You should record a short piece written for instruments in various keys, Bb trumpet, F Horn, C trombone… but every part is played on this bone with slide transposition. No pesky rewriting or mentally transposing. Set the slide, play what’s written.
@SoldrfMfortune

We really DO need to return to the days of composing songs for unorthodox instruments and instruments in rare/unusual keys. Guitar and bass seem to be the only ones using funny tunings and weird bells and whistles (string specific "benders" for example, or specific string count). The classics (and their composers) became such because of the perpetual experimentation and pushing the instruments and their players to the limits. Players of classical instruments need to reclaim that crown from the worlds of Rock-'n'-roll and Metal.

Might as well step up to making a Firebird then. It's the trumpet version of a Superbone, but the slide only has 4 positions.
@btat16
@btat16 2 года назад
Reminds me of the original design of the French horn, the natural horn. It could only play the natural harmonics, but you can change keys by changing the crooks and “transposing” the harmonics. Something like that but for the trumpet family would be interesting

Great job Trent! This was a difficult project but you pulled it off well. My high school band had one of the original Frank Holton Superbones in the instrument closet. It wasn’t in great condition but it was fun to play. It’s surprisingly ergonomic since they designed the valves to sit shorter and be easier to reach. We used it as a bass trombone replacement. Personally I loved it for jazz playing, if I had the money for one I’d try and get one of the Schagerl rotary models.

I always learn something from your videos, Trent. Today I learned “ad hoc” means “out of tune.” Latin is no longer taught so much here in the United States of Americaland, so it’s good to pick up that phrase and I can’t wait to sprinkle it about in conversation with my friends down at the center of our culture, the 7-11 parking lot.

Pretty dang spiffy. It would be neat to see some attempts to clean up the cosmetic issues. This type of DIY brass instrument repair is pretty tricky and often yield results that make the overall appearance of an instrument go down rather than up despite the intent. So this is the perfect test bed for experimenting with such techniques since it might actually be impossible to make this ugboniphone look worse at this point. It has been really cool to see you branch out into taking apart and resoldering brass instruments, and more of this would be great on some of your other project horns. But cosmetic repairs, refinishing/laquer would be fun to watch too.

Might it be possible to flip the second valve back around and tuck its slide in between the valve block and the bell section? That would take the big lump out from under your palm, which I think would go a long way toward making the instrument not feel like a prototype. It would be worth it, because it sounds fine and that's always the most important part to solve.
@johnpaulvanson5170
@johnpaulvanson5170 2 года назад
Great work. But a "superbone" with only one bell? There's room for improvement there. Why settle for one bell when you can follow Adolphe Sax's fine example and make a trombone with not one, not two, but seven bells? Surely that will be true perfection.

Make a trombone with a multi-wrapped slide? I once made a double wrap tenor, and it brought the fundamental down to D quarter flat. Using calculus, I estimate a third slide length would bring it down to Ab0 (so its pedal notes would begin right below the range of the piano.) Ab contrabass trombone. Then a fourth slide length would lower it to the E quarter flat below. You'd just have to figure out how to hold four adjacent slides and attach a sufficient counterweight for your E quarter flat subcontrabass trombone.

@wiebemartens1030
@wiebemartens1030 2 года назад
Possible? Yes, if it is placed at the go around bit at the end of the slide. This as the slide consists of a tube sliding over an inner tube, which wouldn't be working if it is interrupted by a valve section. What would be possible is having the valve section placed a little more in the direction of the slides and have that end earlier on the way to the bell. I think that's how other superbones work

5:35 It is impossible to change the primary key with a slide. When the key is lowered by a semitone, the length of the tube required to lower the key by another semitone increases. The 1-2pos length and the 2-3pos interval are longer in the latter. It makes more sense to change the key with the valve and adjust the difference in spacing with the slide. Same for 7pos (2pos) fine adjustment when using the F valve. (Sorry. I use Google traansrator.)

Don’t wanna be that guy, but wouldn’t it have been easier to just use the slide with your left hand, (using the trombone mirrored to what you normally would, with the counterweight behind your right shoulder), rather than reorganising all of the tuning slides? Then you’re also using the valves with your right hand which is the more common approach to use for most brass instruments (everything apart from French horns off the top of my head). Also, instead of rings or hooks for your pinky and thumb, maybe a bar that could join to the valves replicating the tubing you hold on a tuba? Just a thought, that’s all
