There's actually a "not interested" button in the drop down menu with every menu. I've been utilizing it for creators and videos that I don't want to watch.
unfortunately it doesn't always work. I've very purposefully blocked Niko.cado and recently he was in my suggested videos! I clicked onto the page to make sure he was marked 'blocked' and yet there he was 😭 I've also told RU-vid to not recommend him to me.
I love watching your videos. Your style of makeup is much more colorful than mine, but I like to live vicariously through you with color. Heather uploaded unpopular opinions recently and she made a excellent point. Channels who moved to baby/toddler and kid things she unsubscribed from. That’s not the life I am living now anymore so I did the same. I felt bad about that but I am past that stage as a person in my late 40s. It was a tag video. She said what I was thinking as a person with one child NOT a baby. Heathers situation is lateral to mine basically. I also don’t watch YT shorts here. Honestly because they are best on IG and TT for me. Why is YT pushing shorts here? I can’t understand why it’s “required”?
RU-vid wants to compete and I totally get that, they do pay better than the other platforms so why not. But I wish they would separate the two in the subscription feed :)

Agreed! I noticed I was doing the same when she said that. I’m even a mom with a toddler but I just don’t want to see mommy content and especially hate it when people turn their entire channel into a family channel after they have a baby like … no. Just no 😂
In regards to gatekeeping gaming, your ability to see something flawed and then change it in yourself is one of the reasons I continue to watch and enjoy your channel. It's OK if we make mistakes; it's not OK if we don't grow from these mistakes. Love you and your honesty!
I do get frustrated when some RU-vidrs I'm subscribed to complain a lot about not getting the views and blaming it all on the algorithm. Though I'm a huge fan of some of these channels, there are some things I think they could improve and some of their videos are really repetitive and even I am not interested. As you said, it's about taking some accountability and adapting.
'FORCE FEEDING THE ALGORITHM FOR POC CREATORS' YES! I made this connection a few years back, purposely seeking out poc creators (using search and only selecting them) across my platforms. IN FACT, back when Facebook showed you your demographics it guessed for you based on your likes, it listed me (white/Caucasian) as black/African american... cause for some reason their the only ones interested in black creators and stuff??? It's bad. I'm still working on getting more POC creators on my RU-vid suggestions
I started doing this just as an exercise to force the algorythm, and then I was like... wait. This content is also better. 😂 Now many of my favourite content creators are people of colour and my feed looks totally different.
Someone sent me a link that shows the demographic categories that Facebook assumes you belong to based on your clicks, and my intentional bias toward PoC and black creators/black non-men specifically as well as my interest in all kinds of people’s content that are PoC and ofc my home people, Tamil and other S Asian communities, means that Facebook & Instagram thinks I’m a black woman, a democrat, and much more- but it’s just telling about what the patterns of most viewers and human beings have and their biases that get written into these programs and algorithms. I thought it was very interesting.

I search for eyeshadow declutter videos. I watch (listen to) them to go to sleep. When I get a recommendation for one, I save it to ‘watch later’ for that evening. The best part is that I’ve found creators I like and have subscribed to and watch all their content. When I subscribe to a channel, I watch all of their uploads. I found this video very clarifying …. And of course the makeup is stunning 💛💛💛🥰
Very interesting discussion. What I think is most problematic about the algorithm is that it creates an echo chamber and shows you suggestions that can make it seem like certain opinions are more prevalent or not show diversity of opinion. For me I have to always remember that this is not a platform to get a rounded view of the world. In essence it reinforces division and polarity. But for makeup videos I am now at a stage that I rarely get suggested what or who I don't want to watch. So that at least is working for me.
As "smart" as an algorithm is, it always learns from humans. Until we solve the diversity issues in the real world, they'll show up in our online spaces. This doesn't mean that you can't teach the algorithm to show you different content. In fact I recommend it!
Thank you for Clarifying about not clicking on a video we dont want to watch! There are some channels I’ve enjoyed, and their channels slowly change and so I less watch of their videos because it’s stuff I’m not interested in. Then they finally do a video I am interested in, only to hear them complain about their views being down and they make me feel like it’s my fault for not watching, or they blame RU-vid. But, maybe it’s them. Anyways, I’m glad you don’t seem to complain if things don’t go your way, that you don’t blame everyone else for your struggles (I do t even know if you have struggles because you do such a good job). The creators who complain about everything, I start not getting excited to watch their videos.
The hair. The eyeshadow. They are giving me life!!! With regard to clicking on videos that are suggested to me personally, I am always nervous to try out a new personality. I keep coming back to the same creators bc I love their personalities (like yours!) and I feel very invested as a viewer. I get advertised the new, hot makeup being reviewed by numerous creators, but at the end of the day, I want to watch the creators I know and love! I love the chatty videos and videos that inspire us to be creative with makeup in general, rather than always chasing the new products. 💜💜💜
I haven't watched the video yet, but I'm gonna weigh in. I watch certain people because I like those people. Like you, Hannah and Khaki (?), I'll watch no matter what. Same for Kathleen even though that woman never uploads 🙃. Of course I'll click on new makeup videos because I love makeup, but the creator is the biggest factor! I think people that are honestly themselves play a big part in it.
It's Kackie. But yeah I feel the same way. I will click in makeup videos if people I don't know if I get recommended one to see if I vibe with them. But most often I click because of the person and content is a 2nd consideration.

