Yeah I’m glad I grabbed it for my son who is a huge fan when it was like $50. He’s been playing it off and on for years. That price is ridiculous though.
It'll never be the same. In 2013 I could find NES games at Goodwill for $0.99. Since 2018 all I've seen are loose copies of Madden for $4.99. But even as long as ~15 years ago, I remember occasionally seeing stuff at yard sales priced stupidly high. The common theme back then was that people would price things based off of ebay ASKING prices, and not completed sales. But now, you can't even trust completed sales. With fake sales and people relisting items, those prices still appear as valid and affect price tracking websites. There are many different factors influencing price inflation, but I definitely think there is some manipulation going on.
I’m at the point in collecting where I’ve got 99% of what I want. There’s a few bangers here and there that I want to buy but the prices are just so extreme that it’s got me thinking twice. You’re absolutely spot-on about the lack of deals overall and diminishing inventory. I’m also seeing pricy games sitting for months in some of these stores. I don’t know exactly why, but something is up. People aren’t dropping money like that used to, it seems anyway.
When Covid hit,the entire hobby changed. Not just stores but the way product was dealt and far as thrifts go,they almost always rely on ebay and sold listings. Granted some stores arent as expensive, the fact that they are almost equal to ebay defeats purpose of even trying to get something unless dont see it often or gotta have it right away. Keep in mind that most dont ever test the games received, let alone check condition so its a risky gamble
60 dollars for Mario Party 6 ... look, I'm a trash hoarder that collects broken cases, naked discs, or games that have the label destroyed, I acknowledge that, but I can't imagine paying 60 dollars for Mario Party 6 lol
@@thaiboypsp3000 It's definitely worth the value Especially if you're getting the big box version that one is around 100 to 150 ish I wouldn't expect you to understand if you're not a gamecube collector
Cool vid and nice pickups with Batman and Shinobi III, it's hard to go wrong w/classic Sega coolness. I've grabbed some most recently, not flavor of the month or anything, but I've been trying to round my 360 collection for a few years now. I'm going to do sime.out of state game hunting this, so here's hoping I find some cool stuff. If not, I'll just grab some current games I have my eye on.
Great video,I got wild arms2,final fantasy 9 ps1 black label complete at my GameStop last week they are doing more retro now most stores fro what they tell me
It is different for sure. I went back to flee market and it isn't what it was 2020 to 2022. I used to find so many games. I ended up getting two games. But garage sales are where it is at for me. I went 40 to 50 this last week and found some good stuff to turn into games after I sell them. But I only found 2 sales that had games, ps3 and wii. I asked at every sale. Great video.
It's a weird time for collecting without a doubt. I dunno where you live but you're a lucky dude if you're finding old games in your Gamestop. Ours has been opened for like 15 years and they barely get stuff passed the Wii. It's usually just copies of old Pokemon games behind a glass case. Very cool that you have some thrift shops with games as well. That $6 Pikmin was a score.
Mine hasn't got anything before the PS4/Switch, I think there is a dozen or so 3DS games below the Switch display. Then again, the game section is super tiny anyway, it's mostly game related merch now.
Yeah you could pick up anything used for cheap. Pretty much got all the DS Wii classics no probs. Although personally I don't get the appeal, I emulated stuff I have more 😂
This is why I pretty much retired from actively collecting. I'd rather save to buy a bigger house or some other important purchase. It's just not that important to me, and the problem is that it's youtube channels like this and gamecollecting on Reddit that is responsible for the increase in demand.
@@CDbiggen windows pisses me off and sometimes I just wanna turn on my tube TV and play a snes in its original, unstretched resolution. SNES on a tube TV is really special and it has most of my favorite games
Not just that, but this is why I had the foresight and started investing back when I turned 17 12 odd years ago, and fast forward well over a decade later, I am debt free and actively providing financial assistance to family. Equities and precious metals investing back in 2011-12 has allowed me to take profits and reinvest into the varying crypto utility assets like XRP, XDC, QNT, Holochain and the profits I took from those assets 4-5 years ago I then distributed into the Real Estate market and as of 17th of May 2024, I still work, but majority of my wealth derives from passive income I get from my 3 investment properties. Point is, people gotta escape the mentality that video games would always hold value and that the value would somehow be worth the 10-12 year hold which people suddenly believe will explode in price. If people want TRUE value, investing the money is where it is at. Not a financial advisor, but as long as you do your due diligence, anyone can do what I did and become free from financial burden. This is why when there is a super expensive collectors edition that I am interested in, I just weigh up and pros and cons and if the cons outweigh the pros, I’d rather just invest the money into crypto or just throw it into something like Gold or Silver which often retains their value.
