I heard a story today that I had completely forgotten about - I remember joining the Aston Villa's women's team in the late 80s and I didn't understand why we weren't fully associated with AVFC and was told the following. In WWI women stepped up to take on factory jobs, ammunitions etc and farming jobs they also started playing football to raise spirits and money for the war effort. The war ended and ppl went back to their lives but womens football continued for a few years as it remained popular and even outdid mens football. The most popular male or female team in the country at that time were the Dick, Kerr Ladies, watched by 53k people at Goodison Park on Boxing Day 1920. In 1921 the FA were concerned about getting the mens game back to where it was before the war. Clearly the womens game was taking the attention and the FA money. How would one remove an obstacle ...ah lets meet to discuss a very serious unproven rumour that some gate receipts were being mishandled. Without much further ado the all male committee met & banned women from playing in England for 50 yrs. It effectively killed the grassroots organized women's football. This was the FAs goal as all they cared about was the mens game and they thought it unseemly that women played sports, so a win win... What a fantastic film or series this wld be...the ending wld be the England team winning the Euros in front of the biggest crowd for men or women in a football final 😊... isn't life a wonderfully strange thing.

Fantastic game, super happy for the Lionesses, I love how they didn't get flustered at the equalizer. And I love how one goal was poetry in motion, elegant and creative and the other was scrappy and determined. And I love how all these players were probably a couple sheets to the wind when they crashed the presser! I'm an American but I love this team!

Come back here at the start of the Men's World Cup. I'd love to see this passion and energy from the guys. On paper, the England men's team is one of the strongest squads in the world. We have 300 million pounds worth of attackers on the bench against Iran. If they had the enthusiasm of the Lionesses, the Lions would dominate the World Cup as the ladies dominated the Euros.
