Ithaca Model 49-S (single shot) lever action 22lr
The end of the ejector was broken off and had evidently been run long after its initial breaking. This had caused further damage to the area of the barrel below the chamber that had to be repaired by welding.
These two videos show this repair.

Very good, I've been a gunsmith for Appalachian Gunsmithing for 21 years and I thank you for the help on the 49s that would probably have taken me three or four hours to do that. The customer said just put it in, they have no clue what it takes. Keep up the good work. Thanks, David

Thank you for posting this. My dad gave me his old Ithica M-49. Hasn’t been fired in over 50 years. Disassembled, cleaned, lubed and replaced the broken firing pin. Fun little rifle to plink with.

when you reinstalled the spring and rounded detent pin in the hole at the bottom of the block you forgot the Bolt Pivot Lock Pin which is a double flat ended small pin that goes in hole first then the spring then the rounded detent pin. It locks the bolt pin in the receiver. If in error you attempt to drive out the bolt pin before removing the lever first this lock pin gets sheared off. The spring should not ride in the groove of the bolt pivot pin . Lever comes out first, then remove the detent pin, spring and this lock pin before driving out the bolt pin.

awesome video. there isn't much info on repairs, cleaning and such on the Ithaca model 49. There are many gunsmiths who won't even touch one. Thank-you for giving such an informative and detailed video that allows us to do the repairs that we need to ourselves.

I wish I would have known. I took one in for repair and the guy charged me nearly $200 and the rifle still doesn't work. You stick a round in and it wont eject it. It will fire the round and the casing wont eject either. You stick a round in and it sticks in the barrel so tight you have to push it out with a rod. So I dont know. I guess the rifle is more complex than i thought.
@ApparitionRune
@ApparitionRune 3 года назад
It's actually a very simply designed gun. After years and years of use, the ejector gets worn our and can't catch the rim of the round. It's common on these. I believe there are replacement parts still available. Hold on to that m49. Every year there are less out there and we may be holding future collector items.

I believe the receiver is aluminum if you would have heated it a little it would have expanded faster than the steel barrel and would remove a lot easier. I have been there done that. Not criticizing just suggesting. Have a nice day.

You do not have to do a total strip down and removal of the barrel to replace the ejector. Open the action, drift out the barrel retaining pin, and remove the ejector with tweezers or needle nose pliers. Insert the new ejector pin, pushing in on the end so the notch clears the barrel retaining pin. Insert barrel pin enough to retain ejector. Place a spent casing or snap cap in the breech and close the action, then open again. The ejector should stay seated until the lever is fully down, and then should kick the casing out and bounce it off the block. If the ejector doesn't stay seated, you may have to file a touch off the forward edge of the rearward notch. You may also need to clean the trip lever and its spring. But it won't catch at all without a casing in the breech. If the casings don't pop out cleanly, check the breech. It may have been peened from dry firing.

Taking out the bolt pin before the lever is a great way the break the bolt pivot lock pin. I cringed when you started pounding on the ejector trip pin from the wrong side. It is splined like the other ones you told us about.

The plunger and spring do come out of the lever. The plunger pin has cut out slots on it. The the main pin that fits through the lever and receiver intercedes with those slots to make sure it doesn't come out. My own 49S has a different set up on the mag tube. It has a dovetail in the barrel that the mag tube fits into securely. Wish I could share the pictures.

I hate to be "that guy" but if you look at the video, you drove all the pins out from Left to right except the one that you said was installed backwards (which you drove out from right to left). You even say (at 12:27) "Remember, left to right". I think it was installed correctly to begin with. Again, I'm not trying to be a pain, but I thought you might want to edit the video to reflect that the pin was indeed installed correctly.

So as I was taking mine apart inside the bolt you have the detent and the spring. I am missing that spring mine had what looked to be a broken piece of another detent. I have scoured the internet and can not seem to find the spring is there a website you use to find these parts? Thank you

Mine doesn't seem to have the barrel set screw, just a small brace about an inch back from the end of the dummy tube with a tiny pin horizontally through it. I'm not sure of the year on mine, it was given to me by the new owner of an old barn
@teamklr2bar

Jman2896 Yea most guns seem to have variations as they are made over a period of years. Also field expedient modifications are made to many that make them appear different. haha I was not sure if you were just making a statement or actually asking a question so if you were asking and looking for some feedback on that please elaborate on your question and I will get back to you. Thanks!

