemed to upset them more then console. I love having the piece of mind when I'm out or spending the night at my parents knowing I can keep an eye on them.

b b 😂 GSDs and Cocker Spaniels wouldn’t exist as breeds if breeders didn’t sell anxious dogs. But you’re right, breeders just throw them into shelters so people can adopt their “mistake” animals, if they don’t just euthanize them outright. Stop with this breeder propaganda, pure bred means inbred. You get far more health problems in those dogs than you do mutts.

I think there were so many puppies just like him that pushed their way forward and got their homes first. I think she said he was in one of 3 litters of many puppies of the same breed. And him being a bit shy and skiddish, he was over-looked time and time again. But he sure is a jewel, there is no doubt about that, even though he is very sensitive.

Pollux is such a handsome pupper, and Maxxie is also, and obviously full of sass and vinegar - thank you for your generosity of spirit. Also, may I add that you have such a lovely, comfortable home. One other thing - your hair is beyond gorgeous! So, not only a generous and loving family, but also a beautiful and attractive family :)

Our dog was used for breeding, lived in a cage. Not house broken ,never had a toy. He does the same thing. He plays with each one, lays among them and looks them over to make sure they all were played with. Then he has a favorite he carries with him even when he goes outside. He sleeps with it as well. But as his toys go he appreciates each and every one of them. So cute. The first time he discovered how to play with a toy was so funny I cried. He also never used any stairs, had to learn. But he is the best dog , so glad he is mine.

That’s what I thought too. If they swallow remnants of toys it can wrap around their intestines and cause major problems!! Socks and pantry hose especially. Hope that wasn’t the case. Sweet boy!

@ruthvansandt9713

I think it depends on the dog. My hound eats EVERYTHING. She digests cow hooves but hardly ever actually swallows toy parts. My vet says as long as they are still pooping, pretty good sign there are no blockages. The only thing I’ve seen come out the other end was foil when they got into candy one day... hydrogen peroxide if it’s something actually bad and recent enough! Saved us in the chocolate episode, although my other dog had chocolate poops... toxicity depends on the dog, too. Consider corn in the food, though. I had the same up all night tummy ache issues with the hound, after three months finally figured out it is corn intolerance.

This poor animal is the equivalent of a child who was raised in an orphanage. He has no understanding of a family or even how to act like a dog. I know it's a challenge and sometimes makes you feel like you are losing your mind. Please please have patience. I know how frustrating it can be. If I had a dollar for every time I cleaned cat vomit, I would be a millionaire. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking care of this animal. Bless you and your family. You are not only beautiful on the outside. You are beautiful on the inside too.

I love your video about Pollux. I, too, adopted a rescue dog several years ago. He is a Yorkie, and at the age of three he had never been socialized. He didn't know anything, including his name--Marley. I had to teach him everything. The housebreaking was the worst. It took almost two years to get him house trained. He hated children. However, he is now the best pet. It took a lot of patience and love. Hang in there. Things will get better day by day.

I rescued an 8 month old pup from TN about a year and a half ago. He also was not house trained, not trusting people nor used to living in a house. It took him til he was over a year to learn how to lift his leg to pee. LOL, he still looses his balance a times when he is lifting his leg! I call him my “work in progress” he is coming right along ! He’s a wonderful dog.

My pet was terrified of storms. Inconsolable. Extremely anxious. Couldn’t hold, etc. finally found what made her feel safe. Put her in crate. Covered with sheet or whatever to block out all light so couldn’t see lightening flashes. Placed small fan blowing in crate. In my a/c bedroom. Put music on loud to block out thunder and noise. Help her stop shaking. Also she loved wearing tight tee shirt. Worked like thunder shirt but not too warm for her. Wanted to take shirt off after storm and she stuck her head in shirt and tried to put it on. From then on she almost always wore a snug tee shirt. Made her feel safe.

I had a dog VERY much like Pollux. Traumatized (a life of neglect, violence and starvation), low self esteem, afraid of everything at first, shy, never smiled, hypervigilant, and wouldn't be touched at 1st. But the WORST was the fireworks and thunder. Even a heavy rain freaked her out. Someone recommended the Thundercoat, so we tried it. It worked GREAT!! It's the same principal as weighted blankets for children with autism. The right amount of pressure gives them a feeling of calm and security. My dog died of old age last Sept. and we gave her an AMAZING life! She was so happy and playful after the 1st year or so.

