Every time I see him do that, I always picture a mushroom cloud after lighting the grill like in the 1st Halloween special (Hungry Are The Damned), except no alien ship appears & abducts everyone.
It's so sweet that this is one of the only times Homer says "thanks Flanders", like he's genuinely happy and for once believes Flanders genuinely is complimenting him.
And one of the most tragic when you remember that he was once highly intelligent, now reduced to someone who's even dumber than Homer due to his addiction.
This is one of my favorite segments of all time! The lighter fluid, the Flanders toast, Homer accepting it without a snarky remark, Barney's reaction to the gazpacho, the burger hitting Lisa in the face after her monologue, Marge screaming after Bart first, the entire dirty, slimy, airborne, gag with the pig, and finally Mr. Burns promise that is immediately refuted after seeing said flying pig. Every one of them is perfect on their own, and the fact that they are all back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back just makes all of them even better!
don't forget the joke where Wiggum laughs at the roasted pig's nose while both are very close and in the same frame. Isn't it cool when jokes for an episode are laid out by inspired writers?
damn the worst part about this is how everyone is so happy. Homer is even being nice to flanders. Also isn’t Lisa supposed to be the “smart one”? Wouldn’t she realize the animals are already dead and paid for. All she is doing is wasting the meat, meaning the animals died for nothing
Sometimes when people, especially little kids, feel like they're not being listened to or not being respected, they act irrationally. I think Lisa felt that no-one was respecting her choice to be a vegetarian or that this was actually kind of important to her. But I'm not denying that she acted irrationally and immaturely.
To be honest, this moment would be so bad for Lisa if the series didn't suffer from negative continuity. If Apu's lesson to her of not forcing your beliefs on others had stuck, then this episode would have been a very good turning point for her instead of the moment she became insufferable.
Just think, this episode is decades old, when narcissists like this were a tiny minority, mostly confined to high society. Now they've taken over, and their double standards have divided society and destroyed the planet 💀
It would still be terrible mid episode though in requiring Lisa to act schizophrenic in seeing a lamb for dissecting a worm, Written bankrupt in not being able to write a scene with a two sided argument that manages to valuably challenge lisa's stance, That also creates totem poles to burn in effigy of a "only us vs all of them" scenario (All of the town of Springfield VS Lisa, Apu, Paul McCartney). Ends on a "lisa was right the whole world,THE WHOLE WORLD wants her to eat meat but you know she practices tolerance" Even in the final scene it has to end the episode on the 22 Minute plot by having homer reconcile. Its almost parody of future shows that would lack the better well written joke parts of this episode by having episodes for hot topics (The goobly goos do a BLANK episode) that mostly devolve into 22 minute mouth piece, So yeah mid episode. (Also to kill the bad faith argument that this is good simpsons and lisa is a kid so her opinion dosen't matter, from the episode"Say what? Cartoons don't have messages, Lisa. They're just a bunch of hilarious stuff, you know, like people getting hurt and stuff." This is satire,This is a stance. This is admittance
@@daveyjones18 yes, narcissistic vegetarians destroyed the planet. With their confusing opinions. That's the reason why everyone is divided and the earth is, apparently, destroyed. Gotta love RU-vid comments as a place for political opinions.
i love how homer says "one whopper for the COPPER!" and them immediately after tries again to somehow do a neat burger trick with the spatula when bart is standing right by him... "here ya GO!!!"
Lisa: I made enough Gazpacho for all! Crowd: What’s Gazpacho? Me: A hairy brown elephant that runs a third rate food vendor named after him and still lives with his mother.
That gag with the lighter fluid to this day always gets a good laugh out of me. Homer needs all that fluid for a basic BBQ grill when he's putting enough to try and start a large pit fire 😂
Homer: “It’s just a little dirty, it’s still good it’s still good. It’s just a little slimy, it’s still good it’s still good. It’s just a little airborne, it’s still good it’s still good.” Bart: “Dad, it’s gone.” Homer: “I know.”
