Around 20,000 foreign fighters are believed to have joined Ukraine's Foreign Legion to fight Russia. Among the stories of combat, accounts have emerged of volunteers leaving traumatized and disillusioned. Foreign fighters have said units lack organization and equipment, and some volunteers have dubious motives.

Many of US ex military guys are looking for meaning and purpose. Our own countries are being destroyed by corrupt politicians but instead of organizing locally, correcting our own communities some are directing this energy on behalf of corrupt regimes half a world away. It is true he has some years of fighting in some wars but he has not fought in a war against a modern military like Russia. The Taliban and the insurgents in Iraq didn't have planes and helicopters taking you out verses we as a modern military had all of that and used it on their rag tag forces. All of those men who went to Ukraine must have been craving action just not the big action Russia used on them. A lot of volunteers who went to Ukraine were killed in the war and Ukraine does not pay to have their remains sent back to their home country so that money has to come from volunteers in the USA and those other countries. Another bad thing for these guys if captured by the Russians is they are not recognized as POW's under the Geneva Convention the same way the US didn't recognized the Taliban. In Ukraine you don't have the support to save your butts like air and artillery fire and the medical service is lacking until you make it to one of their big hospitals. It is so hard to train and change the Ukrainian militaries way of fighting and that is the big reason why thousands of their troops are killed every month. Guys like this man are different than i am Ukraine could not pay me a high wage to join in their fight against the Russians. The Russians are winning and defeating Ukrainian forces in a fast pace now. Unless NATO does a stupid move and steps into fight the Russians this war and fighting will be over in less than a year from now. Every one find you a news source that does not lie about how the Ukrainian's are defeating the Russians none of that is true. All those F-16's will not help Ukraine much because they have no support to protect the F-16's from being shot out of the sky. All those worthless sanctions hardly made a dent in the Russian economy. I don't support Russia in this war against a weaker Ukraine never ever. There is a lot that we don't know because of keeping it a secret from public. I have some news sources from both sides of this war that i rely on to find out the truth of how the war is really going. I have not watched any of the West and main stream media news in over a year because of their one sided agenda i find to be pure false reporting. This here is how i see things from my point of view and i get very little of it wrong. We all have opinions and that's ok whether we are right from wrong

Hey Willie, I am a graduate historian that has done a number of oral history interviews with veterans in the United States. They ranged from World War II to the war on terror. This was a phenomenal interview and an excellent insight into the life of a foreign legion soldier. this is a beautiful primary source and I would love to see more of these interviews from all sorts of different perspectives. You handle these interviews very well. unlike other channels that interview people during this conflict, you do not interrupt your subjects which I find extremely refreshing. you ask the questions and they tell the story. The job of an interviewer is to listen more than to talk. That is why I find your interviews so engaging. It’s their story first and foremost. I had to rack my brain while watching to find a whole lot to critique. Perhaps allowing soldiers to explain their stories in chronological order rather than simply a list of questions and perhaps a better mic for yourself might be my only thoughts. But all of these questions were phenomenal and the answers were excellent. Great work as always.

@@ajstyles5704 Where did the OP say that he wants any war, anywhere, or to be a part of it? His father was a soldier, sailor, or airman, and taught his son the reality of this experience. I understand how kids see combat "like CoD" because their exposure to how wars work is curated by entertainment, for entertainment, and it serves to keep enlistment up and faith in the US Armed Forces high. They have seen war movies where men survive unrealistically and they're taught that if you are a super slick highly skilled operator, you will be infinitely more likely to stay alive. Same in the games they play and that's their only exposure to war - of course they don't understand it, no more than I understand how farms operate because I am not a farmer. They see that in, pretty much, any piece of entertainment they engage in that involves main characters who are involved in the military, the good guys with the greatest skill survive. We have games now like "Verdun" and "Hell Let Loose" which demonstrate a lot more of the tension, the bleakness, and the general waste of life that war has been across WW1 and WW2 specifically: But how many people, kids gaining an exposure to military concepts, will play a game where you sit for half an hour in a trench then die brutally from artillery shelling?