You may not read this and the video is not recent but I thought I might share with you my story with Nick, my rescue. He suffered from severe IBS (mostly caused by anxiety) and after trying ALL sorts of dog food, I had to resort to an animal nutritionist. It turned out that all he needed to stop with the bloody diarrhea and the aches was a controlled diet. Glutamine added to the food also helped a lot. Good luck with Pollux and bravo for being such a loving and dedicated adopter !!! ❤️

Awweee, you are a saint! Hope you are getting more rest now that things have started to settled. When my dogs get a tummy ache, my vet told me that I can give them a small dose of kid's Pepto in liquid form (use the kid's syringes for meds, to make thing easier), so I always have some at home. As far as helping them deal with a lightning storm and/or fireworks, my Daisy does wonderful every time she wears her Thundershirt Classic Dog Anxiety Jacket (Amazon sells them). It makes her feel more secure and it is able to sleep much better. I am just happy to hear Pollux is learning so much from his brother. Keep us posted on Life with Pollux!

We adopted my dog almost 5 years ago. I never had before a dog from shelter, & my husband never had a dog before. The shelter we went to gave us an hour class with a trainer, about what to expect from a dog's from shelter, do and don't. Anyway my dog was a very nervous dog, we give him space & time to adapt to his surroundings. However he did well with the leash and harness. He took a wild to not bark to other dogs when he was out walking. We trained him to fetched, and that calmed him down. My dog is mixed between a Jack Russell and Corgi. So he is high energy, dogs like Jack Rusell , Collie, German Shepherd and working dogs usually the level of energy is high. Because by designed they dogs with a job to do. So when they don't have things to do, they get bored, and they tend to chew, get anxious, bark or even get aggressive. Training them especially after walks, help them calm their brains. If you can buy one of those agility courses for the house, or frisbee, that would help his brain calm down, also get him to relax. Shelter dogs learn often from another dog, so by watching Max, Pollux eventually will learn from him. My dog is also afraid of Thunderstorms and Fireworks, we made a shelter under our bed, were he can feel safe. We also put music or the tv a little louder than usual so he won't be able to hear the thunder or the fireworks. He also sleep with me, when fireworks are on or thunderstorms. He feels safe. Anyway thank you for not giving on of him. Shelter dogs need patient and love, they can be the nicest dogs you can ever have, but patience is essential for that to happen. Nice job you are doing.

Carolyn Brewer My dog was always very anxious several hours before we had a thunderstorm and our vet suggested giving her a Benedryl . That helped hrer some but what actually helped her was me just getting on the floor with her and and reassuring her we were there together. She had been a stray or abandoned dog which just found us and adopted us. We loved her immediately and were blessed with her devotion for nearly 18 years. I miss her so much but we plan on a glorious reunion at the Rainbow Bridge and since I’m 82 years old, I am looking forward to joining my family of humans and my 13 dogs and cats. Thunder is a powerful force which is impossible to predict and I sympathize with all the homeless animals which have no one to comfort them. I am so thankful for all you wonderful people who opened their hearts and homes and have in turn received so much love from your fur babies. You are ‘entertaining angels unaware’ and you shall be richly rewarded. .

She also reccomend the thunder shirt, but she had a winter coat that she loved so I used it. It helped some. She had allergies and we put her on lamb and rice and she stayed on it for the rest of her life. I lost her in January of this year. She would have been 20 year old this past May. Pollux probably swallowed something from that donut. Your dog is so smart the donut is like a puzzle to him. He has to figure it out. Also-look for a big ball of string. A good one will take him a while to figure out. . Probably needed stomach to be physically regurgitated at vets They do it all the time and know exactly how to do it. However be careful with food too! If they stop eating food they know. Change it. Again raw hides with the knots at the end helps a great deal

that's a look of adoration from Pollux. Maxxie gave Pollux a B'day present for Maxxie's B'day. He has taught him how to pee!!!! Yay.

I've been watching all of your Pollux videos, and I just have to say, You are the BEST dog mom, ever! I don't think a lot of people would have the patience that you have. I was so happy to hear NO MORE PEE PEE LEG! Pollux is very blessed that you chose him. He needed someone who would love him unconditionally.

Oh I forgot to tell you put a table spoon of naturel bio yogurt in his food and with fresh parsley. Great stops farting and less smelly. offer him some first. its a miracle for their guts. Especially if they've had a bad tummy.

This is yet another viewer suggesting you get Pollux a Thundershirt. We used to take care of a friend's dog from time to time, and she would absolutely freak out during a storm. The Thundershirt cured her. There's something about the tension of the garment around their bodies that is reassuring.

My border collie did the same thing with her toys when i used a toybox! spread everything around the carpet then lie next to it like a dragon with her hoard. Now I put most of the toys in the cupboard and only let her have a couple at a time. It stops her getting bored with them too! P.S. next time you need to catch a dog, don't run towards them. calling their name and running AWAY usually works better. or approach them in a kind of circular route.

