It's not meant to be this difficult is it? | 2m SSB portable ham radio

The initial intention was to go to high ground for some portable ham radio and have fun making contacts, it quickly turns into a great British pastime of complaining about the weather and chuntering (moaning) about pretty much everything else...a great day out nonetheless.
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RU-vid channel features videos focusing on operating portable ham radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.
00:10 First chunter
00:50 Weather chunter
01:30 More chunter
04:00 Chunters chunter
06:00 Proper chuntering
09:00 Final chunter

You tried your best. There are good days and not so good days. I like that you include these times in your videos. It provides a realistic picture of the challenges of the hobby.

Thank you for bringing realism to radio in your videos. We all have those days when things don’t go quite to plan, keep up the good work.73

Carl, it looks like a great location to play radio especially vhf. I am glad at least that you had a chance to go outside as the rain finally let up a bit, but as long as you are having fun is all that counts, and again thank you for sharing I really enjoyed it!

Great video Carl, and a fair reminder of the kinds of things we can expect to encounter while trying to operate in the field. Here it can be nosey hikers, dogs, wildlife, black flies, mosquitoes and of course weather. The frustrations can pile up, but it's great to see you persevere through it. I am still saving up for the ic 705, but the screen glare issue is noted. In the meantime, I am not ready to start lugging the 756 pro3 up a hill for field ops. One thing that we can agree on is the thing that Friedrich Nietzsche and American pop singer both said: if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger! Okay, that was a bit of humour, meant to cheer you up. The collapsible antenna looks good. If I had one like it, I might try it on a tripod, or even a pole. Best regards from Canada's easternmost province, Newfoundland! Really appreciate the effort, the videos are great! 73 de vo1ja, Harold.

Cor mate that 705 in the rain would get me a tad edgy. Many thanks for the production.

Carl it’s been a long time since I last saw one of your videos as not had much time for RU-vid in last year and a half. I enjoyed this video very much, the quality of the video is really quite remarkable. BBC quality!

Some days are like that. Agree with you your comments regarding the 705 screen. Better with an 857 and a battery.

That looks a cracking location Carl but like you say if it's overrun with the public it get's a bit tedious when young kids are hanging around, they don't understand privacy ethics.

Looks like an excellent location, great view from there. There are more days like this than there are days of long pile ups and logbooks full of QSOs. I'm glad that you share these days with us... it paints a much more realistic picture of our hobby. It's not all glitz and glamor, some days you gotta work your tail off for one QSO. It's the thrill of the challenge that keeps me coming back. Thanks for taking us along.

Thanks Carl. I always look forward to your videos every week. I do like how you tell us where you are operating from... just wondering if there is anyway you could maybe tell us when you will be roughly transmitting. Lots of folk would switch on to see if they can hear you. Completely understand the number of people of people being distracting.. Best video of yours recently was the overnight wild camping one a couple of weeks ago. The scenery and nature sound track was fantastic.

Nice video Carl and showing the little annoyances you encounter using the arrow antenna. I wonder if a dab of loc-tite would help with the tiny treaded ends.

Good one Carl, how about a split charge system to charge that battery from the alternator as well. failing that one of those car jumpstarters that charge the battery via the cigarette adaptor. Also a bit of folded matte black cardheid for the radio display...OKOK enough ideas ;-P

2m SSB is very much dead most of the time but FT8 is better utilized. Try the evenings for 2m SSB events, that's when it gets way busier. There is one or two every month. Similar events for 6 are also fun.

Get a split charge kit Carl. Every mile you do in the Landy with charge the leisure battery. They are cheap as chips and dead easy to fit. Let me know if you need any help, we could make a joint vid of it!

They’re generally OK, but agreed that in very bright light that you might have to angle the screen a bit.

How to attract humans. 1. Put up antenna. I agree about screens in direct sunlight, everyone likes a nice waterfall etc but if you can’t see it then it becomes a nause. I suppose this is where the black and white lcd displays come into their own (x5105 etc) that and a good pair of ears.

Hi ,. See when you are out and about, do you ever become self conscious when there are people about? I had a PMR radio and I wanted to see how far I would get, so as I went walk about my wife stayed in the house taking note when I called in,,. People looking at me!!!! I felt such a fan*y 😳😊😆
