When you take a mark, you can either play on immediately OR stop and take a kick or handball. If you're within goalkicking distance (generally within 50mtrs of the goal) you get 30 seconds to start your run up and kick. The umpire will tell you when you have 15 seconds left. In any other area of the ground you have approx 8 seconds. If you take longer the umpire will call play on and the opposition is then allowed to try and tackle you. Most of the marks in this video are taken by the attacking team within goalkicking distance. That's why they all stop as they know the player who took the mark will take a shot at goal.

The earlier marks (pre 1995 or so) are more remarkable when you think that the players weren’t full time - they had day jobs outside footy.

No, you don't get extra points for a speckie(spectacular mark) but it looks amazing and that amount of effort and skill deserves to be celebrated🙂🙂 Great reaction 👍👍👍👍👍

Marking the ball gets you a free kick ( if you choose ) so if you're within range you can have an unimpeded shot at goal . That's why marks inside 50 metres are so important .

As long as you control the ball on the way down, it gets called a mark

heyyyy great video! Watching this actually reminded me of a few things about the sport. I remember my dad telling me that when he was younger, all the players would have regular jobs, and compete in the AFL as a hobby. So, they weren't really getting paid for playing, unlike today. In schools we would play this game called marker's up. Where one player would be right behind the goal and kick the ball. The rest of the players would be on the field, and if you marked the ball, you would replace the person at the goal. It was really fun because there might be only a 5 people playing meaning the players on the field would always be trying to get the ball. With 20+, people would be all spread out across the oval. Also, if no one marked the ball, people would still run to it and tackle each other and such, and try to kick it into the goal. It was sooo much fun. great vid!

We Aussies just love it when any player flies high for a mark.

If a game is close scores & sometimes it can be a spectacular mark (specks) and then a goal can win a game so everyone gets excited.
@L3onOfKings
@L3onOfKings 3 года назад
The players get excited with many of these marks mostly because they will be getting a shot at goal. If you mark the ball, you get to take a kick from the spot where you caught the ball. The significance of the match and/or how close the game is, will also play a role in how excited players and fans get.

When they take a mark that player who has marked the ball it’s basically a free kick that why the umpires always blowing the whistle after a mark, the player who took the mark gets 15 secs only and then the umpire call play on or the player doesn’t have to stop after mark they can keep running but it’ a good way to get the ball to your end and score with out the opposition getting possession of the ball and I forgot to if they mark the ball in there forward 50 metre arc they get 30 seconds because 90% of the time they will shoot for goals from inside there, u can see two arks at each end of the field with 50 marked on it that’s why they celebrated to when they mark it they will be having a shot for goal

They stop the play after a "mark" (catching the ball on the full from a kick) as a mark earns a free kick. They then attempt to pick off teammates, ideally for another mark, or just to get the ball to them. There is also the option to play on if there is advantage in doing so ( if the play is going their way, someone is free to pass to, or they can freely run down field, and choose to do so.)
@juliewillard6932
@juliewillard6932 2 года назад
They stop the action because the mark was taken with over 15 metres distance (approx) so he now has the time to take a breath, make an uncontested, calculated kick either at goals or to somebody closer

A mark is ANY catch where the ball has travelled 15 metres or more. Jumping on someone's back just looks cool, which is why they make the top 50 list - it's not a requirement. If you take a mark, you can stop and have a kick during which no-one is allowed to tackle you.

Does anyone actually believe Gary Ablett's was a legitimate Mark?
@consciousbeing1188
@consciousbeing1188 3 года назад
I think it depends largely on if you're a Geelong fan or just a fan of the Cocaine Cat himself. Ablett was definitely one of those players you either loved or despised with nothing much in-between so that tends to skew the opinions on whether or not it's a legitimate Mark. In the end though, it doesn't much matter because the umpire called it a Mark so football history recognises it as a Mark... Anyone else's opinion doesn't really matter. Fans generally love to hate the umpies but we don't have the greatest sport in the world without them.

I'm an Essendon supporter and I believe it was a mark, it falls out of his hands as he crashes down. In order to take a mark, all you need to do is stop the ball's momentum with your hands and have some form of control before you hit the ground.
@PjRjHj
@PjRjHj 3 года назад
@@L3onOfKings Valid point, but do you think he actually had control? I guess my issue is that I've seen a few of these reaction vids to the Greatest Marks, and I always wince at the Ablett one as so many of the foreign viewers are left with the impression that Aussie Rules has a really weak interpretation in what constitutes a fair catch. That would "incomplete" in Gridiron Football and not a Mark in either Rugbys'
@L3onOfKings
@L3onOfKings 3 года назад
@@PjRjHj I hear what you're saying. It can be confusing for the newbies to the sport, I can understand that. If you take a look at the mark in slow motion, you see the ball switch from his left hand to his right arm, he cradles it with his right arm, THEN hits the ground and the ball pops out. Take a close look. For a newbie to the sport, yeah I can see why they wouldn't understand. As far as I can see, he clearly controlled it and cradled it in his right arm, the ball was laying still in his arm before it was bumped out. That is a mark in my eyes. I wouldn't listen to the commentators, they are all old with bad eye sight. :) Btw, you should never compare rules between codes of football. It's a baseless argument really. Different sports have different cultures that they are built on. There is plenty of grey area in AFL, lots of decisions by the umpires are up to interpretation, it's not so black and white like NFL.
