It does my heart good to see lots of videos about the little Ithaca. I found one in a pawn shop over 30 years ago and bought it cheap. It was beat up and abused but very accurate and fun. I taught all 8 kids and now my grandkids how to shoot with it starting with shorts. I cant count how many rounds have been through it just since i have had it and judging by the extreme wear i can only imagine how many before me and the kids. I have a large collection of 22s and this is by far my and the families favorite. Its put food on the table. Rid the property of varmints and provided years of fun for everyone. I have never seen one in person besides mine so your video is awesome for me. Its a treat to see such a pretty gun. Thanks

I was given my M49 when I was 8 years old, in 1966, by a hunter and good friend in my dad's hunting camp, the "Buckhorn Hunting Club" in Santa Clara, NY. I still have it, and it still shoots well.

I'd really like a .22 mag. model 49 but theonly guy I know who has one will never part with it and I don't blame him.@@HangInThereCat

Swell video, I got my model 49 in early 1980's and paid $40 for it. Mine is the standard model with plain-Jane stocks. It has the same front sight as yours. I bought it because I'd burn ammo by the brick at the range using my 10/22 and Mitchell 50rd "teardrop" magazine. I wanted something simpler and less ammo hungry. It's an accurate gun for sure. I like the Peabody/Martini action and (safety conscious) rebounding firing pin. I've shot all rimfire fodder from 6mm Flobert to Aguila hyper velocity stuff and never had problems. Even truncated ammo loads easily. Good training too, having to make each shot count. A very good beginners gun and way better than any air rifle due to its ammo versility. Knocking over (not just hitting) one pound ram silhouettes @ 100 meters with open sights is quite impressive, fuhgeddaboudit.

Thank you! I hear that! I burn through a brick as well when I take my semi 22s out! It's nice to slow things down with the M49, and get back to fundamentals and most of all have fun! Agree that it's a great beginner's gun, definitely will teach my son once he's old enough. Appreciate your comment! Thanks for watching!

@@HangInThereCat- great idea and I'm sure your kid will dig it. When shooting the M49 offhand I hold several extra cartridges between my off hand fingers for quick follow-up reloads. Try it. The semi-buckhorn rear sight helps with accuracy IMHO.

@@martyjewell5683 I'll try that! Been using the MTM Ammo Belt Pouch off-hand with my single-shots, but like that idea, especially on the go! :)

A year or so ago, I picked up a used M49 for a really good price... and I don't remember how much it was. It's the basic model, but it had something special about it. This one had a scope mount, which attaches to the side of the rifle, and will only accept a basic 4x15 scope. The iron sights remain available, with the scope off to the left. So often, these great little rifles go unloved, because people see them and think lever action repeater, and lose interest when they find out it's a single shot. Savage and Stevens (and maybe a few other companies) made rifles exactly the same as the M49, and the parts are interchangeable. I think one of them even made rifles for Sears as well. I have, I think, the Stevens version as well. It even has a brass saddle ring.

These rifles are a real gem! One of my favorite .22's I own! Yes Stevens made one as well, the Model 89; I am keeping an eye out for one too. I appreciate your comment! Thank you for watching!

Hey Cat, nice old rifle. Very nice in fact. Just curious, what the is the tube magazine for? Good shooting as always.

Hey ET! Thanks! The tube is just for looks 😉. Alternatively, the Sears version doesn't come with a tube, and looks awkward in my opinion. It's the funnest single shot I own! Thanks for watching!

Any tips on cleaning and restoring

I primarily use alcohol to clean small parts and coat with a light film of Ballistol. Ballistol is my main cleaner/lubricant for my firearms, works well on wood and leather too! I don't do any restoring, I prefer to leave my firearms as-is 😉. Thanks for watching!

That's true! :( I just got a leather jeweler's sand bag that covers the cinder block completely. Used it on my Marlin 795 Video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rsxA7CYwP6c.html Thanks for watching!
