I hope all the beautiful ladies out there had a HAPPY MAMA'S DAY! We're processing our meat birds today & stocking the freezer for the next year with fresh, homegrown chicken. Hunting & fishing is GREAT, but you don't always get lucky. We like to ensure that our food comes from our land one way or another. On our homestead, we produce dairy, eggs & meat from our sheep & chickens. Come along for a beautiful spring day on our Alaskan homestead for a day in our life of processing & packaging meat birds for long term storage. Cheers!

CORNBREAD RECIPE
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup yellow cornmeal
⅔ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
⅓ cup neutral oil or melted butter
1 large egg
1 cup milk
1. Grease a 9-inch round cake pan or cast iron skillet well and set aside. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, add the flour, cornmeal, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Whisk to combine well.
3. Make a well in the center of your dry ingredients and add your oil or butter, milk, and egg. Stir just until the mixture comes together and there are only a few lumps remaining.
4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is a deep golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
CHILI RECIPE (I always double this recipe for leftovers)
1 pkg. McCormick® Seasoning Mix
1 lb. lean ground beef (or whatever meat you choose)
1 can (14 ½ oz.) diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can (15 to 16 oz.) kidney, pinto beans or black beans undrained
Assorted Toppings: shredded cheese, chopped onions or sour cream
1. BROWN meat in large skillet on medium-high heat. Drain fat, or not!
2. STIR in Seasoning Mix, tomatoes and beans. Bring to boil. Cover. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve with toppings, if desired.

IMHO, NOBODY who eats meat should criticize your methods of raising your chickens OR how you dispatch them. They have had a FAR BETTER short life than their neatly packaged supermarket cousins (until the moment of their final demise). Also, why are vegetarians and vegans watching this video after seeing the VERY CLEAR description of content???

Agree 100%! Title & thumbnail are clear…yet they still click & attack. Lol. We’re used to it at this point. Has zero effect on us. We’re still rollin’!

Hi.. I don’t eat red meat from choice- I don’t call myself a veg.- I eat fish and chicken..all because it’s my choice. However… I don’t make comments on how others eat or live their lives… Sure I can’t watch certain things- but that’s me… I can’t watch any kills.. never have been able to. Don’t make comments.. Don’t watch… It’s not your life…it’s theirs..I love this family.. I watch a Canadian who lives on his meat too… I just pass over those parts…. Because their lives are good thoughtful kind lives….. When I look around there is very little kindness going on…

When you said "put them in the plucker" my first thought was "Man, when I was little, I was the plucker!!" So many people would not know how to survive if all of the grocery stores disappeared! 😀

I am a vegetarian. Have been since I was 16 (65 years old now) but I respect what you do. You raise your own meat. I respect that a lot more than people who condemn you, yet go to the store and buy meat. I choose not to watch. But I support what you are doing. Love from Northern Idaho!!!❤❤❤

We raised our children and still do on a farm. They learned how to butcher chickens, goats, rabbits, pigs, ducks, and cattle. The ones who did not want to butcher, helped with cutting and packing. Great life my children had and still have.

I also was Parkers age when I helped my parents and grandfather help process chickens on the farm and after we finished we had a nice country meal and made homemade ice cream and we talked to each other…( yes we actually looked at each other and talked) and it’s something I remember to this day something we did as a family and I am 67 years old now. Your truly amazing family and really enjoy watching your videos. I just wish Joe was here to help me screen in my back porch.Enjoy your life in Alaska.

Tina, I have no idea why you need to explain yourself. This is what life is about. You do a great job raising your food. Yes it is sad , but again…..that is life. My mom and dad taught me all the necessary skills, just like you do with Parker. We should all be able to take care of ourselves and realize the a chicken does not grow in a supermarket cooler! Thanks for taking us along! ❤❤❤

From a Secondary teacher from Australia, I love the teaching and learning opportunities Parker (whole family) has. I find it fascinating that the people who criticise and judge you, are the 1st to defend/get offended themselves when people criticise/judge or have a different opinion of their life choice. Live your life, and work hard. Love your videos.

You are amazing…processing your own birds is humbling. My grandparents raised 500 birds a year when I grew up. Some went in the freezer, the others were sold. It makes you appreciate where your food comes from. Try your cornbread in a cast iron skillet in the oven…it’s Devine.

We learned how to process chickens from an old timer couple when my kids were in 4H years ago. Best chicken ever and I'd love to do it again. One tip we learned: Put a 5 gal bucket under the cones with a few inches of water in it, and let the blood drip into the buckets. When you're all done, pour that blood water over your garden bed and you've just fertilized your garden. They had the most beautiful irises around from doing this!

