I work as a data analyst, I do experimentation, and am adjacent to the folks that actually work on the recommendation machine learning models. Your explanation is close to how it works but I think one detail is not talked about where the recommendation is not always completely personalized to you as 1 individual, it is often personalized to people clustered as being similar to you. So you probably have a “RU-vid fraternal twin” who watches almost the same subgenres as you and is a similar age and similar demographic, and all of you belong to the same other clusters like “women age 20-40 with a US IP address” and countless other ways to categorize viewers. The model will check what the chance of that cluster clicking its recommended video. And the model is retrained constantly on past data, always gets a little better based on your or your cluster’s most recent data. I assume because RU-vid has suuuuuch a high volume of data, the model must always be retrained every couple hours/at least daily. Personally I noticed one more thing that affects it. I bulk unsubscribed from every single subscription I had (300+). Then I added back like 60 subscriptions and most of my recommendations were from those subscriptions. So if you do a big change like that, I think it will affect it short term. Long term now most of my recommendations are as they were before I bulk unsubscribed.

I mostly agree with this but I still get frustrated when the algorithm consistently "guesses" wrong. Even when I select "don't recommend this channel" or "I'm not interested", I will *still* get recommendations from those channels (often a popular channel which remains within a genre that does interest me). It does feel like RU-vid promotes forced interaction and overall rewards channels with more clicks, which inevitably leads to redundant content. Recently I started browsing RU-vid with a new account and finally started getting shown new creators and the more creative content I prefer. I hope it lasts at least a little bit 😅

I can't "force use" any makeup either, like I just don't understand that mentality and the concept of "hate panning" just to use something up! I like to look back on pans I have created to see what it was I naturally gravitated towards which helps me learn my makeup preferences, I pan naturally just by using what I want to use - that is how I do it:)
@daraleigh6375
@daraleigh6375 Год назад
I don't know that I'd call it "force use". But I grew up in a home where I had to scrimp and save for make up because I had sensitive skin and couldn't use a lot of drugstore make up (in the 80s and 90s the perfumes were ungodly). That caused a spirit of thrift. As I've aged i have definitely been able to spend on my make up collection but that spirit of thrift still sits in my soul, where a $20 pallette represents 4 hours of babysitting. (Again, 80s and 90s kid ...) I can't just throw it away. So I challenge myself to use what I've bought. I bought it because I loved it, I just am not sure how to use it. But it makes perfect sense that older pallette reviews and tutorials aren't going to get the clicks because those already exist. That's how I found Angie in the first place, looking for inspiration (and courage) to use up a pallette that my comfort zone had only allowed me to use half of. Lol

I get excited about finishing something and feeling like I got my money's worth to the last dreg. Alternatively if a product is good and other products of the same type aren't going to offer substantial differences, I'll have a goal to use up the one I have before buying a new one. For example right now I would like to try a new lip balm, but lip balm, is lip balm and I already have three (they came as a trio) so I am determined to use those up before I buy a new one that's going to do the same job, much the same way, just with a different fragrance ... otherwise I'd end up with 100 lip glosses even though I only it a few times a week at most.

when I am searching for older palette content, I use the filters to search for "newer" uploads and that helps me find the smaller channels with little views (which I prefer usually over the 'big youtubers' content typically) so I do like that I have the ability to filter the results to newer uploads I have not yet seen

This is a great topic Angie. The algorithm is designed to act like an extension of us showing us content that is like things we have clicked on it. Recently I’ve noticed RU-vid is starting to show me beauty creators I’ve never heard of using brands and pallets that are supposedly popular that I’ve never heard of…….all boring neutral redundant and these creators have decent audiences. It’s like I never knew that world existed.

