If energy-positive nuclear fusion is possible, it'll usher in a new golden age for mankind. ITER is the most important step currently being taken towards that.

Iter is not even close to energy-positive. If you turned it into powerplant, total energy gain would be about 0.5 and only with assumption that reactor would work continuously. In real life it will be supplied with huge amount of energy even when there's no plasma in reactor at all, so it would be even much less then 0.5. The number they always give Plasma Q=10 is irrelevant in terms of practical purposes. Still, it's giant leap forward.

from what i've heard, the superconducting magnets of iter are already "obsolete" but iter will allow us to learn a whole lot, and a commercial successor will enjoy a couple of decades of material science progress, thus my outlook is bright. i am sure we will consume more energy but burn less fossils in couple of decades

@@drab2000 Energy gain is undefined because it's not designed to produce electricity. If you want to engage in useless nitpicking, as long as there is even a little bit of fusion going on, there is a net energy gain.

Thank you Mr Mitchell, and everyone at ITER. This information may be above my pay grade, and I may require watching it another dozen times before any of it becomes a coherent picture. But I have a better understanding of the many technical hurdles you are dealing with, and the hard work required by all. I want to give you the highest compliment I can think of. A really interesting deposition of the magnetic components, I hadn't realised they were so complex. On the side of magnetohydro-dynamics: I know the initial trial will be using the diverters to extract the heat, but can't you use the plasma directly to produce a dc voltage using magnetic deflection of the +ve and -ve ions in the plasma to collecting electrodes ?

Why is it taking so long to build...?? I think by the time this one is built all the commercial small tokamaks in the US will be finished and copyrighted and sold to car manufacturers and we cant then get one out of our car and run our house hold energy from it...?? tell me its not so..

Yeah, fusion patents and announcements are a regular phenomena here. Much more targeted to finance majors than physics majors though.... P.T. Barnum would be proud.

Very Good Having replaced two TF Coils and removed and repaired the P1 Coil twice at JET I wish you luck. 100% reliability of a prototype will be a first! Are the compressive loads on the P1 linear or some rotational torque that destroyed the JET P1? We got it right in the end. I hope that you are more successful.

JET is a bucked design, meaning the TFs push radially inward on the CS modules (one of which is called P1 in JET), and the TF overturning moment can cause CS (P1) rotation, which is what failed on JET. Since the ITER TFs are not bucked but wedged, there's no risk of CS rotation. The precompression ITER is applying to the CS is in the axial direction, which keeps the modules in place when they are charged in opposite directions and want to fly apart or laterally displace.

You are right, its a monumental challenge. Also every nation involved wants to learn everything, so if you need 12, you cannot get 12 identical coils from one manufacturer, you get them built in 4 different nations on 4 different sets of machines by 4 different teams, and then they magically come out identical with identical properties. I want to learn about the construction manual for something like that. It makes building a 4-engine jet airliner where each engine comes from a different manufacturer from a different nation look easy. Likewise if you are into quality control, testing and/or certification, having worked at ITER puts you at the very top in skill level.

It would be the first time we try going for energy gain, so it is more or less to be expected. And I assure you it will not work exactly as expected. That’s what science is about. So we will use the new findings to refine our hypothesis and try again. I am sure the proponents of the newer small tokamaks with stronger magnets will be very glad of having this new data, whatever the final energy output of ITER. Of course it’s always more cheerful to have things work out, but one does not get that by wishing it for Christmas.

what happens - some $$$ lost but that is still a chump change comparing to the space station cost. Iter at least promises some practical application whereas space station is just a waste basket.

