It's Hard to Beat Trail Running in San Diego

This was a quick ascent of Mt. Woodson starting from Lake Poway. While the radio towers at the summit aren't the most scenic, the surrounding views more than make up for it. And the hardpacked moderate trails make for great fun descending. A famous landmark Potato Chip Rock resides near the summit - would I locate it? And would I make it down before dark?

Agreed - it was a good year for variety. I have to try to put other a Year in Review video before we hit 2024. Always interesting to reflect on the year's activities and adventures.

Yeah it was only a ten minute drive from my conference which was in the suburban hills. The downtown area was about 45 minutes away. Mt. Woodson is sort of right on the line between the developed areas that extend to the coast and the desert/mountain region that is less developed to the west.

Oh yeah, I absolutely love work travel. Staying in hotels and exploring new places is always fun. Every December we host this conference which switches between the coasts. Florida is always fun but it's Florida so it doesn't much wow me. But California on the other hand...I knew I had to spend a few days exploring.

Too bad you missed the chip! I agree the trails are much smoother and the grades are easier than New England. I just did Willey and Field two days ago and my legs are still sore. Looks like you had a great trip. Happy new year!

Happy New Year John! Yes this was a great trip - very glad I went out early before my conference began. Now to get back up to the Whites where hopefully there is at least some winter. Ain't none here in Rhode Island!

I grew up in Southern California but have done very few summits down there. If I get back there for any length of time, I'd love to do some peak bagging! Some great views, especially at night when you can see the city.

It's a fantastic area. The conference was in the suburbs about 30 minutes from downtown. It's all rolling hills - I took an Uber 10 minutes to Mt. Woodson - and weather was 75 and sunny every day. As an outsider it's fascinating for me because I love the juxtaposition between Oasis and desert. Man has terraformed it so much that it's always a surprise to remember that much of the surrounding area is just brush and rock.