Slow and steady wins the race. Our dog used to squat too. Now he lifts his leg. We’ve had him since 8 weeks old. Maybe he learned from other dogs. Pollux is a sweet dog.

You have to be careful with toys they can devour them and get sick. That’s what happens to my daughters shelter adoption dog, Tyson. We love him You look beautiful and not tired at all. Your skin is so nice. I’m an esthetician so I notice those things. Pollux is beautiful and so is Maxxie

Next time sweet Pauley boy has a tummy ache, give him some plain old peptobismol. That’s what our vet recommended for our doggies when they’re tummies got upset and it works every time to this day! Hope it will help precious Pauley boy too! He’s so precious!

So sorry to hear about the troubles with Pollux, but I feel your pain. Our rescue dog, Milo, has been having similar issues whenever he eats people food (scraps). He is also terrified of thunder storms or of being left alone too long. We've had him for about 4 years, and it is getting better. Hope you can get some sleep tonight. Pollux is looking really good!

Thanks Debbie! He is much better now. I think he decided he better get used to the good food...and he's eating it without any issues now. And the tummy troubles have resided...thank goodness! I don't think I would have made it another night. And....he is now telling me when he needs to go out...which is GREAT! He goes to the back door and barks at me. LOL.

These two are a hoot. At this very moment, they are rolling around together in my living room floor right beside me. Pollux loves to play after he has eaten breakfast. Maxxie prefers a big nap but generally gives in to Pollux for a few minutes. LOL. I filmed a new video about them yesterday :)

You are doing a great job helping Pollux feel safe! I’m sorry he’s experiencing “storm anxiety”. I have some tips, if you are interested. Give him a “sanctuary” for that time...bathrooms with no windows are great, but if it does have a window it should be covered. Put a favorite bed in there...some dogs love lying in the bathtub. Keep a soft light on to reduce the impact of lightening. Put on calming music. There are lots of calming music you tube videos. And give him his favorite toys and chews. But be careful, don’t put him in there before the storm starts. Wait for the storm or a reaction to the storm... you want the scary storm to “predict” the opportunity to go into sanctuary. You do not want the sanctuary to predict the coming of a storm. Also, if you know start diffusing lavender or camomile on a regular basis you can do that during the hours before a storm to help with relaxation. You can also brew camomile tea and wet his food with cooled tea to help with anxiety. Good luck and keep up the good work!

I gives me so much joy and solace to see you raising him in a loving home with him being a traumatized shelter dog. Having a mom like you is not something I had and I am so glad that I can at least watch you give that to Pollux, Maxi, and your girls. You are giving them all the room they need to grow up. And it shows! I can tell Maxxie knows who he is and enjoys being a dog.

Lol! Gurl, I understand all of this! I adopted my dog Red who was 6 or 7 years old when I got him from a shelter. He had been a stray and was probably a dog that was left staked in a backyard with no human contact for years. It was a really rough first year getting him acclimated to the family and house trained and not chewing and destroying everything. But that second year...he was a different dog, and by his third year, he was an amazing dog and I loved him dearly. We lost him at 3 years and 7 months because he had developed an aggressive form of bone cancer, but I wouldn’t trade one single moment of my time with my abused shelter dog for anything in the world. I know it’s tough now, but I promise you...in time, you will forget it all and only know that your shelter dog was the best thing to happen to you. Good luck and bless you for doing this.

Food is such a hard subject with any doggo, but sounds like you are figuring it out and trying things for Pollux. Happy birthday max! 9 years old, 🙌 woohoo! With the video I think it’s great, but I get so distracted so I had to delete the app on my phone. But my Charlie chewed on the wall, the furniture and the coffee table while he was still little. Lol he still tries to chew things but he’s much better now. You are looking awesome and beautiful by the way. So happy to watch the updates.

Love the dogs and your ice cream shop in Paducah reminds me of my home-town Cheyenne Wy and your girls in college nearby. To this day though I still remember Nicole Hadley a 14-year-old who sadly passed after a school shooting on 12/1/97 in Paducah. I'm sure there are memorials for her in Paducah. God bless you!

We had to get a thunder coat for our border collie. It wraps around him and helps him feel safe during thunderstorms. Otherwise he would pant and pace the floor whenever it storms. But we got Bear from a farmer and we figured it was from being in the barn with the other dogs during storms. Ours is a smooth coat black and white border collie. They are such amazing dogs. Wicked smart, but sensitive.
