Having done the Mille Miglia many times, here's my guide on how to enjoy this crazy event without actually entering a car in the MM itself. Includes the best viewing points, the best driving roads and where to stay.
Many thanks to emrogerstransp... for taking the cars to Brescia and back home again after the event.

I concur wholeheartedly. Now you peasants stay on your side of the class divide whilst I dine on horse ass in Lyon with some of that fresh 2019 wine, none of that 1959 crap for me!! And my Dodge Magnum is the best of all worlds. MB E-class front end, S-class rear end, 120” wheelbase, Hemi grunt, and a timeless shape, rivaled only in modern times by the Porsche Panamera Tourismo. Wagons are superior. Hemi engines are top notch a d easy to maintain, Mercedes architecture is the finest, and American affordability made this all available. Plus my lifetime bumper to bumper warranty means this car will be around longer than the dealership. And if they don’t get their shit together, it might be sooner than later.

Can you imagine the outcry there would be if this event was in London? There would be global climate warming change protestors all over the place, all threatening fire and brimstone with pure vial hatred in their voices. How awe-inspiring it is to see an entire country welcome and celebrate these wonderful old cars being driven and enjoyed in the manner in which they were designed to be. Absolutely marvelous. Italy is an example to the rest of the world. This was just heavenly to watch. Thank You Harry.

Harry - I have been driving back and forth to Rome (from London) for decades. I rarely do France and never go anywhere near Paris. I always get the tunnel and then go through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany down to Innsbruck and then the Brenner pass. No tolls. Or I get off the peage just after Rheims and do N routes down to Basle. I have dozens of different routes and combinations. It's not cheap it's true. One thing about the roads in France - they are bloody good.

GREAT video, thanks. I've subscribed for just two or three years now and these are always a delight. This, during our New York City stay-at-home/work-from-home endurance race vs an insidious virus, really picked up my spirits. I've been to Italy twice. Both visits included Siena and the Val d'Orcia: Seggiano, Montalcino and, further north up the SR2, Tenuta la Campana, a lovely agriturismo in the Crete Senesi between Monteroni d'Arbia and Asciano. As such, I was able to very quickly - per road signs behind you - Google-map your exact spot on the roadside where the SR2 meets the SP24 to Radicofani. Great stuff. When I was a teen in the 1970s my Dad for a good long time had a Fiat 124 Spider. Great memories.

Duetto is sounding lovely. About 50 minutes in - "we're at the top of the Futa pass... just entering the cloud now, and my window winder has come off" - made me chuckle. Gearbox oil could be coming from the top of the gear lever turret.

Great video, not sure about the costing though, although Harry clearly likes to save a few quid even though its hardly needed. I drove last month an Ariel Nomad from the UK down to Barcelona, avoiding toll roads in France adding perhaps 2 hours to the drive time, but saving on fuel costs as more economical speeds and cheaper fuel off the motorway network. Not an economical car, but much more so at 60 than 80 just the same as the Alfa. Eurotunnel - Ive taken it several times and always pay return based on next day where its about 60/70 pounds return, but you are using that as one way, so hence total cost is about 120/140 max this time of year and even easter holidays. So again, way off Harry's numbers. Used Airbnb at a lovely countryside location and again 50 euros instead of the estimated 200. A truck is great if you have wealthy friends with free time and cars, which most of us don't, but this trip can be done for well under half the costs mentioned here. The real question isn't cost surely, its if you want the drive down and if you want to make the drive down as of the adventure... understand those who dont or dont have the time, and if you have done it as many times as Harry, even more so, but for the rest of us.... get driving!

I've been trying to plan a trip from Bucharest to Cambridge via.. economical means, let's say, and it's usually between 25 and 30 Hours to drive whenever I check Google Maps, which is only a little over a day. As a recreational cross-country driver, do you reckon it could be done in one go? I've had to stay up for work sometimes almost 72 Hours at a time, and during one trip here in Romania drove over 12 Hours due to bad roads and slow traffic during some awful December weather. The car I'm planning to use is a petrol '03 SAAB, at civilized speeds (80-100 Km/h) to avoid Police troubles and get as good mileage as possible. Or do you think it's mandatory to split it over 2 days (I wanted to avoid that since it's basically a loss of 8-10 hours to sleep/eat).

@@vtr0104 For your safety and more importantly in this case, the safety of those around you, there is no way you should attempt to drive more than 10/12 hours in a day. It is the same as driving drunk. Yes I am sure you could do it, maybe we all could, but there is no prize for doing it and the risk far outweighs any inner feeling of "yes I made it in one go." Driving while tired should be an offense the same as under the influence.... DON'T do it please. Also cant see the big deal of taking 8 hours longer, you sleep most nights, so why not when your and other's lives depend on it. Enjoy it, but do airbnb it....!

Thank you once again for a real review with a down to earth feeling of the rally. And yes I think modern stuff maybe ruin a bit the feeling of the rally, even more then they are overtaking with no respect for the classic cars... But anyway a real dream to do a trip like this through Italy spotting Mille Miglia, big thanks for this long format video to approach the very best of Italy, and the Duetto, perfect car for the business!

I've done the MM myself 3 times, 99, 2000 and 2001 and I have some wonderful memories, my clients cars were an OSCA MT4 1500cc and a Fiat OttoVu V8 2litre (one of only 12 lightweight cars made). The Italian people make the event in my view, their enthusiasm and support for the historic re-enactment is something to behold, with huge cheering crowds literally everywhere! quite a fantastic experience which I'd recommend to anyone..

Mercedes Benz should be ashamed if itself for the behaviour of it's sponsored cars on open public roads. A couple of fatal car crashes due to those idiots could well cause the end of the event. Corporate Mercedes should try to understand that the Mille Miglia was not created as an advertising platform for it's bloated pimp-wagons.
@alastairworth7567

Completely agree. From the perspective of the alfa those overtakes were suicidal. And I suspect probably looked the same from inside the Mercs. Mercedes of all people should know the cost and implications of a motorsport crash that kills innocent people. Le Mans 1955....

For anyone who hasnt been to Mille Miglia - I had done both the finish at Brescia and also a stage stay over in Bologna: both we amazing. There is a super great atmosphere. Brescia centre where they finish is beautiful so that is a nice place to see it end. Bologna is an amazing city and actually you got closer to the cars - the first finishers stay in Piazza Maggiore in a sectioned area but the overspill drive through the streets and most areas have no barriers so you can literally high 5 the drivers and see the cars up close. If you love old cars then this is the Mecca and to see them being driven and some of them driven hard too is awesome. Loved this episode Harry!

Dont know if its still running but there was a motorail train that ran from Verona in Italy to Dusseldorf in Germany overnight. We put the car on the train aboard a vehicle carriage, then had a private two berth cabin with washing facilities in the forward passenger section. Dinner was served in the dining car onboard and was like something out of the Orient Express (not quite as high standard but still very good) We only travelled one way frm Italy to Germany on aour return trip an boarded the train at Verona in the late afternoon, arriving fresh as a daisy in Germany at 8.00 am after having Breakfast aboard the train. Cost a couple of years ago was about £700 but there are much cheaper options, (shared cabins, a sandwich meal) Cut the journey to Norther Italy out completely.