The processing of chickens is pretty interesting. And do people think about what the grocery stores sell? The chickens had to be processed to. But your chickens you know were raised with love & tender care. Happy Mothers Day Tina ❤

I have seen teenagers & young adults who have no idea where their food comes from. Beyond the grocery store shelves, they don't have a clue! They would think you are cruel, but those who go get their meat from the store are not. I too believe that God provides animals for us to consume.

That de-featherer works amazing. When I was around 12 (over 50+ years ago) my grandparents bought a dozen chickens and we killed and cleaned them. My grandparents were afraid we wouldn't learn how to do this. I remember it taking forever to pull all the chicken feathers and it was such a mess. Nice set up for making that an easier chore.

I agree with u 💯 Tina. I think it’s great how Parker is getting to live, and he’s raised. There is no difference when ya go hunting deer, turkey, etc. Someone is dispatching those animals and it’s great when a kid gets to learn how this is done. Parker is a great kid, and one day he will be grown and then if he decides tht he wants to live tht life then he will have a huge head start. He will have so much knowledge about how things r done. Joe & Tina r great parents, I feel bad for the kids tht never get to live the country life. Keep doing what u guys r doing, 👍🏻🫶🏻🙏

Another awesome video Thankyou for taking us along Tina! I stopped eating chicken many years ago as the crap they pump into chickens to plump them up and to keep them on the supermarket shelves for 2 weeks is not meant for humans consumption. So seeing home reared and butchered chicken is very refreshing knowing where the meat was raised etc. Happy (belated) Mother’s Day from the U.K. ❤ 🇬🇧

For me it is a relative easy thing to think of...If one wants to eat meat, than it is definitively better to know the skills to raise and harvest. And if the whole process is full of respect for the animal, it is better than buying it in the grocery store. Greetings from Nadine from Berlin Germany

And I don’t think a lot of people understand these concepts unless they process their own foods. But I shot my 1st moose at 14 years old a block from our log home here in AK. I had to run and get my 3 wheeler to help butcher. And yes I was crying!! lol I remember mom kept saying oh honey this is so normal. That moose helped feed our family for a full year. Now so blessed that my husband and I instilled that same lifestyle into our kids. Fresh meat is so much better than store bought food. I learned that lesson the HARD way when I went to college because I actually got pretty sick from dorm food. I had to have my dad send me packages of Alaskan food all the way to Minnesota. lol Thank you for an excellent video. I just love watching you guys. Such a beautiful family. Big hugs to all.❤️

I actually only remember a chicken being processed once. I was somewhere probably between 3 years to 5 years old. She run the chickens head and I remember the chicken run all over with his head cut off for real. And she cooked up that chicken that night watched her pluck the feathers and everything. She was Babysitter back then. She was an awesome babysitter. That’s the time I ever seen a chicken processed and I was at young age and I’m 75 now so it would make sense back then. My mother knew how to do it, but I never seen Her do it. Her parents were sharecroppers in Texas and they picked cotton so that was her life growing up.

Some of my favorite memories from childhood are when our huge family would gather together to process meat on the farm. I asked my granddaughter if it bothered her that we butcher our meat and she said it taught her respect for what she eats.

It was funny to watch you folks doing the chickens. My mother was raised on a farm. It was not uncommon for mom to get fresh chickens from her farm family. When I say chickens I mean live chickens that we would be killing. We lived in the city. One year we received 50 chickens that we had to kill, pluck and clean . At this time we still use to can all the chickens. To this day I can still smell if anyone is stinging the chicken hair. Love watching your channel as it is good to see some parents who are not afraid to teach there kids how to live instead of just watching. We had only one boy and he was included in all the crazy things his parents did. He grew up just find. Parker will grow up to be a well rounded kid and not be afraid to enter the adult world.

Hey Jerry! Precious memories right?! I remember coming home from school & my mom processing rabbits on the clothesline in the backyard!🤣 I was devastated haha, I was the one that took care of them & always allowed myself to get attached even tho mom said not to! But the food sure was good.😊

I grew up on a farm. I remember when we butchered a lot of chickens. Dad used a block of wood and an axe. Then the chicken would dance around the ground “with its head chopped off “. Dipped them in hot water, then plucked all the feathers off by hand. The feathers would stick to everything. We used a small propane blow touch to singe the little pin feathers off. Dad would use his sharp knife to get the innards and cut the chicken up for frying. Packed and into the freezer until into the electric frypan to cook while we were at Sunday church. Served with mashed potatoes and milk gravy and a homegrown frozen vegetable. Loved the drumsticks or thigh and the milk gravy. We would all fight for the heart and gizzard.

For sure. Our 1st time ever doing meat birds, we didn’t have a plucker. I plucked 25 birds by hand, one by one. It was back breaking work. I’ll never do it without a plucker again!🤣