I live in Germany and really like your Content and opinions. Yesterday i was at a fleamarket and the only consoles/Games were eBay priced. Very disapointing! Gamestop is also not a good Option here in Germany. In 2023 the last good Deal was Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Steelbook no Slip Cover) for 15€. I used a 5€ discount. We have 2 Thrift Stores in the next big City where i sometimes find good Stuff and Deals. Bought Conan, SSX, Spec Ops the Line and Blades of Time recently for 360/Ps3. Conan is a fun God of War like Game. Underrated in my opinion. Hope you enjoy the NBA Play Offs! Greetings from Germany…👋
The PSP is my favorite console next to the Switch. It was way ahead of its time. So many bangers on the PSP and it has a little of everything for anyone no matter what kind of games you might like. Happy Hunting!
This is definitely an interesting topic. I’m lucky enough to live an area where you can still find deals on some retro stuff. I recently picked up a crt tv for $15.00 from my local goodwill. Had no idea that was a good deal until I checked eBay listings. Also got a ps2 for $30.00. Games are definitely harder get deals on, but if you look around you can usually find a few pawn shops that sell games dirt cheap. Also, my local GameStop’s carry’s some retro stuff which is nice since I can just walk in the store and inspect the games instead of praying all the games are in acceptable condition when I order online.
The second music choice made it a bit hard to hear but thanks for the video as usual. Here in Utah there's only been sports/common ps2 and ps3 games at the yard sales so far this year. I think they're wise
Goodwill prices are ridiculous anymore. And if you want to beat the resellers you have to get in early. GameStop has excellent sales. I’ve been able to get many brand new switch games for up to 50% off. Again you also have to move quick. Usually their sales start on the weekend and stock is wiped out by Sunday evening. But I only collect for switch and I only buy on sale unless it’s a first party Nintendo title.
I was out one day cause I was off from work walking around so I’m going to mom and Pop shop that usually go to the old school video games little bit of everything tech as well and look in the display window and they had a Sega Genesis raspberry pie with over 4000 games on it for $20. It was definitely worth it.
Found ps2 rpgs last week also Valkyrie profile 2,mania Khami 2 ,tales of legendia, xenogears for ps1 and a few others it was quite the flashback seeing ps2 games on there shelf again
You really got shafted bud 😢. I'm lucky to have a large DS and 3DS collection because they were cheap in those years. This is gonna sound like little consolation, but it can all be emulated. Even DS/3DS.
I don't really hunt for games in the wild anymore as you said to many know that retro game are worth money now, so I just save my money and go to 1/2 conventions a year and cherry pick a few games I really want.
2:44 to 2:54 felt like an unintended “Dunkey” clip, with the music drop shortly after mentioning GameStop. It’s a highly-memed company & had some controversies with retro game practices in the past, so it feels like a satire moment 😂
I cannot believe your GameStops have THAT many games in them. Mine have like 12 per console, and no retro. I'm pretty sure mine is gonna stop having any physical games soon, probably on the chopping block for closures honestly. There's no point for me to even go in them anymore, it's so bad.
While yard sales haven't completely dried up. It's few and far between now. Competition is absolutely fierce. If a sale advertises 8AM start you better be waiting at 645AM or earlier. I've noticed competitors also DM every sale listed online asking "do you have video games?" 10 years ago, I had a car full of stuff every Saturday. Now I'm lucky to have 4 or 5 games at most. And as far as Goodwill goes, it sucks. Goodwill thinks they're a retail store or Amazon. It's no longer a thrift shop. I haven't seen a game at Goodwill in many, many months. Pretty sure they send it all to their online store.
They absolutely do. They don't put anything out anymore. Mines been like this for prob 5 years..you'll only find the trashiest of Wii games or Xbox 360 cases.
For yard sales i notoiced even youtubers will just scam old ladies out of what they have in order to flip the stuff. The hobby has just become a greed infested sweat fest of people being so desperate to find either a good deal or something they can flip for profit. I remember watching a canadian youtuber and at first i thought he was cool. Then i went to a swap and saw him flipping most his finds for absurd prices. It totally killed the fun of the hobby for me. I just do very mild collecting now days buying physical modern gamed that i really want to play now, vs before where i would buy up stuff that i wanted to play at somepoint. I never bought doubles to flip. I liked the idea of taking 1 copy and leaving the rest for someone else to find a great deal and have that same feel good moment. You cant have that anymore now days with these people treating the hobby like a competitive sport.