This is a very interesting convo for sure. I would like to add that, although it is true the algorithm does do some guess work based on past viewing trends for each account, it is not entirely neutral. What it chooses to recommend is not arbitrary and some creators have been buried by it before (this became especially obvious in the gaming community recently, some very eye opening videos were made by POC creators about that). They tend to favour bigger creators or videos that are already trending. Their rules also don't apply consistently (ie: age restrictions, see previous mention about gaming videos). They don't show you everything and even if you search and search specifically what you want, making use of their filters, it can be quite difficult to find. So it's a combination of several factors, viewers' behaviour included.
@siiri2052
@siiri2052 Год назад
i would agree to a point. the algorithm draws some weird conclusions at times. i watch a lot of news (reputable sources) and every once in a while the algorithm will go bananas and decide to pepper my suggestions with odd conspiracy channels because it seems to think that that falls under 'news'. then i reject all the crazy content, it gets itself back under control and a few months later it starts frantically searching for new stuff i might want to see that inevitably is most decidedly NOT what i want to see again. or it shows me a bunch of news clips from years ago. i don't think it understands how staying informed works :D

This is one of my favorite types of videos! Chatty GRWM where you spill the tea and give your thoughts. I always learn something. I enjoy new makeup releases and anti-hauls too. For new product reviews and first impressions, I skip ones from brands I don’t purchase from. For example I don’t buy from Pat McGrath so I skip videos about her palettes.
@missymaddie3518
@missymaddie3518 Год назад
I definitely prefer chatty videos to all other kinds of content. I'm different in that I never click on new releases videos, I find them really boring and unecessarily long. But I enjoy watching other people apply their makeup, and if that includes new products I'll still click if the content looks interesting

Angie's out here casually offending all the project panners haha 😅 In all seriousness though, I love project panning, but I totally agree with you that I cannot imagine "forcing" myself to use something up if I don't actually want to. As soon as I notice a project panner (even someone whose content I love) starting to "hate pan" products, I move on. That said, I am a total geek for numbers and stats and I think it's super interesting to consider how long it takes to use things up. And with the current state of the world, I believe it's important to view makeup from an anti/conscious consumerist lens from time to time

It's hard cause with new palettes even if I'm not interested in a palette I'll watch for inspiration using what I have in my very large collection. I think I probably have every color eyeshadow a couple times over so I can watch a video on anything and still be able to "recreate" it. I think that also makes videos with older products not do as well because people don't have to necessarily see a video on the product they're currently using to get inspiration if that makes sense.
@TheEtherny
@TheEtherny Год назад
omg, i do the exact same thing! Also, older videos just were so different. I was doing a lowbuy and decided to watch videos of older palettes I owned to hype myself up to use them, and then I realized old palettes weren't hyped up the way they are now, it's just "so, here's the palette, so pretty, okay let's just use it" and then do a basic ass tutorial, it was cool but it didn't help cause makeup back then was so different from now.

I do want to add that it’s well documented that these algorithms have biases against POC because of the unintentional bias of the people who created them. It’s a well known common issue in machine learning. POC do put things like dark skin, tan skin, etc into their videos and descriptions but and search results still often bury them under white creators who’s videos have more views on the same topic.

So true! I haven't been interested in makeup content for about 6 months now, and the algorithm rarely recommends that content for me now. If I want to see looks with older palettes I search through specific creators first. I don't just blindly search if that makes sense. I like your videos and Annette's and Heather's and so on, so I'll typically search those channels for content on products first. Maybe that's a way to support our favorite people when they use older products 🤔 but I don't think it would still get enough views.

I watch all of your content! I am someone who wants to see looks with the over 100 palettes RU-vidrs have sold me on in the last two years, but you are correct. There is something that keeps me clicking on the new even though I’m not buying it. At this point it’s “oh I know I have a color like that!” Or “I bet I have enough of those colors to create this look.” I would love to see a video where you don’t tell us what the products are. Just say first I’m going to put this dark green in my outer corner. Stuff like that. Because after only 2 years of watching beauty content I am confident that I have most of the colors. If not I’ll have something comparable.

Now a days the majority of the time I’m mainly clicking on videos by creators thag I subscribe to, and when I’m given notifications for. And the reason for that is because I do shuffle around a lot, and RU-vid will think I’m into something but by the time the algorithm figures it out I’m already over that topic and on to the next thing. But by then all RU-vid wants to show me is things from that topic. And that’s not even with “new makeup”. It’s whole entire topics that I shift from. Basically the algorithm doesn’t understand me very well. Or it’s just slow to catch on.