This is some of the most compelling evidence I've seen that the war isn't about Russians trying to conquer Ukraine but about Ukraine trying to conquer/subjugate parts of the former Ukraine that have had enough of the Ukrainian government and would rather be part of Russia at this point (which isn't to deny that Putin or the Russian government aren't in this for their own selfish reasons but that given the choice the people in these disputed areas when forced to choose would choose Russia over Ukraine.) I see a lot on confusion around the whole conflict in Ukraine. People mistaking getting involved in foreign conflicts as heroism. The United States government planted the seeds of this inevitable conflict in 2014 then bragged about it on Stephen Colbert's show. The United States government is also still facilitating the *actual* genocide of people in Yemen perpetrated by the Saudis. Where are all the heroes that want to help them? And I'm sure there will be no shortage of geniuses with brilliant arguments such as "so yOu lOvE PuTiN?" This is the most exhausting, smooth brained simpleton thing I have ever heard in my life. Amazing how quickly people can be propagandized into raving little warhawks that reject any notion of negotiated settlement in lieu of prolonged war. A war in which there is a 0% chance of Ukraine "winning" and a very high chance that this thing eventually escalates into world War 3. And if you think you're ready for all out war with the two of the world's nuclear superpowers, you need to take a long look at yourself in the mirror because you are dangerously stupid and naive. The same old criminals in the military industrial complex and federal government are behind this the same way they were with Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia, the list goes on. How can anyone that calls them self a decent person not understand the best thing to do is petition a cease fire and negotiate a peace agreement? This ain't the fucking movies and indeed this ain't call of duty. This ain't good guys vs bad guys. This is the real world and it's all bad guys. Do you want to keep shipping billions of your tax dollars (that your children will be paying for) to a country who's leader banned and jailed his political opposition? Banned an orthodox religion? Is by all rights as corrupt as any pick of the litter in Russia or our own government? For fucks sake. These interviews are gold and will become even more valuable as time goes on not many people are doing them. something that occurred to me while listening to this is around the question soldiers get 'why are you here'. The implication behind this question is that there needs to be some sort of special higher purpose which of course can be the case but I think the general public need to recognize and respect that this is their profession it would be like asking a firefighter why they go to fight fires.
@WarPicturesEntertainment
@WarPicturesEntertainment Год назад
The only difference is that an american firefighter will not go to Ukraine to extinguish a fire. In my personal opinion (maybe I am totally wrong) many of the foreign fighters (especially those who fought in Iraq and Syria) are kind of addicted to the war and like to be there. It gives them a meaning to their life, something that they cannot achieve in civilian life. Maybe I am wrong, but I think many of these guys are in Ukraine, because they are viewing it as adventurous. But when they realized that they aren't fighting some cigarrete sellers with AK47s, and that this war is mainly won by artillery, a lot of them left.

Sorry to say but from what I've gathered most of the bad stuff about the Russians is things he has HEARD, or had people in his team talk about. Never in person and that strikes me as abit odd, now its clear that this guy is suffering from combat fatigue, as it seems he has been under quite a lot of artillery fire. Furthermore I would point out how he repeatedly states that civilians would call in their position to the Russians and never the other way around? does seem like a majority of the civilians there would also be inclined to vote for independence from Ukraine in the first place? kind of makes this guy like the Hessian mercenaries fighting for the British during the US war of independence? lots of questions for a comment here but anyone else find this somewhat odd aswell?

not quite accurate reasoning. if you want accurate, consider propaganda (which is huge on a generational level) influence and ussr/russian politics of forceful migration of russians on ukrainian terrains etc and otherwise. this is simply russian expansion politics. comparing this to US independence war is misconception, cause origins of this differ completely, and actualy it's opposite. russia is still an empire, according to them ukraine is a rebellious colony, not a democratic independent state. in 2014 ukraine made it's progressive proeuropean choise, evicted prorussian puppet goverment, russia meanwhile used this transitional uncertainty period to invade crimea and start hybrid war on donbass. if you're familiar with historically russian methods, you should know, that they are very proficient with manipulations, propaganda and separatist movements and, of course, annexation of their proxy states, that ussr carefuly was setting up across most of it's republics. lnr/dnr are echoes of those decisions. fear and brainwashing are the best weapons russia have, you should always consider it, otherwise you will lose, cause you don't have clear picture and doing wrong conclusions.

