Another great Ampico Fox Trot, played by "The Sherry Bros", which was the nome de plume for Frank Milne. Stereo recording of the same roll: www.box.net/shared/t8bg6keqa1
This has always been one of my favorite rolls, but I've only ever heard MIDI scans of it with poor emulation of the Ampico coding. It's great to hear the real thing on a properly-maintained piano!
I envy you ... a Mason & Hamlin AND an Ampico player. I have a Steinway D that I would trade in a heartbeat for a M&H CC. :-) Greatest piano company ever. Thanks for posting.
I'm a piano technician, and I don't think the piano was tuned in any special temperament other than equal temperament. That's just the gorgeous sound of a quality piano when it's in tune. Pretty nice when all the harmonics line up, eh?
This piano is absolutely exquisite! Do you know the brand of hammers installed? My Knabe A is due for new hammers. Thank you for posting this beauty!!!
+rwkde Sorry...a bit late in responding. :) These excellent hammers are hand made by Ari Isaac of Torronto Canada. www.isaacpiano.com The bass strings are also made by Ari.
It could very well be.....Ampico was known for 'adding' notes to a roll, so it would have a fuller sound and a better sounding arrangement. Lots of the rolls could not be played by just 1 person. :) Many times, they would add the word "asst" meaning another person assisted in playing the piece.
@aardvaark069- I totally agree. (that Ampico is a superior system) For one thing it is far less tempo sensitive than Duo Art because of it's lock and cancel dynamics as opposed to the accordian pneumatic of the duo-art which is very tempo sensitive. However I think Duo Art is more responsive with accents because of the snake bites. Also I agree Ampico had better "pops" rolls. But Duo-Art did have Pauline Alpert!

I think, in the end, that the Ampico people had so much more fun with their systems possibilities than did the Duo-Art people. The Ampico seems far superior to me than the Duo-Art. I'm puttin' my Steinway Duo-Art up for sale and lookin' to get an Ampico system piano.