You are such an inspiration for me - not just for your love of makeup and colourful looks, but even more so for you personality and your drive to always be fair and objective about all things. Please never change your channel or anything about yourself. I would never have the confidence to wear colorful makeup - BUT your content brings me back day after day. Hi Angelica, I love discussions about RU-vid as an “entity”. I am wondering about the fact that you get 8M impressions per months and don’t have 8M views. I mean the algorithm doesn’t always get it right, like showing you travel vlogs when you were only interested in that one city. The question is “how often do they get it wrong?”. 50% of the time or 98% of the time…

There’s a “couple” of RU-vidrs I used to follow and absolutely loved but had to unfollow when I realized I hadn’t watched a single video of them (some of them) IN YEARS!!! Although they upload quite regularly I can’t watch their videos simply because they make me feel bad, wrong, you name it. They were making me feel not enough, envious of their “perfect lives” and I realized there was literally nothing on their content that made me feel like entertained or inspired. Instead of feeling fired up by them I was feeling dragged down. Obviously I’m not going to name them but were all beauty/makeup channels that became “I got married everything is about my husband now “ or “I’ve done WeightLoss surgery so now all my content will be about diets/ fitness”. So definitely some creators are for sure loosing subscribers simply because their content doesn’t appeal anymore.
Thankyou for your ongoing amazing content and the amount of it that you put up you work so hard on this channel and it shows in the quality that you manage to put out video after video you never get lazy with it you always make it interesting and the looks you come up with always look incredible you should be really proud of yourself for where you have gotten I hope this new style of videos you are trialing are less stressful for you and that you're still getting the steady stream of viewers that you have been getting hope your little family are all doing ok
I also notice that creators I used to watch all their videos have changed their content because they're bored and I'm not interested in the new content they're creating and they blame the algorithm. If I followed you because you're a beauty channel and suddenly you decide to become a cooking channel I'm not going to watch, I know how to cook but I'm not good with my makeup

I loved your previous video! Until I watched it, I never even realized there was a filter option in the search feature. Now I’m finding new videos on older palettes and seeing content I want. These types of videos are being suggested to me by the algorithm now, too!
One thing I’ve noticed with the TikTok algorithm is that it fails to understand that I have many interests. I can appreciate a well choreographed dance, but I also watch a lot of mental health videos, and now I never get dances in my feed, which is unfortunate
I get around my 10% of views so maybe I’m not doing so bad as I thought 🙈. Honestly my regulars still watch & so I’m doing it for them & as a hobby for me. Maybe creators need to figure out what success looks like for them. I love your videos like this! Always so thought provoking 💖
As with most things, I generally fall into the camp of "both/and" when it comes to how the algorithm works. Viewer behavior is part of it and creator behavior is part of it. I'm a teeny tiny channel, so YT clearly doesn't care much about what I'm up to, but at one point I was starting to see some growth on my channel that I was really excited about. I was routinely getting at or above my number of subscribers for views (don't get excited - I mean a REALLY TINY CHANNEL! lol) and looking at the analytics, I saw that YT was starting to drive some traffic from end screen recommendations and I was starting to get some views and occasional new subscribers from that. I thought, "Great! I should record a channel intro video to tell people what I'm all about when they visit!" So I recorded what I thought was a very cute 3.5 minute intro and posted it to my channel page. After that, my views TANKED. It's hard to know exactly what the algorithm values, but one I hear over and over is consistency. I typically make videos in the 20-30 minute range, and here I go putting out a super short video. Obviously, there are still questions about whether or not the content is what people want, but I can see in the backend that I'm not really getting those end screen spots any more after I released that short intro video. Looking back at it now with more experience, I would have put it up as unlisted and then added it to the channel preview spot on my page, but I didn't know any better (and I thought it had turned out well). It's frustrating because newer, smaller creators already have a challenge trying to get any views, so seeing a little bit of growth and then having it completely change based on one upload can make you feel hopeless.
Honestly you and Theresa is Dead, are the only 2 beauty channels that I view these days😂 and I’m subscribed to a lot of channels… somethings I get bored with beauty RU-vidrs that I used to love, and I don’t know why 😂
I’m glad you expanded on this, because you’re definitely making some great points. Personally I think you should be as blunt as you want. It’s what I love about you! I’m the same way and it gets me in trouble sometimes too 😂 but I think you’re true to yourself, you have some very cool opinions that are always informative, you’re relatable and that’s how in just a couple months you’ve become my most watched RU-vidr. Also, glad you pointed out how it’s not our job to save a channel that’s dying due to their own refusal to change! I keep noticing a certain beautytubers videos dropping in subs and views and I like her so I felt bad but you’re right. It’s not always the algorithm, sometimes it is on the creator! Happy that you’re always willing to give us great content no matter what. ❤❤

