IT'S IN BITS! - PILOT VLOG

We finally get the compression tester working and confirmed the 'soft' cylinder.
Then no compression meant we had to remove the cylinder and piston and send them away for testing.
I am not a qualified flying instructor nor do I ever claim to be a very good pilot. I fly for fun and basically record for my own interest and review but upload because a number of people suggested that I should. I do try to edit for enjoyment and story telling and this means that some content is not always included.

Not good that EH is in pieces but does make for an interesting video. Flying an engine 'on condition' and beyond TBO is fine but issues like this will come up and it's so good that you have plenty of knowledgeable and capable friends to help out. Enjoyable video as always Tim.

Thank you Terry. According to the engine log book it only has about 380 hours since a major overhaul.

Tim. Great to see the nitty-gritty which adds yet another very interesting dimension to the vlog. Hope all the hard work/wait solves the issue !

Thank you. Not easy to film in odd light and trying not wanting to get in the way!

Thank you Neil. It is good to have them around to help and seems ages since we all took our aircraft out for a squadron do.

Feeling your pain, Tim. A few hoops to jump through before the next flight, but it'll happen. Rooting for you and Echo Hotel! 👍😁

Hi Tim - I’m glad you are getting to the bottom of it. I love the “community feel” at Nayland. It’s lovely that you have people willing to help. I think a sticky valve would be a bit of a result to be honest, particularly if there’s no damage to the cylinder or piston. Fingers crossed she’s up and running swiftly - I’m following with great interest!

Thank you Nick. It is usually a great place with supportive pilots and that is very nice! Fingers crossed it is just a matter of a valve re-grind

I’ve been following you now pretty much from the beginning, and I think this was the first time I haven’t watched it on the day you uploaded. But I have a great excuse, I was flying, which I think is perfect. A very challenging trip to Oxford airport, for some Nav practice. At least you are getting closer to the solution for EH to be up and about soon. Always interesting to see engines being dismantled, and just how big are those pistons!!. Which is why these engines can run for hours at a time. Looking forward to you saying “clear prop” soon

Thanks for the support Tim. Glad you got to fly (and that is the main thing!) Just waiting now for the return of the pot and the cylinder. The bits I need for re-fitting have been ordered in the hope that it might be a simple sticking valve solution but we will have to wait and see.

Hope you get the engine back together and back up again soon Tim. You know what I think every time I watch any aircraft in your videos taking off or landing, I wonder, what are the limits? The weight, the wind, strength, direction etc - with a one way in, one way out runway. What's the max tailwind you can take off with? And what do you prefer, tailwind on takeoff or landing?? A video "brief" on the various procedures for arriving and departing at that fascinating airstrip would be fascinating (especially as I should be flying in there at some point soon!!)

Thanks for watching Charlie and the comment. I have in the various playlists answers to most of your questions. It doesn’t look as if I will be flying before next weeks video so maybe a good idea if I pool some of these together? 😎👍

It’s good to see that you are getting to the bottom of the troublesome pot . I’m not much of a mechanic , so I found this video very informative . It should be running like a Rolex watch soon . It’s comforting to see you have such good support over at Nayland . Cheers and my best wishes .

Thank you Dave. Hopefully this will sort it out and that it won’t be too costly. It is nice that we all help each other out at Nayland.

I would have expected it to be a sticky valve or bad burn valve seat, not a problem with the piston or rings, as you got no pressure build up. Sounds like I am going to have to make a landing at Nayland (if we get any good weather). I hope you get it sorted soon!

Like we say with humans who get diagnosed with something, "at least we know what's wrong now". I'm pretty sure it will all be back in one piece and making lovely engine sounds in plenty of time for the better weather. It is always interesting to watch the engineering but I'm sure you can do without the inconvenience of it all. Good to see the other activity at Nayland too.

Well thats a BUGGER. Interesting to see whats inside. Naturally when running road gas you will get more carbon build up on top of piston such as you have there. Hence be replicated on Valve. Thats why I mentioned lil Lead conditioner would suit it. Get them to send you pic,s of valve as found and then when cleaned and lapped in. The Rolls Royce are limited to a TBO here of 1200 hours. As John said hours were,t known so this may indicate that. Just like you I had to same on my Jodel back in the day. One thing just as a side I painted a round Orange circle round the Sump plug as easier to see any leaks against the Orange. I am in same boat as you at the mo as My Minicab that doesn't,t wanna fly might now as it has been the Original Coils giving us all the Hassle so new ones in now. So she might have fighting chance now. Bloody sure Planes way worse than Boats and I have both. Be well fly often stops one getting all stiff like. ;0) Cheers Nick

Thanks Nick. Our LAA engines are all on condition although according to the log book it only has about 380hours since major overhaul. Hope you can get the Minicab sorted.

Oh dear Tim, I hope this can be sorted with the minimum of fuss for you?? I have a serious problem now with my exhaust pipes cracking and after 60 years they will unfortunately have to be replaced!! I suspect this is going to be a long old job ....

Hi Tim. Its not clear on the video but during the test on the low cylinder did you listen to whether the air was escaping through the carb, exhaust or breather. The listening through the carb and or the exhaust tells you a valve let by. The breather a rings, piston let by.

There was lots of hangar noise as the wind was blowing the tin, Duncan was running the D18 and there was workshop noise from next door but John usually does.

Good luck with that Tim, excellent detailed camera work once again. Really interesting comment re permit flyers working on their own aircraft, which is difficult to find on youtube. This channel is a great mix between lovely Suffolk countryside and personal anecdote. Incidentally, which company have you taken the cylinder to? Thanks again Russell

Not the best idea to turn the engine with a cylinder removed along with the through bolts. The shell bearings can spin worst case, if you must remove a cylinder it is good practice to reinstall the through bolts with spacers and fasteners. Do enjoy your video though.

I did a 5 years overall for my MT 3 blades propeller costing me a fortune just to air shipped to the UK and back . Out of curiosity, who sign off the maintenance release forms, you as owner or it has to be signed by qualified engineers??