@@sasoning By a hamburger patty? Unlikely. I'm pretty sure it would've just slid down the glass. And besides, if she didn't want to smell the meat or hear the guests talking outside...
Yeah, not sure I'd eat that pig after that. It probably grew wings or came back to life or something. Also reminds me of Paperboy 2, where you could hit the cooking pig with a newspaper and it actually scampered off and would usually knock you off your bike.
I love the little joke with the lighter fuel, as it builds on a joke from previews episodes where he would do the same thing and there would be a giant ball of fire. It being a small flame is a great misdirect.
it's just a little dirty it's still good! it's just a little slimy it's still good! it's just a little airborne it's still good!- reminds me of the people that say 'the Simpsons are still good' lol.
This episode really highlights one of Lisa's character flaws. She is too quick to assume her morals are objectively correct and doesn't realise that people have different opinions. When she proudly announces that nobody "has to eat meat," she seems to do so out of a flawed idea that everyone will be glad they don't have to eat any meat, failing to take into account other peoples' opinions. Lisa has a tendency to claim moral superiority, and then assume everyone will agree with her. Really smart writing all together.
@@kratomleaf8937 Not quite. Lisa actually genuinely believes in these morals. Narcissists claim to believe in certain morals to draw attention to themselves. They don't actually believe them. That's why it's easy for them to switch gears so easily (and still be right). It's whatever morals (usually "hot topics") draw the most attention to themselves, hence why "absolute positions" are so often taken on confusing, controversial issues.
Even though this is still in the "golden era", you can tell that this right here is when the writing started shifting towards "Lisa is a douche that will ruin everyone's enjoyment for her own personal ideals." instead of her being a voice of reason. It really isn't bad at all in this episode considering the build-up is people being jerks to Lisa for her opinion, but this is where the seeds were being planted.
shes meant to be in the wrong in this moment but they build it up so you get where it came from, whereas later seasons have her be a nag for no real reason
Nah, all great shows simply run out of material. The trick is to stop making new shows before it becomes painfully obvious that the writers are running out of ideas for the characters. Frazier was a great show that started to get stale in the later seasons, but shows like Seinfeld and Star Trek TNG episodes were high quality even in their final season. The Simpsons simply ran for way longer than it should have if they wanted to produce high quality episodes every season. I have to disagree with you that this episode was a harbinger of further crap to come by the Simpsons. This episode is a good one. But, very few shows can consistently create high quality content past nine or ten years.
Lisa was always the weakest character. I figured that out in the first season when she was the main character in an episode which focused on her depression. It didn't take me until season 5 to figure out that Lisa is the weakest character in the Simpsons.
she's 8. a lot of small children look stuborn , it's part of their development. Lisa is 8 for ever due to the show being in a float timeline. She can grow up to be anything - You can just hate the personality of a child.
@Gabe Davis To play devil's advocate, I think the only reason Lisa is the answer to a question nobody asked is because nearly everyone in Springfield is an ignorant moron; they didn't ask the question because they didn't think to. This is not one of Lisa's finer moments, but overall she has been a major boon for the town.
It worked in this episode which does have a message, Lisa does apologise later after speaking with other vegetarians and learning to let people make their own choices about eating meat or not. Which actually is a good point because there are vegetarians like this. For an eight year old girl it makes sense to first act like this after turning vegetarian. In later seasons, when the show isn't worth watching anymore, the writers don't seem to know how to write her at all though but neither her or Bart act as children anymore at that point. But in the first 9 seasons, Lisa mostly does act like a kid, a smart kid but she tends to be pretty well written and has many memorable moments, a lot of fun moments too. Besides, if she didn't send that pig off the hill, we would not have had the gags that followed.
This is why people hate vegetarians. My parents are vegetarian, but they don't give me shit for eating meat, they don't give anyone shit for it. You can have a lifestyle, just don't force it on other people.
True, when her dad is not messing everything up and doing something he's good at and everyone enjoys it she ruins everything just because she doesn't eat meat.