There’s other beauty channels that started focusing more on other things and less on the beauty then wonder why their channel isn’t doing as well. Chatting isn’t the issue it’s the topics and talking about the same subject a million times over gets annoying tbh. Then they blame the algorithm and YT for losing subscribers so they decide they’re going to quit. Nope that’s all you’re own doings. It’s sad because I loved their channel. Glad you brought this subject up.
Soooo interesting to watch every single time! All these elements go to the same idea : you gotta question yourself for your own success or failure. There is so much too see with marketing also, it'¥ crazy! Working in the communication and marketing field I have to work on all of these questions (thumbnail, added value in the vid, relevance on the market, newness...). It is so impressive how much content creators need to be polyvalent and creative. And then people say it's an easy job 😂 No dear, it's just a job that requires passion, and when people have their passion for work they're grateful and don't complain much.
I think as long as one loves what they do... like myself youtube has been mostly a hobby than anything else. I have sadly watched my analytics drop to half of what I'm used to. I'm ok with this as it's not my job. 🤷♀️

The algorithm is great when I want to binge a certain type of content without subscribing. There will be seasonal gaming recommendation videos and I don’t follow any gaming creators but I’ll click on those and then get more recommendations from the algorithm and it will be helpful because I want a wishlist or to stay informed on what’s new. Another one is I do follow a lot of booktubers but I love watching peoples TBR videos for a readathon from other people participating. It helps me see the content of the whole community participating without having to follow all the time. Because sometimes creators make some videos that you’re interested in but it’s not the bulk of what they are posting.
I love RU-vid. Everyone says RU-vid is dead. I don't agree. RU-vid is different. For channels I watch it's because of the content and/or the person. There are channels that I am subscribed too that I may not watch all the time because I am not interested in what they are putting out and there's channels that I watch all the time either for the content or just because I enjoy watching them! Some channels that were more makeup/beauty and sub boxes, etc, that now are becoming more family channels or vlog types, I'm not a fan of. I have unsubscribed to several channels that have just taken a new path that I am not interested in. I find that RU-vid, for the most part, has recommended relevant videos and channels to me.
Omg yes the thumbnails. My pet peeve in YTmakeup thumbnails are 3 looks one palette, with the 3 looks already showing on the thumbnail (and they are very boring looks), and then its titled 3 looks one palette. Like... come on. If the looks are amazing id click to know the wizardy it took to get there, but if they are not i already got what you are offering in the picture.
I love watching your videos, love your sense of humour, your candidnes and opinions. By the time.i educate the YT algorithm about what I want to see, I don't want to see it any longer, so it always seems to catch up too slowly for me, it seems. I also don't want to watch as many videos or don't really watch the same content like I used to. And probably don't know what sort of content I want to watch now. I was definitely "not like the other girls" and I was ashamed when I realized how flawed it was. But when I started watching your channel your statement that it's alright to make mistakes as long as you can improve and outgrow them made me feel so much better. And not only about "not like other girls" but for other things in my life. I completely agree with everything you said with respect to videos, but I do personally think RU-vids shorts algorithm is very broken. I'll get recommended a short on my home page that I'm interested in and watch it, but when I swipe to the next one not on my page it'll randomly be a misogynistic, anti trans, anti choice, super religious etc short that is as far from my viewing activity on RU-vid that anything could possibly be 😑 one of the big reasons I've stopped watching most shorts on here cause I don't trust YT to not show me something offensive that I don't want to see.
Love the video series. I have to tell ya something. I purchased the Merry Christmas palette from Oden’s Eye, and it’s amazing. BUT the clear winner for me was their highlighter brush. I bought all of the brushes (4) because they were new and inexpensive, and HOLY COW. They’re amazing! You need to try them.

