Also many manufacturers recommend mixing heavy and light loads with the protective devices to help heat dissipation, so starting with the heaviest and working down isn't always the best method though it is (or was) common practice.

Excuse my ignorance, but why should be there any heat to dispense, unless there is something wrong, like loose connection. Flow of electricity can generate heat but in a 100A installation even in maximum demand it's negligible if the design and installation are right. Regards

The problem with RCBO Neutral tails, is they are made of multi stranded copper that just goes where it wants, I always trim it to reach the furthest point on the N bar, and crimp it with a ferrule to keep the CSA as it should be, as it is a current carrying conductor, right?... ;-) and stops stray strands of copper. keep it neat kidz :-)

RCBOs and RCDs do offer the same level of protection. You can now get split load boards where the RCD/RCCB is Type A also, so these offer the same level of protection as individual RCBOs. Saying that, RCBOs although more expensive are always preferred for convenience in event if a fault occurs.

The Regs do make me laugh at times. So you have to fit metal consumer units to contain a possible fire fine. Then you can fit a few meters away a plastic adaptable box full of screwtype din rail connectors, not even maintenance free and that complies. I have done it myself on occasion so not having a go at Nagy, just does not really make sense.

I rate RCBOs, i think the main advantage is the ability to locate the circuit with a fault which is tripping an RCD much faster than with the use of MCB despite how expsenive they are. They are definitely worth installing in a property that does not require RCD protection as well

£600 for a fuse board replacement. Cost me over £800!. Quick story, Had a ' smart meter' fitted, the "expert" messed around for a couple of hours, was on the phone almost constantly talking to someone else, asking for advice on fitting whatever she was attaching to my consumer unit, all the power suddenly went off some quiet swearing from her, then she told us that it wasn't anything she had done (we had had zero issues with the board since we moved in 14 years ago) and we need to replace the board. As obviously there was a loose wire. I asked if she was up for finding the loose wire, said she wasn't qualified!

If the CU has to be made of a non combustible material are there any regs that say that your extension junction box which has most of the same connections also needs to be non combustible? I know you can get some adaptable boxes from Gewiss that are made of UL94:V-0 plastic but they are special order compared to the UL94:HB version that most wholesalers have on the shelf.

Just because some RCBOs are Type A some RCDs are type AC, doesn't mean they're all like that.
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 5 лет назад
The only true advantage of RCBOs over RCDs is that in case of an earth fault only one circuit trips rather than half the place or even all of it. I'd like them but considering the prices it'd probably be cheaper to get a 2-pole RCD and MCB for each circuit rather than an RCBO round here. Besides, in Austria there's still an ongoing debate whether it's acceptable to have overcurrent protection and earth-leakage protection in one device (backup protection in case of a defective RCD in a TN-C-S installation is the MCB and the reasoning of some is if both are in the same moulded case, both could fail at once).
@jonnywilson9117
@jonnywilson9117 5 лет назад
So, if some RCBOs are type A and some RCDs are type AC, it doesn't mean they're all the what they're specified to be?
@sophieclips
@sophieclips 5 лет назад
@@Ragnar8504 also the advantage when used with equipment that has a natural earth leakage the 30mA is per RCBO, not 30mA or 2x30mA (60mA) per installation!
@Mark1024MAK
@Mark1024MAK 4 года назад
Ragnar8504 - eh? A RCD is not a over-current protection device, and a MCB will happily let its rated current flow to earth, only tripping if the current goes significantly above its rated current. So I don’t see how separate RCD and MCB offers greater protection than a RCBO.

Love the videos ! If you have two 20 way boards off a single phase supply does that mean the possibility over loading the main fuse ? How do you know what you can get away with? do you have to do the calculations when having a so many circuits ? Just curious I'm still learning thanks.
@tlangdon12
@tlangdon12 5 лет назад
It's possible to overload the main fuse using a two-way board (e.g. 60A main fuse with two 50A MCBs). You have to do a calculation of the maximum demand of the installation, but you can apply diversity within the calculation. Diversity is the concept that not every item of electrical equipment is in use as the same time, hence every final circuit will not always be drawing the maximum power it can. There are set formulas for the diversity on different sorts of final circuit.
@Sarcastix7
@Sarcastix7 5 лет назад
The incoming supply is 100 amps. You're very unlikely to be using the full 100 amps all at oncebut you'd factor in diversity of loads. Electricians don't usually have to calculate diversity on a residential install and they can just use their intuition and for anything industrial, the electrical engineer will usually have calculated diversity in the design of the system.

Type A etc. RCCBs exist the same way as RCBOs do. In fact it's often easier to get Type A RCCBs than Type A RCBOs.
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 5 лет назад
Actually it is easy to get them since the UK is still in the EU. Here in Germany the installation of type AC RCDs was banned for new installation already in 1984, for the obvious reasons of getting problems with switch-mode power supplies which were upcoming at that time at a larger scale. Standard here is the type A. You can use your UK amazon credentials on the german amazon site (amazon.de), search for RCD with the fitting tripping current. They will ship it to you without additional costs, but if you got prime, this won't arrive the next day. For example this one here: www.amazon.de/Eaton-236748-FI-Schalter-40A-30Ma/dp/B000UW4EGE/ref=sr_1_28?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=rcd+30ma+40a&qid=1565731567&s=gateway&sr=8-28 But I would only do this if there's no other alternative to this, for example you don't want to change the whole board just simply replace the RCDs. It was not mandatory to replace all of the AC RCDs, it was only not permitted to install them in a newly built electrical installation. And when the old ones caused problems (tripping below 50% of the tripping current), they were replaced by type A. So no additional costs to customers.

When cutting the leads on the RCBO's, those are stranded wires right? (The neutral leads) Isn't it a requirement to put crimps on them these days? at least over here its a requirement, especially under screw terminals. Unless the contacts are specifically designed to accommodate stranded wires without ferrels. Its to make the stranded wire into a solid core to create a better contact area. (The strands dont frey and get spread out when under the terminal)

40 ways in that house? On some old tired looking incomer that comes out through garage wall! Think that customer needs to get a price to pull in 3 phase if they add much more lol 😂

In my house, I have an old board which is part RCD protected with several MCBs and part straight off the mains switch with several MCBs. If there is a fault on one of the RCD protected circuits, half the house goes out which is all the rings - pain in the arse. RCBOs would protect the system, one circuit at a time.

Thats at least "16th edition" or older. Nowadays, "18th edition", in a domestic installation every circuit must be protected by an RCD more or less. There are multiple ways of achieving it, A separate RCBO for each Circuit is the best but also the most expensive, which not many people are willing to pay for. When a fully populated 10 way Dual RCD split load board can be bought for under £100, but RCBO`s are around £30 each + the Board it soon adds up

Great vid as usual buddy 👍 Could you leave a link to those DIN rail connectors you're using? Cheers.

They`re just the IMO ones that are usually on a stand in the showroom of most wholesalers, or you can get them in boxes of 100 from Lockwells etc but then you have to buy end plates etc too heres a few uk.farnell.com/c/connectors/terminal-blocks-accessories/din-rail-terminal-blocks?brand=imo-precision-controls

Use wago din rail blocks. No screw terminals they just have spring retention and you just slide a wago tool in for assembly. Lots of sizes and configurations available. Buy a full kit and it comes in a posh Bosch L boxx

Nagy! Do I see you using NWS cutters? Now I love you so much more 😍 They just feel right in your hands! Actually saying they feel right in your hands after saying I love you sounds quite inappropriate 😂

Snarky Mark CUs are complex items. The wire bends need to have the correct radius otherwise the electrons won’t flow out. 😂