Henrique Ferreira Don’t forget how much she was bullied before that. Sure, „you don’t win friends with salad“ is funny, but it’s not a nice thing to say. Also, she apologized at the end of the episode and admitted it was her fault.
The best bit is the pig shaped invitations which read “Come to Homer’s BBBQ. The extra B is for BYOBB” Bart - what’s that extra B for? Homer - that’s a typo
There are many classic Simpsons episodes that I love, and this is definitely among the top. Everything in this sequence is full of moments and quotes that makes you keep laughing.
I remember when this first aired. We always watched simpsons every Sunday. And when Mr Burns said "when pigs fly" my dad spat out his beer. Which I thought how is it funny when you know the gag before it's happened. Older me now knows sometimes they are the best types of gags.
0:07 Barney's beer keg (empty) 1:50 Lisa heading towards the keg 1:54 split beer BARNEY FILLED HIS KEG ! these little details really makes this show special
I've hated Lisa's character ever since the episode where she overreacted to Bart destroying her Thanksgiving artwork. But then this episode only cements my hatred for her character qualities even further showing that she converted to Vegetarianism and attempted to make others do the same. You can't always change the world with just your beliefs.
You are right to remind me of that. Bart was in the wrong at first and kids have tendencies to mope in their rooms after a falling out/things not going their way (can't begin to tell how many times I did that during my childhood) but when she started writing a poem about the situation (probably to slag Bart off) it has gone for genuine sympathy to annoying overreaction. It was *this* episode to me that really made me begin to hate her.
@@gunfuego I heard an episode of forensic files where everybody in this family got sick with this illness but one the youngest son when representatives of the health department asked him why he wasn't sick his answer was this he didn't eat the hamburger meat he only eats pepperoni but that was it so after the health department did some investigating and they discovered that this slaughterhouse wasn't doing a very good job with cutting the cows up so the health department probably shut down this meat packing plant because of its unsafe and unhealthy practices 😛😛😛😛
Aint going to lie, Homer was the reason why when i first had my chance at a starting a grill i lighter fluid the heck out of it thinking thats how it was suppose to be done.
Watched this merely in the preview mode with no sound or subtitles, but I knew exactly what was happening the whole time with how many times I watched it as a kid. And it still made me laugh. Ah, the simpsons.
Lisa complains about people rubbing their meat loving lifestyle in her face. Then proceeds to take the meat away from them in an angry fit because they need to see that vegetariasm is right. Flawless logic.
So many people triggered by this one bit of the episode. Bet they didn't even watch until the end because, if they did, they'd know she learns the exact lesson they all accuse her of not learning, i.e. it's a choice that, if she wants respected, she needs to respect the choices of others as well.
thankyou. i dont think people in the comment section are true simpsons fans, instead theyre just outraged and offended and want to vent on the internet about a fictional 10 year old girl, oh well
Yeah, you see that alot in cartoons. People do it all the time with shows as well. Taking it apart and criticising make believe characters. All about immersion. If you don't have that then you don't enjoy it.
No, the episode is bad because Lisa never faces enough payback for her actions, and the lesson supposedly learned is forgotten right after, there is no change in Lisa. So in the end what this episode ends up saying is "be a totalitarian dick, force your arbitrary ideas down everyone's throat and it will be fine, everybody will just suffer and put up with it, no bad consequences for you at all". A lesson well learned by SJWs.
The massive irony is that the video shows everything they are accusing her of doing happening to her first. All of the "all vegetarians are entitled and judgemental" brigade have a complete lack of self-awareness.
Don't underestimate their power. If the writers really wanted it in per-say situation, they would be the strongest and faster father-and-son on this planet!
So lisa ruined a get together in the neighbourhood, destroyed a fence that will cost of ton of money to repair, tried to force people to just stop eating meat and what does she want out of all this? Just to prove a point.... I really don't get Lisa, she takes literally everything so seriously toxic-like, she'd take such drastic measures to make things go the way she wants
Did even watched the end of the episode? She learned with her mistakes, and learned to tolerate and live with people with different points of view. That's THE WHOLE POINT OF THE EPISODE.