I think I’m part of the few that still enjoy makeup content a lot. I find it therapeutic. I do my best to watch as many makeup videos as possible but it still saddens me that the beauty contents are decreasing. Yes I know it’s not the creators’ fault
I think people are just over makeup in general 🤔 people are caring more about low key easy fast looks. We want skin care and hair care. Most of us have aged a bit and the colorful over the top makeup is no longer what the masses want. I personally love color and makeup ESPECIALLY GRWM! I'm looking 👀 for makeup that doesn't look like makeup less is more these days. Although this could change next season... 🤣🤣🤣
Maybe that's the masses, but there's still alot of us who still very much love color and lots of makeup. I turn 38 in a few days and I'm all about a full face and color, although not as much color as Angie but I am in no way a neutral woman. Also shimmers, you can pry them and CP super shock shadows out of my cold dead hands 😆

I’m very guilty of being bored and just clicking on videos that were recommended to me regardless if it’s something I’m super interested in or not. I definitely need to work on searching for new things for sure
Just a note on impressions vs views - sometimes with beauty content I don't want to see a palette reviewed by 10 different creators because the first 2 or 3 reviews were enough. But sometimes I want to see a lot of looks and I watch all 10. So it's not always a "hell no" reaction that an impression doesn't turn into a view. Sometimes there's just more interesting videos in my feed.
The reason I stopped watching makeup is everyone does the SAME LOOKS. Glowy skin, sharp eyeliner, warn brown eyeshadow, overly bronzed AND OVERLY BLUSHED. Natural skin is fine, but no one does anything too different. Every pallet, warn neutral look. And I don't like glowy skin because it looks so greasy by end of day. In photo, on videos sure it looks impressive. But anyone i see in real life who do those trends have to blot all day, add powder, and I don't want to fuss with that. So I stopped watching a LOT of people. I LOVE that you play with color, and it makes me so happy and inspired to play myself. That's what I miss about the beauty community most. Getting inspired.
I follow beauty, art, and a little bit of fashion content. I usually get recommended videos that are pretty aligned with my interests. I did have an interesting couple of weeks where I was getting recommend lesbian thirst traps and lesbian music videos. I’m an LGTBQIA+ ally but straight myself and have no idea what I watched that lead The RU-vid algorithm to think I wanted all the lesbian content. That said, I discovered some bangers and I’m always open to learning about groups I am not a part of so cool.
I feel like I personally am shown a good chunk of those 8M/mo impressions. There's no way that's even close to representing the number of people RU-vid puts your content in front of. The algorithm sucks in more ways than racism. After every New Makeup Releases, the recommended panel is all past versions of the Friday upload (or from when it was Sunday). It often auto plays to the previous week. I know on some level that's because I'll listen to stuff like that as background noise or to fall asleep, but don't beat yourself up because millions of viewers are choosing to not click; I truly don't think that's the big picture.
I love the level of color and all this purple! Colourpop keeps pulling me in with more of their stuff… I think the look is refined and gorgeous, but my 3yo also went “oooh, pretty princess” so 🤷♀️
I work for a bead store that started as a business selling at Native American powwows (a combination ceremony/gathering/fair for those unfamiliar) and still has a large following of shoppers from there. So, I started following some native American beader friends and have been consistently liking content from them on Instagram. Definitely something I looked for and intentionally started following. From there I started getting content about missing and murdered indigenous women, orange shirt day (reference to Canadian residential schools that native children were forcibly taken to in both the US and Canada) and other political things affecting the native American community. Yes, definitely what you click influences what you see.
Mar is a huge Latin creator. She has lik 15 million on her Spanish channel. I think she plays the same games a Sniperwolf. She also has a mobile puzzle ish game with her dog as the main character.
I wonder if because my tastes are so wide and variable that I don't get too much weird shit I don't like? So I watch you and a handful of other small makeup creators, then a couple of just society commentators and reaction channels, then a few critics of like TV, movie, books, then a whole heap of PBS channels, science, astronomy, physics etc, oh and a mortician that advocates for good deaths and funerals, so many things. Oh and a couple of Chinese cooks in the mountains. Amazing
I couldn’t agree with you more! I have “forced” both algorithms to give me what I want. IG is funny, you will watch one video and then end up with hundreds of stuff you don’t want to watch more then watch. On YT, I will specifically click on not interested if they keep showing content I’m not interested in. I won’t watch anything I’m not interested in. FYI I love the the fact your blunt, carry on❤️

