“Underrated” is one of the most overused words when posting a positive opinion of an artist. For those of us who grew up in the greatest era of rock music, we knew how freaking amazing Gary was. Time and his passing way too soon may have diminished his stature but that does not mean he is underrated. His sound was the standard set for an arena rock show. Guitar technique and lead playing stood up to all others in his day. Stage presence kicked ass. No, to those who have REO records on ORIGINAL vinyl and wore out cassette tapes 40 years ago, Gary isn’t underrated. He stands at the top of the podium.

This is R.E.O. Speedwagon's all-time greatest song, bar none. This song is a full-tilt barn-burner, clocking in at over five & a half minutes of the entire band firing on all cylinders. And you thought that Gary Richrath's "Take It On The Run" solo was great? I mean, it was, but THIS solo is cream of the crop, as well as Neal Doughty's almost equally incredible Hammond organ solo that directly precedes it. This song...is incredible. 🙌🏻

I was stationed in Turkey (USAF Incirlik AB) in 1982. I was shopping in the small rug shops just outside the base entrance listening to this song on my brand new Sony Walkman. One of the turkish shop owners was really curious about the Walkman so I invited him to listen. When this song cranked up I thought his eyes were going to jump out of their sockets, and his smile was ear-to-ear. He offered me several large rugs in exchange for the Walkman but I apologized and explained it was a recent gift and couldn't trade it. Every time I hear this song, this memory follows it.

John Steve What a fantastic experience! Would love to have seen the rug salesman's face. I was in Istanbul in '96, and I know the Turks love to dicker and bargain when trying to do business - it's an ancient 'art' of the Middle East. REO can bring me up out of my chair, and especially with this song.

Hi Infidelity was indeed stellar. 15 weeks at #1, and their explosion onto the pop chart with 4 hit singles is undeniable. But they definitely DID make a conscious change to move towards a "pop" sound, away from the driving, guitar-oriented rock they had been making. In the immediate sense, it paid off, big time. Hi Infidelity was a monster! But most of their follow-ups have been spotty, at best, but mostly mediocre. Their 2nd #1 hit was a monetary success,, but a bit of a cheesy ballad. Elevator music is what we used to call it. And they have that easy listening/soft rock stigma that they'll never really shake. But they made some serious cash.

Like many bands of their era, REO started as a rock band (that appealed to long hairs like me) then got into pop rock and eventually adult contemporary. This album is the peak of their pop rock output.

Need to hear a real jam from them. Highly recommend 157 Riverside Avenue, some boogie woogie piano and awesome guitar as well. I Know several people who this is their favorite REO song. Got to do it off the Live album "You Get What You Play For" though.

Amber mentioned "keep pushin" as a euphamism for roll with the changes, as it happens REO has a great song called Keep Pushin On, I recommend the live version from the 'You get what you play for' album

I cannot begin to tell you how many times I listened to this in the summer of 1977 I believe. I was 17 at the time and our little neighborhood group would listen to this album pretty much daily. This brings back great memories. Thanks for sharing!

I saw them in late 1996, while in the Army...and having loved them as a younger man, I *knew* that a decade or 2 meant that they *couldn't* come close to what they were, right? Damned if it wasn't one of the most amazing concerts that I've EVER had the privilege to experience. 3 Encores!

Oh it does my heart so good to see young people discover the jewels from my generation!!! I forget how many times I've seen REO. The Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa was the most EPIC. They brought the house down! I dedicate this song to myself for my birthday every year, because it's true...you gotta gotta roll with the changes and turn that page to keep life fresh!

This was a Kevin Cronin song, Gary Richrath (guitar) hated it because there was "no room" for his signature sound. While rehearsing Gary finally got pissed and cranked up the distortion and gain on his guitar to express his displeasure. The result is what you hear! A great piano song turning into a rip roaring example of musicianship because of a pissed off guitar player!

I kow you guys did "Can't Fight This Feeling" but it got blocked, as well as "Keep On Loving You". My personal favorite is "Time For Me To Fly". "Take It On the Run" is also a banger. When I was a kid, Kevin Cronin's voice was always pumping out of my big sister's speakers. It's how I became a fan, which I still am to this day. And, because "Roll" is in the title, I'd also like to recommend "Let It Roll" by Little Feat. Great guitar and sax. "Roll With It" by Steve Winwood is also great, and exactly fits what Amber is talking about in this video.

this song is pure jam. love to play it on my drums. and yeah Gary Richrath was a beast. Saw them probably half dozen times. Always a great show. Keep going down the rabbit hole guys. The entire Hi-Infidelity album is bomb. Don't Let Him Go , In My Dreams, Take it on the Run.

Having attended several REO concerts way back then, this was always the most fun song of the show. Whoever opened, would come back out to sing along. And 12,000 concert goers would dance in the aisle singing, "keep on rolling" top of their voices. Just don't get that kinda experience anymore.

GR would usually only play with his volume knob around 60% as to not overshadow vocals etc. however when his riffs came he would crank it up. A great trick by a guitarist that has no superiors