Angie, I think you are definitely onto something! I say this because in the past and even now I enjoy watching older content of the creators I feel some kind of a connection to. So when I get on a kick to go back and binge on some older videos, my feed suddenly has tons of older videos suggested to me! I don’t always want to watch the “New New” when I want inspiration for looks with some of my older palettes , I seek out videos showing looks with whatever palette I am wanting to use! Now , that being said , I usually seek out the videos from creators I watch on the regular. I rarely just look for videos because someone is using a certain palette . Though that isn’t always the case and I have found creators I previously didn’t watch and because I enjoyed the video, I began watching their newer content ! So, I personally like watching older tutorials and like watching the newer content too! My feeds are pretty much full of both most of the time. I also wanted to mention that there are creators (you being one of those) that I will pretty much watch just about anything they put out ! This is because I really love what they are doing and I really enjoy their personalities! And because I find them refreshing , funny, or for a thousand other reasons . But I am never disappointed by the content they are sharing. LOL or maybe I’m just easily entertained.

Speaking only for myself when I buy makeup for the most part like 95% it is considered “ old” I can’t buy things on release I don’t set my alarm on launch day it’s always much later that I get to buy it , and many times I don’t get to own it because it sold out and was limited edition or I’m waiting a long time for it to come back in stock . I got extremely lucky that I was able to get your Hella palette and that’s because the last restock was huge and I’d be over the moon if the Brands I loved did restocks that big on their Collab palettes but I know that’s not going to be case unfortunately , with the cost of just trying to live having doubled and in some areas tripled my purchases have seriously dropped and I didn’t buy much to begin with I’d save money to buy 3 or 4 things at once then start the cycle again. I don’t think I’ve ever bought something new when it was “ new” I get overwhelmed just watching your weekly videos on all the new stuff launching I couldn’t imagine my job being tied to it I can definitely understand your stress , the stress of feeling that if you don’t get it to review it your add sense is affected which is your paycheck and in your job money has to spent in order to be earned in one form or another. Your job isn’t physically hard but it has to mentally stressful and draining always thinking of new ideas and the eye strain from sitting in front of a computer editing, then worrying over views because nothing about this job is secure in knowing how much your cheque is going to be not like “ normal “ jobs where you know every payday because the hrs stay roughly the same. Everybody’s job carries stress in one form or another some way more than others but regardless it’s there , it’s knowing how to try and make the best out of whatever it is you do that matters . I hope everyone that reads this has a wonderful day do.

Or if you get videos recommended you're not interested in you can and should actively tell RU-vid that you're not interested in that video and at some point YT will stop. Train RU-vid.

To be clear- the algorithm isn't based on what an individual likes but on what a group of similar people like. My other thought was that if I watch a review of new makeup from you Angie 99 times out of 100 it is NOT because I am interested in that new makeup, BUT because I love seeing you create new looks. So then the algorithm isn't going to make that distinction, and the hamster wheel is perpetuated. How can creators parse the nuances of what people actually click on certain videos for? This might be impossible. Comments give some clues, but it's still a gamble. Especially when it is one's living and not purely for fun or personal interest.

As a low-income student, currently, panning helps fight the FOMO. I'm not being forced to use it, I am playing to see if I can re-create new palettes with my current items. I'm also a bit of a data nerd so counting uses/ doing the math to determine the value of that product is super interesting to me. 😅

As someone who creates makeup videos, I agree with this! And on the flip side I have been focusing on "older makeup" recently on my channel and not reviewing new things (finding out you're pregnant will def shift your perspective and spending habits lolol) and I've noticed a slow down in growth and views on my channel the last two months or so since I'm not reviewing anything new. Even video types that a few months ago would get me quite a few views (i.e. empties or Sephora sale recs) are getting less cuz I assume my channel is being shown to less people. It's a little bit of a bummer and I'm trying to not let it discourage me!