I honestly can't remember I think honestly I was just looking for someone new to watch and I saw your thumbnails a couple times and then one day I clicked on it because at that time I was looking for someone new and I can say I was intrigued by you using color instead of most the people I watched was only doing regular neutral looks. But is there a way I can see the 1st one cause I remember why I did it but I don't remember which one it was. Lol
I related to what you said about sometimes coming off as a B because of how we say things , I’ve watched and loved you for so many yrs at this point but yea I could choose better ways to get across how something made me personally feel. I’m having a hard time finding more channels I’m getting recommended things that make me go WTF lol I watch the same 5 ppl and end up watching the playlists over and over because I can’t find new Creators that I click with.
When you mentioned teaching the Instagram algorithm the diversity that you want to see, it put me in mind of BIPOC creators who taught me similar. A group of creators on TikTok taught me that if I see a video or content from a BIPOC creator that I find even remotely interesting to follow or subscribe to them immediately, instead of just hitting like. Especially with tiktok, it's been found that if you just hit like on content from a BIPOC creator the algorithm did not adapt to show more of that creator. Which is different from what the algorithm does if I like content from a white or paler skinned creator. It is a way in which algorithms show the biases of those who built them. It also shows those who were left out of the conversation when these algorithms were being built.
And if I had continued the video for 30 more seconds before commenting, this comment wouldn't have been needed as you addressed the machine learning biases.
You're the right amount of blunt. The 2000s is the era of sparing feelings and making victims. Tell the truth - people are better for hearing the truth.
I agree with your comments. I’m in the minority of people who still enjoys makeup videos, so when someone who used to upload makeup videos uploads a video on something else that is not of interest to me, I don’t watch it. The same goes when I see a thumbnail for someone whose videos I do watch but perhaps the makeup brand or look that they created isn’t one that I like. That said, I think I’ve watched every single video that you’ve uploaded in the last 2 years, since I discovered your channel 😂
I really think the creators that survive and thrive because they can evolve with the content people want to watch, but in addition to an unintentional POC and weight bias, people also have an unintentional bias against people without the income to spend on the new new, whether it be books, fashion, makeup, video games, planning, bullet journaling or any other channels with a product bias. It does seem to encourage shopping for new things, whether we generate this ourselves by only click on the new new or the algorithm itself is designed to favor this. RU-vid benefits the privileded creators, and I am not saying that it's intentional. It's just true. I don't think those creators aren't working hard, because often they are working VERY hard, but more money means you can be more liberal with your content creation.
If I was Constantly looking at the stats from YT as a F.T creator that my life depends on , wow, I would become so frozen by anxiety. It would mind f*k me hard. PROPS to everyone who is on this platform and are still Yourself. I find it really fascinating how people can watch the same video but HEAR entirely different things. I watched part 1, and I have no bloody idea where some people got it that you "said" you're perfect etc etc. I fully understood the video and I listened to all the words. I didn't leave annoyed.
We have to think about what’s behind the algorithm: YT is trying to keep people on their platform for as long as possible and to place ads for their customers. Personally, I’ve just never been into random "indie"/black-labeled brands and perfume. Sephora hauls. I’m happily skipping these videos.
Mariale made her own game, but she has a twitch channel where I would guess she plays games. You can find links to her things on the colourpop youtue where she shows her collection. She has a youtube page also. I don't game much now but I'm a gamer at heart, I used to live in an MMO for a long time :). I think her palette is one the prettiest CP has done all year.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this video. Many of your points are very helpful for viewers. I’ve been trying to train the algorithm by only clicking on content that interests me, searching new channels/topics, and unsubscribing from channels that no longer interest me. There are definitely challenges and inequalities with the algorithm, but I find the content I interact with most has the most representation on my explore page :)
I enjoy all your videos, and this one was very helpful to hear more about. My front page has been having a lot of stuff that I’m not interested in, and never been interested in, and I don’t know why. I click not interested, but they keep coming back.
Just my two cents worth 🙂💝 I absolutely love youtube and have it on in the background all day but I dont go searching for videos, I watch my favourite subscriptions old videos 🙂💝
