Animal testing is largely disfavored globally, but the world is struggling to find alternatives. Dr. Charu Chandrasekera’s research has proven that there is not only a viable replacement, but one that is cheaper, faster, and more relevant to humans.
Dr. Charu Chandrasekera is the founding executive director of Canada’s first and only research centre dedicated exclusively to alternatives to animal testing-Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods (CCAAM) and its subsidiary, the Canadian Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (CaCVAM)-officially launched at the University of Windsor in October 2017.
Dr. Chandrasekera obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. The ensuing animal-centred research endeavours in heart disease and diabetes gave her first-hand experience to recognize the immutable limitations of-and the impetus to shift away from-animal testing. As an experienced scientist, a former animal researcher, a science policy expert, and an animal lover, Dr. Chandrasekera now advocates for a paradigm shift in which human biology serves as the gold standard.
With CCAAM/CaCVAM, her vision is to promote the replacement of animals in Canadian biomedical research, education, and chemical safety testing through 21st century science, innovation, and ethics. Every Canadian now has the power and the opportunity to contribute to this legacy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you, Charu, with all my heart for at very least giving hope that our animal brethren will eventually be free of the slavery that costs so many countless numbers of them their lives and their rightful freedom.

Thank you Charu, for making all these fantastic points. Animal testing is something people are reluctant to think about in my opinion. I think it is either some fear of seeing graphic images and then feeling guilty, or because they have convinced themselves it is necessary, and don't want to see that it is often a farce, which would mean confronting the reality that many of us could probably have been healed or even saved from death if those millions of resources, and donations given to medical charities had been funnelled into human - based research. Both admissions, the ethics of animal testing, and the slow progress of healing humans as a result of severely flawed animal testing, would frustrate and anger people, and they do not feel the strength or desire to deal with this by thinking outside the old ways, if they even think about it at all. Thank you for bringing it to the forefront, both in your work and in this Ted Talk!

Thank you Charu for sharing these compelling facts for the need for change in health research, and for bringing your vision into Canada's reality. May Canadians and all of humanity evolve to embody the wisdom of our souls so that our dis-eases are healed intelligently, while living in harmlessness with the sentient animal souls on this Earth. So much love has been lost, but it can be regained. There's always Light for our choosing! An abundance of blessings for this purposeful work that is from your heart. Dr. Charu Chandrasekera is the perfect specimen or speciwomen of the scientists we want in this space age. I appreciate the old science but it's time for them to get an update on compassion. For animals who are tested for no reason, for patients who have been treated wrong. There's never any excuse for animal abuse. We can do better than being animal abusers.

I am autistic and will point out that autism is a natural neurological difference, not a disease.