I need to replace the firing pin on the one I have for my grandchildren to plink with. I can see several items that really don't need to be removed to accomplish this task (e.g. fore end stock) but am not sure of some of the other items (butt stock, hammer spring assembly, trigger, hammer, etc). I want to take apart the minimum required to install the new firing pin. Any suggestions on just those specific items required to be removed to remove the bolt group?

I am happy I found your video because I have been wondering if there is supposed to be a screw that you show at about 7:50 of the video which you put in print on the screen that you say does not have to be removed.Well I see there should be a screw and a spring under it as well.I got an M49S from my Dads property after he passed away a couple of years ago and that screw and spring are missing. Do you know the part names or part numbers for them so I may try and locate them and put them into my rifle? I have shot the rifle and it shoots just fine so I’m not sure just what the screw and spring are supposed to be for? The rifle functions just fine as it is but I would like to put the rest of the parts where they belong if possible.Thanks much for any assistance and God bless.

On mine there was a second detent on top of the spring which lays inside the block. The top detent sat inside in the groove in the large firing block pin. Anyone else have this second pin? It wasn’t in the video so I sheered the small detent in half when removing the large pin
@DonziGT230
@DonziGT230 7 лет назад
Great detailed video, I'm about ready to tear mine down. I'm confused about he direction of the barrel pin, is it supposed to go the same way as the other pins or opposite? The detent & spring that holds the bolt pin: it seems that the detent should go towards the pin but you put the spring towards the pin; is that the right way? My 'magazine tube' doesn't have the same clamp type thing on the end like yours, it has a small block with a tiny pin in it. I assume that removing that pin will allow the tube/stock assembly out; ever seen that version? Should the ejector toss the shells out like yours or is it normal that it'll only pull them part way out? I think mine tossed them the first time I shot it and last weekend they wouldn't.

Hey when u punched the large pin Out with the level still attached it seemed to pop Right through I have followed ur video step by step and with the lever and detention and spring out I cannot for the dam life of me punch the dam large pin through from the right side of the firearm to the left like you did so easily in your video could possibly be that the lever and detention need to be in place for correct takedown as you did accidentally in your video
@teamklr2bar
@teamklr2bar 10 лет назад
ok, where I show that spring and detent just after 38:16. there has to still be something inside that hole that is keeping the large pan from moving. if you articulate it where you can see in that hole you might be able to spray some gun blaster/brake parts cleaner in the hole to lose it up and maybe get a.22 bore brush up there to clean and pull out the spring or detent stuck in there. whatever is still up there is engaging that large slot in the large pin and won't let it slide past.
@CletusLeonardLee
@CletusLeonardLee 8 лет назад
I had the exact same problem. The large pin was being blocked by something. It looked like a short section of pin was remaining in the recess of the large pin, preventing it from sliding out. I tried a dab of crazy glue on the end of a drill bit ground flat, to attach to the offending pin and pull it out. It did not work. I also tried drilling the dent hole in the bolt larger by 0.004", that also did not work. I finally just ran the 0.004' oversize drill down farther until the offending pin as gone. It appears like it was a second detent installed, or a piece of a detent. TDC, your assessment was accurate.
@waamp6984
@waamp6984 6 лет назад
I had this very problem as well. It seemed that the second detent was wedged in and the only way I was able to get it out was to slowly drill it until it would come out.

Great videos. I have a 49 with a chip out of the ejector. Can't find a new ejector anywhere so will have to get the old one out and copy it. Will probably make the new one out of O1 tool steel but will not heat treat it. I think a tough steel is better than a hardened steel since if it is not tempered properly it will be too brittle. However, that is my opinion. The ejector seems to be a big problem with this gun since everyone is out of stock. Do you have a source for who might have the ejector for sale? Also, where did you purchase your TIG welder? What is the brand and model? I'm in the market. Hope to hear from you. Thank you.
@teamklr2bar
@teamklr2bar 9 лет назад
+Tony Ringler I do not have a source for that part so you are on the right track for repairs. Tool steel will be fine but might look into annealing it some since it cannot be brittle at all and last. The welders that I use are Longevity. The welders themselves are great. I used to be a dealer for them but the company but we had a falling out.

+TDCtactical I'm good with doing it myself. I have the necessary tools and was going to break it down sometime this next week to locate the problem. It appears that the detent pin in the lever is either really worn or stuck too far in so I'll be knocking those pins out to check that too.
