As far as many fans go, Mary Tamm is very much remembered as fondly as Liz Sladen. Tamm decided to leave after the Key To Time series(which is a classic fan favorite and hardly silly, in my opinion) because she thought she had done as much as she could with Romana and didn't want her to end up as another "damsel in distress" as Sarah Jane Smith did. Liz Sladen left for very much the same reason. But both Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward made Romana one of the greatest companions, alongside Sarah.
Romana was the only companion on the same wavelength as the Doctor. Much trumpeting around Zoe and Nyssa, but she was the true equal, if there could ever be one. I did like Mary's portrayal more than Lalla's. Much more assured and Time Lord like.
I agree on both counts. Mary's Romana was much more regal and Time Lord like. Loved her. And a complete contrast to Leela before her. I never did understand how the dickens Nyssa managed to pilot the Tardis, but she was a pretty little thing.
Don't know if you like Tom Baker or his portrayal of the Doctor either. If you do then I saw a very sweet and touching video from Tom on his Facebook site wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. His very cute Dog, Poppy, makes a cameo. It might be nice to encourage Tom with a message back wishing him and his family well. He also announced a neat project he will be working on for the fans. God bless.
She was confident, clever, witty, knew what she was doing and was drop dead beautiful - the first companion to be an equal to the Doctor. RIP Mary Tamm.
And Tom was fabulous and brilliant as the Doctor. I love Mary but doasn't anybody else love Tom on here? The man truly loved the character of the Doctor and gave his all to the role. Tom and Mary are both featured in this video but not one nice word is being said about Tom.
Ahh, Doctor/Romana... yes, it's beginning to get to me too. Pfft, Rose ain't got nothin' on her, my secret hope is that somehow Romana will return in the new series. Somehow. *slow nod* Great video!
Great video- I always thought Mary Tamm was the better Romana- Not only beautiful and aristocratic, but I bought her as a Time Lord, someone one an equal intellectual footing with the Doctor.
@danaseilhan I do beleive what I'm about to say is cannon as it was an official BBC annimation. In the revised Shada, Romana was not only back from E Space, she was President of Galifrey. The whispered word only to be mentioned in a certain circumstance is not his nickname as it has been mentioned casually by the Doctor and, if I remember my classic Who correctly, a friend of his has mentioned it too. So, not such a forbidden name if even his friends can say it out loud.
This is amazingly wonderful. I keep watching it and I still love it, months after the first time I saw it. It's just so well done. We need more Four/Romana I. I doubt many could beat this one, though. It's just great.
Calapine hey I know it’s been a long time but it would be nice to see some more vids. I’ve been in love with them since high school & I had just started to get into Doctor Who around that time. Now I’m older facing an uncertain future. Your videos really gave me an escape from this mundane world. They heighten what was already the greatest adventure anyone could’ve asked for.
Very nice video. Must say, I prefer Romana I over Romana II (Sarah Jane will always be my favorite.) However, Mary Tamm is just amazingly beautiful and a finer actress. i just feel that Lalla's relationship with Tom in real life took away from the intrigue of the Doctor/Romana dynamic, knowning that they were shacking up behind the scenes.
A beautiful, beautiful tribute - especially in this time of loss. Couldn’t conceive how the departure of Tamm to other realms would affect me. Thank you Calapine. And long may your adventures in time and space continue, Mary Tamm.
Actually I always thought that Mary Tamm was Tom Baker's Best Assistant. She was the only one that ever seemed to stand up to him, and make him back down. Its a pity that Mary Tamm has passed on, I think it would have been great to do some more material with Tom and Mary as Romana I. I always thought she left too early. Had she stayed she probably would have been as fondly remembered as Lis Sladen. Unfortunately, we're left with mostly that silly Key to Time Story Arc as her signature.
how terrible. rip. Mary Tamm, and Romana 1. this is aspecially sad considering we just lost elizabeth sladen last year. goodbye Romana 1, and good bye my Sarah Jane. :(
@98flygirl I agree one zillion percent. no on can ever replace Romana....... EVER! I don't care if i wasn't born yet when she was a character! it was my loss! NOW BRING HER BACK IF YOU KNOW WHATS GOOD FOR YOU!
These two always reminded me Emma and John from the Avengers a little not sue if anyone else feels the same but the two characters always worked and very often they had some interesting stories that almoost reflected the Avengers stories along the way of course this was probably because of Terry Nastians involvement in both serieses and possibly there were some similar storyline?