This is exactly why I have two different RU-vid accounts. This one I'm commenting on now is PURELY for makeup and beauty content. That's all I want here. And because I started watching a beauty creator who mixes movie reviews with makeup, I started getting a lot of reaction video type of recommendations, so I had to essentially keep subscribed to her but delete my watch history from her vids and then the recommended reaction videos that I was genuinely interested in, I copied the URL and would watch them on my other YT account instead (the one for non-beauty). And then the algorithm got back on track with purely traditional beauty content. Any new recommended beauty creators, I typically open their video in a new private browser so I can decide first how I feel about their content before I decide to let YT know they were right. lol. It might seem excessive, but curating my feeds (not just on YT but on IG as well) makes for a way more positive experience and I'm happy with the kind of content I get recommended by using the algorithm to my advantage as a viewer. Edit: Oh and when it comes to looking for older products, I always sort my results by upload date so I can get the most recent videos rather than the most popular ones at the height of the release.

It's funny because I have found a lot of new channels lately doing throw back videos and project panning and tutorials. I also look for old palettes I have and dig for tuturials for inspiration and not from top creators,I scroll and click on new people or someone random. I just mix it up and watch the new new, and panning or pairimg palettes, themed tutorials . Haha, and I always watch you just because I enjoy your content even if I don't care about the particular product. Love this look !!

Angie you are telling the whole truth!!! I’ve been using a lot of my older eyeshadow palette’s the last couple month’s. Now when I get on RU-vid, all of you and Heather’s older video’s pop up. I think you and Heather’s channels pop up because I watch you both more than any other RU-vidrs. I just did a look yesterday using the Gramlite (Icee) eyeshadow palette’s. So because I’ve been using my older eyeshadow palette’s, I’ve been looking up the palette’s but I also type in you and Heather’s name. Thank God you both have video’s using all the older palette’s I’ve been using lately. I would either recreate one of y’all looks and I definitely get inspiration from watching both of y’all RU-vid channel’s!! 💖💕

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying about the algorithm, but at the same time, RU-vid is constantly suggesting videos to me that I simply have NO interest in. Not because I click on videos like those (in fact, I often make the effort to indicate “not interested”), but maybe because so many other people who enjoy the videos that I DO like frequently click on the video topics I don’t want to see, and that’s what messes up the results for me. It’s definitely an imperfect system. As a side note, you might be missing out on content you enjoy by completely discounting project panning. I totally get not wanting to watch people force themselves to use products until they hit pan. (That’s not my cup of tea either.) But I’ve found several beauty creators here who have a very different take on panning. It has nothing to do with using up product. Instead, it focuses on testing products over a certain amount of time and then giving particularly insightful reviews or conducting slow, thoughtful declutters. These creators are often using “older” makeup in these projects. And it really fosters a spirit of appreciation and gratitude. It has certainly inspired me to enjoy the makeup I already have a lot more. I only mention this because you’re looking for more creative beauty content, and there are a couple of real gems hiding under the project pan rock - even for those of us not typically interested in panning. 😉

oh I should have added in the video: the algorithm will also suggest videos that are watched by people that watch the same channels/videos as you, like a "others are interested in this too, so might you". but keep clicking not interested, that's how I taught YT that I dont wanna watch drama hehe :P

While I totally get your frustration, Angie, I gotta admit I truly am the most interested in the newness. I'm a makeup artist with an evergrowing collection, as I'm very passionate about makeup products and I borderline collect them, and of course the thing that excites me the most is seeing all the new launches get reviewed so I can gen an idea of which of them I'm going to purchase next. I very rarely, if ever, click on videos with old products, as I've already seen enough of those at the time of their release. So while I empathize with creators struggling to keep up, I have to admit that it is indeed what most of us want to see..

