After landing in Majuro, I realized something familiar. That it felt like I was back in the USA, only still many miles away. Why does Majuro have such a strong American influence?

Summer 1990, I worked on Majuro for COM, teaching 2 English classes. The people I met there were nice folks, including the leader of COM (at the time), Hilda Jetnil, and Selina who worked with Jetnil. I briefly met Lanny Kabua once, and a nice waitress at the Plumeria Lounge (?). In Hawaii, I met the RMI President (and his wife) at the Ramada in Waikiki in 2015. I also met a cool Marshallese guy, Tom Luther, working at the HSH in Kaneohe, and a Marshallese nurse at Unit U. YUKWE to all of you nice people.

One thing O’ahu isn’t short of besides Filipinos, is Marshallese and Micronesians! I have met many kind ones here apart from of course those in the Marshall Islands! Glad you have fond memories of kind people 😊😊😊

I would love to visit this island. I was stationed on Guam in the 1980's and loved the people. Majuro looks to be a great destination spot to stop and take in the sights.

Well I certainly hope you enjoyed your stay. I hope next time you come to the RMI you'll get a chance to go to the outer islands, that is where the culture is still strong. They most welcoming to foreigners or people from other atolls.

@@aperezvoyages Since I worked on the Kwajalein Atoll area as a Police Officer on Kwjalein. The outer Islands I visited were in that Kwajalein atioll area. Now the capital city was my second home Because I was married to a Marshall Islander. She passed in 2016 but, we raised three (3) sons and one daughter. My two oldest sons are US Marines, US Army and my daughter is currently in US Navy Basic Boot camp. My youngest son is still in high school. So glad I worked and lived there about 14 years. So in reality my name now is a Marshallese family name since two of my children were born there. Being a widower and single dad. I count the blessings plus, one day contemplating retiring there in Majuro.

Interesting your perspective of Majuro! But even better if your mention to the outer islands. The main plane for air Marshall Islands was undergoing repair in Australia at the time so I couldn’t go to Jaluit atoll like I wished. So instead went to Arno nearby. How can I travel to the Marshall Islands from Houston? How many connecting flights and where?
@deborahlijaro7490
@deborahlijaro7490 3 года назад
From Houston you might have one more connecting flight to Hawaii Oahu, than Majuro Marshall Island. I think United has 3 flight a wk if I am not mistaken. The Marshall island is a day ahead of the states.
@aperezvoyages
@aperezvoyages 3 года назад
Yes what Deborah said! United is the airline service the marshalls internationally other than Nauru. You’ll more than likely fly straight to HNL then to MAJ. if not either connect in Phoenix or LAX. Assuming the marshalls are not closed off to covid

@@aperezvoyages yes in Hawaii they are faced with alot of discrimination. . . because of the amount of crimes these other micronesian people commit ... and the first thing the locals do is point fingers at the marshallese because they look similar to the other micronesian people... so basically they are being blamed for another culture from the micronesian communities crimes simply because they look similar

It should feel like the US because the Marshall Island it is the United States. Just like Puerto Rico and some of the Virgin Islands. If you look at the definition of the United States, the Marshall Island is part of the definition. So, the people will have their own culture, their own language besides English and their own things but at the end it is just like going to another state.

the US tested Nuclear weapons off bikini atoll. The United States is in debt the Marshall islands for all the disastrous calamity illness from the nuclear fallout , 50 years later several atolls are uninhabited due to levels of Radiation. Marshallese are having to build Sewalls due to global warming and the ocean over taking their land. I was shocked when I visited in 2019! Fortunately Marshallese can work and live in the US with that visa requirements. In the past 20 years a third of the population has left the Marshall islands