I prefer Romana I, but you make an interesting point. I know I'm in the minority on this one, lol. I do think Romana I would have changed as well (even without regenerating). The main complaint I see about R1 is that she's too haughty - she *had* just come from the Academy, I think she would have become a little more like the R2 you describe as she spent more time with the Doctor. But that's just my opinion :-)
I'm trying very hard to suppress my first reaction, which is, "Eeeeeeee!" Four/Romana is my second favourite ship after Seven/Ace (and yes, I went and watched your Seven&Ace fanvid as well). This is awesome and brilliant.
I watched the other night, The Pandorica Opens, and there was something I didn't pick up when I viewed it the first time. The written in ancient Gallifreyan got me thinking. Obviously River's has to be a Time Lady, quite possibly Romanadvoratrelundar, aka Romana. She was intelligent, witty, and a good companion for the Doc. Is Romana River's? I guess we will soon see :)
if u're on about the pairing? yes, they did try to outdo and insult one another quiet allot didn't they? Lol! I still think the Doctor shouldn't be paired up with anyone though. It's a gd vid nice timing. *thumbs up* I should be finishing my own when i finally get some deadly assassin clips of him inside the matrix and the begining. Hard to find, if anyone has any ideas on how i can find some, without having to resort to the dvd, plz say. The sooner i know, the sooner i can get it done. XD
@blackwhimsy , ah, but is she Romana or Rani? She did say say that she was sorry and that he would find out who she is very soon and that's when it would all change. But then again, in the library, she did whisper the Doctor's real name into his ear and it's so much of a secret, there is only one time he could tell someone that...hmm.
Y'know, I'd much rather view these scenes of the fourth Doctor without added music. I watch the video for the clever dialogue and for remembering Tom Baker as the Doctor; not for some excuse to hear a song I care nothing about.
To fatlad1231....there's a beautiful clip of Mary & Tom together from just a few years back at a signing for something. All I can say is they both looked very happy & relaxed in each other's company. Either they both got over whatever issues there were or it's just a nasty rumour someone started who does not have a life. I respect Tom and the late Mary Tram very much.
I wish they'd seperate the DVDs - I really want the ribos operation and the stones of blood but not the whole season. She was hot because she knew her worth and she was hot because she was complex and had faults and strenghts. And she was hot because she just was
as far as fangirly pairings go, I think the Doctor and Romana is one of the more excusable ones, partly cos she was one of the better companions, and mostly because after I've seen the Doctor paired with Davros(and I have)then I am no longer surprised.
But Romana was never the Doctor's assistant, she was his partner and equal, which made her different from all other companions......even Rose Tyler. :)
@iloveabba100 Haha yeah forgot about her! Lalla was a real looker, great outfits if I remember correctly,I don't mind saying I had many a teenage daydream about that particular assistant! ;D
@TheD0CT0RWH0fan If she was Romana or another Time Lady for that matter, wouldn't she have regenerated when she died in "Forest of the Dead?" Unless she had used up all of her regenerations, that is.
@rocklee1397 Oh, yeah, no resemblance at all. Hell, Tom Baker was so popular they actually had to bring back the Master and do a bunch of specials when he regenerated, just to smooth things over...
@TheDaedalEVE Sorry we'll have to agree to disagree on Romana 2 but Amy Pond (if she's the one I'm thinking of, straight reddish hair) then yeah She is nice to be fair.
I hope they actually bring back Romana. Say, through the chameleon arch or something. THAT would be brilliant. Or the Rani! She'd've been a brilliant villain if she'd had better episodes.
@Alexm799 Nope, The second Romana (Princess Astra) was better looking... but Sarah Jane was one of the best. But no one holds a flame to Amy Pond in the newer series. so =P
To "alzarianfox"......Romana 2 appeared with Tom Baker/4th Doctor...not the 10th Doctor. Not sure how you got that wrong. Maybe try watching To. and Lalla together. You might notice they really like each other and have some phenomenal chemistry together. I wish Tennant fans wouldn't come on videos of Tom and try to shove Tennant (who I respect and like) down our throats. Tom is the best Doctor. Just my opinion. God bless.
Hello again! Just popped in to say that Season 18 is now my favourite of Tom's seasons, and possibly my favourite of the entire classic series! It really gets to the heart of what I love about Doctor Who. Space exploration, great character drama, witty fun and imaginative ideas. Tom's never been better either. How have you been doing?
Linda Taylor You're trying to shove Tom Baker down our throats at every chance you get. Not everyone loves him as much as you do. Not everyone wants to have his babies like you do.
To "modernlaura".....I like Eccleston, Tennant & Smith but I ADORE TOM BAKER'S Doctor. Maybe I should go on all the Tennant and scream out how much I love Tom. On second thought I don't want to disrespect any body's fans like that. Tom does rule though!Lol.