But what youre saying here kinda reminds me of the talking points delivered by western mainstream media outlets like all of them. Dismissing everything you hear that doesnt conform to your idea is not doesnt make it propaganda, its simiply the other side of the story, But when someone tells me that someone else is the enemy id like to understand why. You dismiss my comment about the Hessians in the US Revolutionary war saying its not the same? then how can you claim soviet/russian propaganda is the same? like most of the prominent soviet leaders where either Georgian or Ukrainian? anyways, im well up for discussing the finer points of Propaganda, both Russian/Soviet and Azov/Langley talking points.

As someone who values the potential contributions that computers and computer science can bring to society, the title of this video captured my attention. This video is a year old now but the war is not over yet. As a man who has never been in the military but grew up during the Vietnam War and the aftermath of World War II and Korea and whose father and other ancestors fought in war time I respect the fighting man. I don't believe it is uncommon for boys to grow up with the dream of becoming a warrior some day. Some men live the dream and learn that it is more often a nightmare. First of all I want to thank Willy OAM for making this film. I thought you asked some very good questions without any agenda other than to reveal the truth of what is happening on the ground, at least from one soldiers perspective. And you let the man speak. As someone who aspires to be a Christian I will pray for you, that God will bestow a miracle on you, and heal you and allow you to live a full and healthy life. As an American, a patriotic American, I do not support funding this war. Some of my ancestors on my Mother's side were Russian from Odessa, but that was many years ago, the complicated political evolution of Ukraine makes it almost irrelevant and I have never thought of myself as anything but an American (with a German last name). In your interview the term 'war of attrition' is mentioned several times. A war of attrition is not really a war in my opinion but more of a gladiatorial combat. I just happen to have watched the movie 'Gladiator' recently and although I never equate Hollywood (or video games) with real life there are some historical references to take note of. "We who are about to die, salute you." Who are they saluting is the question. And what is the ultimate objective? "Are you not entertained?". The billions that President Biden and the "neocons" want to "stop Putin" as I write this a couple days after his 2024 State of the Union address will certainly kill a lot of people and provide a lot of money to "someone" for entertainment or anything else they want to spend it on. Perhaps rebuilding the landscape that has been "flattened". I have made investments in the past in the defense industry because I like technology. Defense, historically has been a strong driver. I support a strong defense because it is supposed to be a strong deterrent to the type of bloodshed we are witnessing today. I quickly disposed of any interests which might make money off of this when it started. Outside of my own personal inventory I only support this with my tax money and I vocally resist that. I often quote Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn when explaining why I am opposed to the escalation of any conflict. "The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts." There is evil in this world I think, but also good and a tremendous potential to do good. As far as the skills needed to process a war that has become unavoidable. I don't think "hunting rabbits" is a completely useless skill. But as someone who as I said, has never been in the military, or been trained for combat, and yet thought about how I might handle myself if drafted. I think physical fitness is important. Also teamwork. Like an American Football team. I would think that a good combat team would focus on a clear achievable objective with a plan and then execute. Also I have often heard it said that in combat a man fights for the guy next to him. Many years ago after the Vietnam war was over I saw an issue of Time magazine with a cover story on Ice Hockey. I cut it off and pasted it on the door to my room. It said "War on Ice". I liked the double meaning. Wouldn't it save a lot of misery if we could accept the results of a sports contest as a solution to a dispute. Kind of like the medieval concept of trial by combat or David and Goliath from the bible. "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." If we did choose Ice Hockey, the Russians would still be a formidable opponent. In closing God Bless all you guys. I know you are doing what you have to do. I hope you find what you are looking for and do your best to keep the collateral damage to a minimum. Let God render his justice on those who stand in the way of peace.
