Imagine Italy having the worst experiences in losing at pens 1990 semis with Argentina (World Cup in Italy) 1994 final with Brazil (World Cup in USA) 1998 quarters with France (World Cup in France) In all occations they had a team that could win... simply luck wasn't there

Looked like he was caught off-guard by the speed of the action. I doubt he had the reflexes to consciously do anything more than stick a foot out. Besides which, he isn't a defender: it's not even his job to make goal line clearances. He's just a striker with a good defensive workrate. It was the defensive job before the shot and for most of the match that was embarrassing for England.

I have nothing but respect for the 3 lads who missed for England. Anyone who steps up in that scenario deserves it. I firmly believe Southgate was trying to make a virtue signalling point with his choices for the last pens. (But the English should have easily won that game, especially with the start they had. Southgate blew it. Totally gifted the initiative and momentum to Italy during the ninety mins)
