Is it a sin to love Zin? Let's find out! Full wine tasting details here: winefolly.com/episode/primiti...
In this tasting Madeline Puckette compares Italian Primitivo with American Zinfandel. Here's the kicker: one of these wines is almost a decade old! For Zinfandel, that might be too old. But is it? Can Zinfandel wines actually age?
Find out more about these wines and Zinfandel here: winefolly.com/episode/primiti...

I am a Zin fan. Lodi, CA has some wonderful Zins as does Russian River area. In the Sierra foothills they nice wines. All have different options for the grape. Lucky I’m 20 minutes from Napa

I'm pushing 80 years old and have drank a lot of vino in my life, starting with the home made stuff in a mason jar, courtesy of my grandpa (made from concord grapes).. Zinfandel is the one wine that has found its way to the pinnaicle of my wine preferences. They are big tasting wines and that is what I love about them. There are two kinds of zinfandels: Big old good ones and good ole big ones. When President Richard Nixon penetrated the Iron Curtain between the USA and China by being the first president to ever visit china, he took a case of Zinfandel to give to the Big Guy in China. What else??

"Get your date drunk." Ha, ha I love it! Zin for sin! Zinfandel isn't one of my favorite grape varieties - there's an awful lot of really bad Zin out there - but when it is done right, it can be smashing. I've been a fan of Primitivo for 20 years or more, long before it became fashionable. A lot of those Italian wines have a sort of dirty, earthy finish which is quite attractive. Good pizza wine.

Love your work as always! Just to confuse things even more, I read an article suggesting the real origin of the Zinfandel grape is actually Montenegro; from a grape called Kratosija! Evidence suggests that it's been grown there longer than Croatia.

Many Napa wineries purchase Lodi grapes for their wines, which makes me very proud as a native to the Central Valley. Thanks for your expertise and some historical background! When does one decide that it's raspberry sauce vs just raspberry? I feel like I am unable to come up with the same vocabulary to associate the flavors. I don't think I would ever say "scorched blackberries" as a descriptor. Never say never, I guess.

One thing I don't like about Primitivo is that they tend to be sweet and have a lot of residual sugar (up to 18g/l). I'm curious if Zinfandel are as sweet or if you can find real dry wines...
@Winefolly
@Winefolly 2 года назад
I've seen a fair amount of dry Zinfandel and Primitivo wines in my days looking at tech sheets. I'm curious though, which ones have 18 g/L? That's pretty off-dry for this particular wine!
@jicklesjingles8134
@jicklesjingles8134 2 года назад
@@Winefolly thanks for your quick reply! I think I wasn't precise enough so I try to clear that up : Concerning the appelation 'Primitivo Di Manduria DOC' and 'Primitivo Di Manduria Riserva DOCG' producers are allowed to make wines with a max. amount of 18g/l residual sugar. I'm not sure if there are any wines that really have that much sugar but many are very off dry. Over 10g is easy to find... While I would define 'dry' as max. 4g/l as it is in many other areas of Italy and countries (e.g. France).

Elderberry wine ruined grape wine for me (as did blackberry wine and blueberry wine), kind of like the way salt water fishing ruined fresh water fishing for me (per the saying 'One man's trophy is another man's bait'). I've been a winemaker since 2005 and I've made all kinds of wines (grape included) and in my opinion Elderberry wine is in a class all by itself (there are dozens of articles on winemaking posted online by gurus who have been making wine for decades who say the same thing). Then Blackberry. Then Blueberry. Then Cherry. Then Pear (the Romans regarded pear wine as their favorite, and there they were in the middle of one of the world's premier grape growing regions). Then apple, fig, tomato, then grape (if you don't believe it, go to some of the winemaker's forums and see how grape wine rates on the preferable wine fruit scale.

ramesh ramesh a bit of a misnomer here because the brand doesn’t determine the healthiness of a wine. I would recommend you seek out “dry” wines (no sugar). Technically, less sugar = more healthy.

Great Question! While the variety originates there, the majority of plantings of this variety are in Italy and the United States. Also, distribution for Croatian wines in the US and elsewhere is relatively obscure because not many people know they make wines there (low demand).
