It's taken nearly 2,000 years, but regular people will get to feel what it is like to walk on water thanks to a project by the artist Christo, "The Floating Piers."
Christo unveiled his new temporary installation on Lake Iseo, a 3-kilometre (1.9-mile) floating bridge made up of 200-thousand floating cubes.
Under Christo's guidance, workers have been assembling the floating cubes to create a runway to be clad in bright yellow fabric on Iseo Lake in Northern Italy for a 16-day outdoor installation.
"The Floating Piers" will be open to the public for free 24 hours a day starting on June 18.
People will be able to walk on the piers for as long as they want.
Visitors will be able to experience what walking on water "really" feels like, as the 70,000-square metre platform adapts to the waves and all water movements.
About half a million people are expected to visit, according to project manager, Wolfgang Volz.

Christo pays for each project himself by selling prints & paintings of the art. It is free to anyone to experience. Each project has multiple social, economic & political aspects. Most projects require getting groups to agree that had never agreed on anything in order for the work to take place. The pieces take decades of patience and meetings to get the permissions and agreements, and Christo considers that process and all the people involved to be part of the art, not just the physical transient objects. The projects bring many jobs to the areas, and an unusual experience & discussion of art to the people who live there. The discussion is part of the art, as is your reaction. Everything is recycled and then returned to as it was.

May I know how much the artist is paid for this? And who pays? I love art in nature, I love his concept of the planet itself as his canvas. I love his use of orange or saffron. I love the Buddhist view that once art is made, like the Mandala, it is dismantled or erased. It is supposed to be about humility and the impermanence of things. But Christo does not dismantle it...he sells it. He is not any different than many Westerners who want huge amounts of money for huge projects...lot of which is about owning, selling and showing off. How many people can come to this small picturesque town to see and experience his art? Only the very rich who will take photos and videos and talk incessantly about their unique experience. And someone will write a book on it ten years later about his once in a lifetime experience with Christo's art. And Christo makes fun of computers, but the engineering that went into lot of his work is wonderful including the German company that make the saffron cover for the pier using some unique materials that can wrap, stay in water and shift colors with the sun. That all requires engineering and use of computers to develop. The real artists are the engineers, Christo is just a designer and a choreographer And he is arrogant. Playing with saffron has not taught him anything. May I suggest he contribute some of this to poor people, poor artists and wonderful monasteries on mountains and lakes that are truly spiritual. And let him do his work in the slums of the world to give poor people hope, a sense of creativity and beauty around them....not just mega stuff for rich people to pass time.

Computers are involved, and the engineers are part of the art. Is real experience in real time with real people, not CGI, not virtual, not imaginary.
