*Karelia* is a region thats nowadays split between Finland and Russia (i am originally from the occupied Karelia), *Tavastia* is an area in the south, around Hämeenlinna, Tampere, Lahti. *Dvina* is an area nowadays part of Russia where finnic people (people ethnically really close to finns) live. By the time the song was made, Finland was just getting independence, and the wars didnt happen yet.

This was made in 1917 when Finland was getting independent from the Russian Empire. The first public performance was in January 1918, the same day when the Finnish Civil War began. Nowadays it is used as a honorary march of many army detachments and it's played in the beginning of the Independece Day Reception when the war veterans enter the Presidential Palace.

Jaeger is originally german word for hunter, but in napoleonic wars prussian hunters formed light infantry unit named as "hunters" (jaeger). In time of ww1 finnish volunteers went to Germany to get military training and they were trained as light infantry (jaegers) those volunteers came back to Finland in 1918 to help Finland to get rid of russian forces that were still on Finland soil because of chaotic situation in Russian empire (revolution 1917). This song is composed by Jean Sibelius and lyrics was written by voluntary jaeger himself Heikki Nurmio at the time 1917-1918. Little known fact: Jaeger marc have been the honorary march of Finlands defense forces, but it hasnt been singed in defense force public events after 1945 because of the last verse which pointing to "greater Finland" which includes Viena (Dvina) in eastern Karelia and other areas in Russian Karelia. So it has been played for decades but not singed with lyrics in public events

Growing up in the aftermath of the massacre of his entire tribe, he comes to realize that the people who brought him up were also the ones who had slain his family. This reminds Finns who was the oppressor and still is for large regions populated by people sharing linguistic and cultural background with us (and others too). We can forgive but we don't forget. I'm anti war but oppressors from east are not welcome. Lyrics are a bit over the top for me. But I can get where it comes from: the long Russian oppression and getting rid of it for ever, raising the spirit for it. We had to fight to gain and keep our freedom. Price was high but we paid it and it was worth it. And yet again we're facing the threat from east as it has been hundreds of years. I sure wish there's no need but we'll fight again if necessary. And we're not alone

The song is a poem by a Finnish Jaeger in the Royal Prussian Jaegerbattalion 27 during ww1. The Jaegers went to Germany to get military training to possible break Finland from Russia even by arms. Hence why such war depicting wording and theme that there is not yet a homeland. Eventually they would land in Finland in force during the civil war in 1918. This march is the Honor march for a few Jaegerbattalions in Finland. Atleast Kymen jääkäripataljoona (Kymi's jaegerbattalion) and Lapin jääkäripataljoona (Lapland's Jaegerbattalion) have been given the task to up hold the traditions of Royal Prussian Jaegerbattalion 27. The Jaegers are regarded as heroes and the basis of Finnish military training.

He was a Finland-Swede and a contemporary of my grandfather and his brothers and also a childhood friend of them all. He composed the well-known Finlandia hymn, Valse Triste, an excellent violin concerto and several classical symphonies, among other things. He often took the themes of his symphonies from the nature of Finland and in some cases from the Finnish national epos "Kalevala". If you want to know more about the mentality and soul of the Finnish people, Sibelius' music will teach you a lot. His music is very Nordic and consequently very different from Italian music, which should be the interesting part for you.
