In this episode of our off grid cabin build series we are lifting the first long exterior wall of our off grid cabin. This is the first 40-foot wall our family has ever lifted. We've lifted a 20-foot wall but never a 40-foot wall. Can we do it?

A tip for the next guy. Lay out all of your walls. The top plates lock the intersection of walls together. There is a need for extra studs at this intersection for sheetrock backing. Typically the top plates will not break within 4 feet of each other. That gives the wall strength pushing in and out. Second is hold down straps. The mud sill is anchored to the foundation. Typically straps are embedded on the outside or wrapped around the sill. A strap at each corner then at 6 foot intervals. This can change in your region. But the method is the same. Strap from foundation to rafter along an individual and continuous stud. Usually on the outside of the framing and before the sheathing. If engineered using the sheathing is ok usually by adding blocking and using 2 1/2" ring shank nails. But where the sheets stop a strap is needed. See the Simpson Hangars guide. Use 11/2" hangar nails, don't just make stuff up, use what they tell you. A special nail gun is made by Bostitch and we'll worth it.

Great video. Love the family team work. As a professional framer I find it interesting the way that you accomplished your tasks. The ratchet strap was a good idea. I also noticed it looks like you made sure to nail your walls down through the subfloor into the rim joist and not just into the plywood. A seemingly small detail that I believe most rookies would have overlooked. Cudos

I have funny story...In the late ’50s I was working construction, leveling the corner of a house that we had jacked about 4 inches above the ground. One of the jacks slipped and the house came down with a loud bang. The next thing we knew,
the owner, who was a minister, ran out and looked up at the
sky. “I thought the Lord was coming!” he told us. We all had a good laugh. 😊 ...I'm so excited to see the next video.. love family jhonson

HI I happy to see you and you family having a great time building you home together. I wanted to remind you that any interior walls the are attached to the outside walls. The top plate of the interior wall has to lap over on top of the exterior wall to tie it all together. You can cut out the outside top plate to make this happen. Keep having fun..

At each corner place a wood block (1 1/2 inch - flat 2x4). Stretch a string line around the building at the top plates over the blocks. Using a scrap 2x4 check the length of each wall for straightness by sliding the block between the string and the osb on the wall. Tip walls in or out and brace for trusses.

Marty please nail the studs that make the corner of the two walls together. Maybe the video didn’t show you doing that. Pro tip is the outside of your 40’ wall corner should be even with the edge of the 24’ wall. You squared the 24’ walls and plumbed them so the long wall is just smooth. When you go to sheath the wall use some nails as dead men at the bottom to hold the sheath while you position and nail it off. If Idaho was in my back yard I would be there offering help. Always excited to see your progress!

VERY Glad to see those boxed headers. later, you can drill a few holes in the top and foam their insides. Don't forget to fix the side wall headers - they are not strong! Sheathing will be easier if you mark your foundation to the level that the sheathing will hang over and mark that line. cut two pieces of 2x4s and nail one atop of the other, then cut the one end at 45 degrees, then cut the bottom flat and long enough to lean against the foundation wall. Place the first sheet on top of the 2x4s while someone places a clamp to hold it in place. then make your adjustments and nail away. I've also used a 2by laid on the top plate, with a 2by running straight down with a horizonal holder at the bottom. one lifts the sheathing, one slides the new tool in place and the sheathing is held by the bottom holder. Once you have all the walls up, you might what to check the measurements from the edge of one top plate to another. Tell us what you are doing for the roofing structure, roofing material, etc. Also curious if you are going with a well or rain water.

when you get your trusses , the bottom cord (ceiling joist part) will be exactly the same length from one side of the house to the other ( because truss builders are amazing ). just make sure that the positioning of the truss on the top plate is the same on both sides of the house. i.e. truss ends flush with the plate , or 1/2 " in from the plate , or 1/2" outside the plate etc . that way you know your walls will be straight along the 40' length , AND they will be plumb !! since your chalkline layout on the floor is also straight , doing that will save you putting 30 INTERIOR braces along the length of the long walls to make sure they are plumb. those interior braces will only get in the way of building your interior walls the other thing you can do to get the same result , is to pull a dry string line ( no chalk ) from one end of the 40' wall to the other, on the OUTSIDE of the top plate , place a 1/2" block UNDER the string at both ends to keep the string 1/2" off the edge of the plate , and use interior braces to brace the wall so that the whole 40' wall is 1/2" off the string line the wall . when the trusses are up and bridged ( the truss plan shows where you need to put cross bridging inside the roof to keep the truss roof from racking ) your 40' walls should be plumb all the way down their 40' length

Martin Johnson - Off Grid Living In Washington State the builders have framing, nailing and insulation inspections along with a list of others. Most small headers are framed with two 2x10’s glued and nailed together, larger opening are three 2x10’s glued and nailed together. Any thing larger is done with LVL’s or beams. If you don’t have engineered plans it would be best to speak to the building inspector NOW. Correcting problems after the fact is time consuming and expensive. Where I see opportunities for corrections are nail spacing, headers and double top plates must overlap your interior walls. Hope this helps!