ITER is in no way shape or form built to be a power station, as such it's not optimized for power production, but for testing. lets say you had the idea of a vacuum cleaner. You request funding to make one, noone is sure you can make it suck things up a tube, so you say, if you give me this much, I'll prove it can suck things up a tube. How much do you, on your first vacuum demonstrator, care for the length of the cord? You also want to try it for yourself, do you A: Install a motor to try a wide variety of forces, to later decide on the most optimal one B: Guess and have no possibility of trying any configurations other than exactly 1? Your first vacuum for sure won't be some electrolux model we currently have, I'm sure you can see that, right? Before you go on to prove viability as a power station, you need to make sure you can actually make a plasma in the first place. This is too advanced to skip steps, if you do a bit of research on fusion you will see that there are 100s of questions ITER will try to answer, that will then give us direction exactly what needs to go into a commercial power station (Or if all our predictions turn out to be wrong, steer onto another path) I'll mention a few things here that are necessary but adds to the power used to run the facility, you are free to argue against any of them if you don't think they make sense. Heating the plasma, this will be done using 3 different methods, Ohmic heating (Basically inducing heat through the magnetic field) Neutral beam injection (heated neutral particles injected straight into the plasma) and microwave heating. What is the optimal ratio of the 3? We are not 100% sure because simulating a plasma is VERY difficult and notoriously hard to get done, as such all 3 heating methods are over dimensioned so you can try out different ratios, finding the optimal ratio to heat the plasma most efficiently. As you can see here we can't know the most efficient way until we try it, and if we try to built efficiently, we can't try, this is why this is a test bed, not a power plant. Cooling of the heat injection and plasma bleed off. As all 3 heat injection methods are oversized, their cooling needs to be as well. Plasma in magnetic confinement becomes uncontrollable after a while, there is a theory on how to counteract this by purposely opening a hole in the magnetic field and cooling the bleed off. How much do we need to bleed off? What is the least possible bleed off we can get away with? We don't know, so we need more cooling to be able to deal with this as well. Then we have lithium6 tritium breeding, will this occur at the rate we expect? If we get excessive reactions guess what we need? A way to deal with the heat. There is also no attempt to salvage any waste heat from the cooling, as that will add more systems and more complexity, and that is not what ITER wants to do, we know we can use waste heat from cooling for both power generation and heating homes, but this isn't calculated in the ITER draw at all, because no such systems will be built, and why would they? We know everything we need to know about that because making use of waste heat is something we do every day all over the world. ITER will also run a vast array of super computers and particle detectors, making sure we can monitor and understand the plasma as this will be our firs time having one active for more than a split second. These particle detectors won't be necessary when you build a power station, sure you still need to monitor the plasma but you don't need CERN level equipment telling you exactly what you are getting out of every little reaction. The magnetic field confinement is also over dimensioned, because what if the machine does something we don't want it to do? If the entire machine is ruined instantly we will be set back a decade at least, so better over dimension. Can you see why it makes no sense trying to optimize it for power output vs input now? And this is just a few of the things, there are 100s of theories that will be tested once we can keep that plasma burning, all requiring different conditions.

@@Divinicus1er how many billions of euros? The staff is there to set all this up, why does the average streamer have better quality production. The guy is standing there rocking from side to side in a clear green screen. Never heard of an overlay, is there no room anywhere in the world where you can give this presentation from in a human environment 🤔 even a lecture hall in a university but no in some backroom studio. Do they run those experiments with the same amateur hour mentality. Don't get me wrong I like Iter as a project but come on give us the taxpayer a feeling of appreciation. Are they "science"not proud of what is being provided to them to enable them to make their mark on the world forever. So maybe you should suggest a producer that does now how to make content that is more easy on the eye and only things that are spoken about are on screen

@@mfanto1 That they even do presentations for the public is relatively new, they could be doing all this without doing stuff aimed at the public. Earlier all you had were weekly meetings you could attend in person where they do short talks and discussion, not recorded, only understandable if you have a ph.d. in physics. ALL of non-military scientific research, not just this but EVERYTHING, includng biology, social studies, history, NASA, i really mean EV-ERY-THING is like 0.5% of GDP, probarbly less. If you want to help, you can, convince some of the long-format youtubers that do 2-3 hour interviews also as a podcast but with well-produced videos to interview some of these guys.

Not sure what the issue is. Was well presented and made good sense for laymen like myself. I kinda get the feeling that people who can't get value from this might be focusing on irrelevant details or something, I don't see the holdup. Anyway I'd rather effort went into ensuring it works rather than fancy presentations. Media fluff is just that, this was genuinely informative and eye opening with just the right amount of detail and explanation IMO.

The real take away here, sadly, is we can't bank on fusion to save us from a climate disaster. Even if ITER goes perfectly this machine is far to complex to turn into a commercial plant and have any hope of being profitable. As a science experiment I think it's amazing but we're kidding ourselves if we think this technology will be commercialized in a time frame that is relevant to the climate crisis.

It's better if he doesn't, this way you can work on your inadequate concentration and ability to tune out irrelevant minor distractions. I was mostly looking at the diagrams any & hardly noticed (playing on TV, not small phone screen or something with low view angle). I'm normally easily distracted (spectrumy) and wasn't so if you can't watch this there's lots of room for improvement in that area for you