Game hunting in public is always awesome. But lately its hard for me to get out. So ive been ordering a lot from limited print gaming companies. Cant wait to get those. Most of the time you dont see them out in public but maybe at a expo. I always been getting into ordering evercade games. Retro gaming for modern times. Physical games with manual and on cart. Each game has multi games on each cart and they are all fully licensed games. Games that got recently announced for evercade is tomb raider 1-3 and all on one catridge. Its not the remasters but the og ps1 versions. I really feel like resellers are messing it up for a lot if gamers who want to buy them to play them. It really sucks a lot sometimes. They take advantage of a deals a lot and put other people in the dust.
I've been having really good luck with value village but that's about it. Goodwill is horrible now. I still find games but over market value. Sometimes double to triple market price.
Found perfect dark, Tenchu Z, and Diddy Kong Racing at game stop a few days ago and paid $48. My goal this year is to save up and get a working Sega CD Model 1, Dragon force, and knuckles chaotix. My first long time goal of getting a CiB copy of cannon spike was achieved in March. I’m gonna try and flip Tenchu Z to get more money
@@dlzchaos588 Shining Force Cd, sonic cd and a few others dont make it worth it. Get a Rg35xx or Miyoo Mini + and can play them all for the cost of one game.
At the end of the day, its all plastic slowly rotting away on a shelf. If you really want to play this stuff, just download the rom and save it to your backups and keep it digitally forever.
I used to be allways a generation behind with gaming. Saved me a ton of money in the past. But now I skipped PS4 and 3DS...resellers are completely destroying the hobby. (Basically every collecting hobby 💀)
The prices shown in this video is the reason why I would just pirate old video games and play them through emulators there is no way in hell I will paying $60 plus for games that came out a decade ago.
As someone who has been buying games since the 90's, I have witnessed and lived the trends of gaming for many decades now. Luckily a majority of my collection was gathered pre 2018. Aside from my switch collection which has been my main focus the last 5 years and always by new if there is a deal. I feel like a lot of the magic has been lost with hunting and is not like it used to be since everyone and their grandma thinks they are sitting on gold these days. I said years ago when pricecharting first came about that it will be the worst thing to ever happen to retro games and in a way I was correct because prices are out of control now. I do add a to my retro collection here and there in the last year but I didn't buy any retro games during the 2019-2023 time period. In fact I sold off my entire N64 collection, Genesis and Saturn collection in 2022 which ended up being a great time to do so. I never played them and they gained so much value it was time. I will forever keep my NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, NEO GEO Pocket Color and Switch stuff though.
i'm happy i never sold most of my games over the years because i'm seeing games i bought for 99 cents or 5 dollars at gamestop bargain bins for ridic prices now for wii and ps3 games!!? like something has got to give.
Resellers just killed retro game collecting. I got Gamecube games rather cheaply, but after the pandemic the value has risen to insane heights. I just gave up, emulation is going to be the only viable and reasonable way to play old games anymore.
I see it as it is what it is. For decades gamers and game collectors wanted their hobby to be recognized as a legit hobby. And how does a form of entertainment that people are passionate about. In which they invest time, money, and build spme form of career or business around. Get recognized as a legit hobby . It has to have a viable market or secondary market. The products have to have tangible value. Whether its comic books, toys, sports cards, ect. The hobby of collecting becomes viable once the products have market value. Now if your a gamer who likes to game on the cheap. Of course you are going to cry and moan over the rise in value of videogames. Which is the product of your hobby. You got two choices stop being cheap and enjoy your hobby or just quit having gaming as a hobby. Playing and collecting videogames is now officially a viable hobby. Considering that even people at flea markets who are not gamers sell videogames at the mid to high level secondary market price.
I dont collect old games physical. Insane prices. Got a big rom collection wih is totally fine for me. Also with new titles, i got the new games with all updates and dlc in one file and play them on my modded consoles. Just f it.
Bring those prices down and these stores couldn't keep them in stock. Instead they price shit like ebay and they end up going out of business for an extra 20 per game...bring the market prices doooooowwwwnnn.
Really game hunting has been great for me especially in garage sales. Scored some killer DS/3DS stuff for real cheap yesterday and found a bunch more stuff to flip and make $100s on top of keeping the handheld games.
And how much are they paying you to say that? Here in NC, no retro stuff at all and I have ordered three times online. All coming out of the Grapevine, TX warehouse. Melee' wouldn't read. Brawl wouldn't read and Double Dash wouldn't read. Heck Double Dash still had the polishing chemicals on it without a case. All the fake cases they got they wouldn't spare one. Never going there again.
Collecting for The Switch is a waste of money. Games never go down in price and all the shovel ware and third party titles are better off played on other consoles.
I still get physicals even for my favorite artists like sanguisugabogg. and im 27 but the reason i dont feel like you is bc dont over do it and i never did. I dont even have a ps2 and i would love to get one soon. My brother has one but it isnt something i want bad. I do want to play fallout 1 on my mac but idk how to. I just think some people have too much in their collection.