If I click on a video, I'll get all of that person's content for the past 3 years non-stop as my next video to play. Which sometimes is fine, but I'd rather watch a variety. Samantha March said she may be quitting youtube, and it's really sad that we've gone down this road. I've also seen other creators ask for people to just watch their videos in the background w/o the sound on to try to help them. (and I have because I like their content in general, just not all of their videos.) Anyway, I enjoy almost everything you post because you're funny, you're honest and you like colorful things. Some days though I just can't watch anything make-up related so I skip those days.

I didn't realise when I searched for older palettes that they were shown in order of views or likes. I wondered why I have to scroll through loads of videos to find any by creators I watch! I had assumed initially it would show the videos from who I was subscribed to first and quickly realised it didn't, at least now I know why. Next time I'll add the creator name to my search to save masses of scrolling! I tried watching project pan videos and only these 3 palettes for the month type of videos. I have a pretty big collection and I prefer to go with what I feel on the day, and not put constraints on myself.

I recently went thru my Subscriptions List to refamiliarize myself with it & prune it down. I did delete some channels but it was mainly because they hadn't uploaded in over X amount of years. I was pleasantly surprised to find out Beauty Content was actually a small percentage of My List. Art/Artists & History/Science content makes up the largest percentage, with Pop Culture/Entertainment & Beauty making up the smallest percentage. Lately my recommendeds have skewed heavily towards Art/Artists. There are many people that I like doing Beauty Content but after awhile seeing multiple people talking about the same trends/products just gets repetitive & dull. As for panning, the only products I use up completely are my base skincare & makeup products. Moisturizers, cleansers, mascara, concealer, foundation, brow products all get used up & replaced by same. Color cosmetics is where I rotate. I have plenty of eyeshadow & blush & lip products to not get bored or ever pan before it expires. That's why I no longer buy the newest things unless I am replacing/upgrading what I have already. Pretty sure we all have enough makeup at this point... RU-vid isn't TikTok. Be assertive in teaching the algorithm what to recommend to you. Use the Search function to broaden your consumption. It responds to what you watch.

Great video, thanks :)

While overall the algorithm is curated by the individual, the recommendations are definitely curated by the community. In 2020 I was recommended the channel "Cracking the Cryptic" which is mostly number puzzle/sudoku content. I had never told RU-vid I liked puzzles in any way, but James Charles shouted out the video around the same time. I never saw his shout out and have never subbed to JC, but RU-vid saw a lot of cross over in makeup content and this specific channel's puzzle content and suggested it to me. It's funny how things go with algorithms.

I agree that we are making the algorithm do what it does, so that’s a good point. (I haven’t seen the whole video yet as I comment) But I was thinking about a problem I have with RU-vid’s algorithm, and that is the way a like and a dislike both promotes videos, so we end up with extremes in both directions. Of course extremes are interesting, but I would like it more if dislikes negativity affected a video. (I’m now talking about the whole RU-vid world more than makeup RU-vid) And I’ve been thinking about a more nuanced topic also: what if I for example loved goth makeup a lot, but a channel I was watching had more mainstream makeup tutorials and reviews that appealed to many more of the viewers, then maybe the RU-vidr would look at the numbers and logically stop the goth looks and only focus on the popular videos. I don’t know if that would always be the result, but I’m concerned that videos will be more and more similar and minority interests will not be prioritised, because why would they. I would be interested to hear your thoughts on all of this, because you know a lot more about all this than I do. It’s an interesting discussion:)

I do a lot of content using older palettes because I don't like to continually buy new stuff since it will go to waste (and I dont have the room). I love reimagining palettes and creating new ideas on how to use stuff I already have. My favorite content to create are videos with makeup challenges where I push myself to try something new that pushes my boundaries. I also adore old-school beauty tutorials from 2010-2012... As a creator, I'm certain that some of these videos are not conducive to reaching new viewers and being algorithm-friendly...that is, unless I use a palette that is still riding the popularity wave (like the Blueberry Muffin palette by BH). Haha. Growth hasn't been my 100% focus here on YT, but enjoying my makeup and having fun with it is what my focus is. I'd like to think I'm inspiring others to do the same. :-)
