Excellent video of a great trail and splendid scenery! Not to mention a well documented experience. No wonder it was nominated for a best hiking video award for 2017. I liked it so much I've watched it twice now. Recognized a lot of familiar scenery from trips past. Was there one particular spot where you thought 'I don't want to leave here' because it was so awe inspiring?

Hi John. Thanks for your kind words. Much appriciated :-) And yes, there were a couple of places where we did not want to leave. We loved the San Juan mountain range, Elk Creek and Cataract Lake. But also the area around the rail road and when we encountered the moose on the trail. The scenery was spectacular!

@@FriendlyHiker I'm not a through hiker like you guys but I've seen all three locations, having spent a total of about 8 weeks over 12 years volunteering with the Colorado Trail Foundation to maintain the trail. The Cataract Ridge area was my first exposure to the trail in 2006 and it literally blew me away, especially since I'm a flat lander. Stay well and be safe on the trails! I've posted a slide show on my RU-vid channel of some of my experience.

Really good video. America is so blessed with magnificent scenary. Brought back memories of 1986 when I visited Durango and Silverton and Wolf Creek Pass on the Continental divide as a tourist. Hope to go back 🙂 Thanks

So many of us in Colorado take our beautiful slice of nature for granted. I loved your video and your enthusiasm for the world around you. By far the best hiking video I have watched, It kept a smile on Lian face thru the whole adventure. Day 27 was so awesome and my favorite view. I have never hiked out west but the CT is on my bucket list now. Thank you so much this was the most enjoyable video, it was truly trail magic to me sitting watching your video. I wish I could go on an adventure with you. I have to get a knee fixed first . It hurt so bad on my last hike it took me 3 days to hike 19 miles at times I thought I would run out of water I was fortunate to run into some day hiker a newly wed couple that brought me a bottle of water back from the spring 5 miles away as they passed me on the way back to their car. Then about a mile from the shelter a man from Texas stopped and asked me if I was ok and if i needed any help I told him my leg was killing me, he walked to the shelter and left his pack and returned and carried my pack for the last mile. There is so much kindest on the trail God truly works thru people. You guys are so fortunate to have each other and be able to share your adventures together. I wish you both the best in life, love and adventure. Capt. America

The Colorado Trail is so very beautiful in the San Juan mountains. that day 27 was amazing indeed. Lived and hiked Colorado mountains all of my able life,,love them ,,when you think you've seen all there is something new pops up. My purpose in hiking was to fishing alpine waters mostly beyond wilderness boundaries. But as is said for all to " Hike Your own Hike " ..Everyone has their own reason to be there. Your video's are very well done,in my opinion, love to see the trail,but also love to see the overall beauty of what the area has to offer.Thank you for sharing...Stay safe and God Bless...

Great vid! At 7:00 shes holding a "yellow salsify". I eat the unopened flower buds raw. You can also throw them in a pickle jar and the juice will preserve them for later.

Thanks for the great compliment Mike! We did about 20 miles a day on average. A bit lower in the West Collegiate and about 24 miles a day in the last week to Durango. But that was mostly because the friend we met, Tim, had to be there earlier than us. So we did a bit more just to have fun and hang out with him :-)

Stumbled upon your video this morning and immediately remembered watching your PCT video. This was just as spectacular as that one. If someone had only two weeks to hike the Colorado Trail, which section would you suggest for scenery and maybe being Hammock Friendly or should I just buy a tent? Until I get your reply, I'm off to watch your other videos. Thanks for all you've shared!

Thanks :-) This means a lot to us! If you only have 2 weeks you should definitely do the San Juan Mountain Range. AWESOME :-) Roughly from Monarch Pass to Molas Lake. Best part there is roughly after the La Garita Wilderness to Molas. We think, but we like high mountain peaks. Be aware though, these are the hardest parts of the trail and you have to be fit and be ready to deal with high altitudes. Also, because most of it is on high elevation, it means hardly any places to use a hammock. If you do want to use a Hammock, try the lower parts of the trail. La Garita Wilderness is nice but also from Leadville to Monarch pass. It cann be high up there but at least you can find a shelter for a hammock if you descent to the valleys. You have to plan it though. Hammock camping is not adviced on a high elevation trail. Have fun out there !!

what time of year did you guys do this trip. Where were you on day 12-15?

Hi Dennis. We hiked it from mid August to mid September. On day 12 to 15 we were in the Collegiate Mountain range. Coming from Denver, the trail splits at Twin Lakes. Here you can do the lower, easier trail. Or take the high route over the tops of the Collegiate Mountain range / wilderness. That's what we did. That trail is more rugged and tougher but offers spectacular scenery. The two trails join again after about 5 days of hiking.

How did you prepare for the adventure like workouts and stuff? Or is it mentioned in the video?

The preperation is not mentioned in the video. What we always do, is start at least half a year before a long hike with, well, hiking. Every other weekend, we grab our gear and start walking. We live only about 2 hours driving from the Ardennes (Belgium) and the Eifel (Germany). Which are big hills and awsome for hiking. That's where we train a lot to get our muscles and tendonds into shape.

Hi Martin Dohnal. Great that you are going to do it too! Regarding your question. The best and safest way is still a bear proof food container. The lightest one we know of is from Bearikade. Like the weekender or the adventurer. We have that one but did not use it on this trail. Although good, all the containers are a bit bulky. On this trail we used an Ursack bear proof bag. With an Opsack inside to keep it clean and more or less odor proof. On the outside an waterproof bag. If you would like to know more about hiking in bear country, we have written a complete section on bears (camping, behavior etc) on our website. You should definitely check it out. Very helpful. Mind if I ask you; Is there any parts of this trail that are exposed to heights; Hiking along ledges, steep slope traverses, narrow ridgelines with steep dropoffs, etc? Hi. Thanks for your great response. Hiking along ledges, steep slope traverses, narrow ridgelines with steep dropoffs, etc is NOT really part of this trail. Sure there are some ledges from time to time. And those are just a few and only in the West Collegiate and San Juan mountain ranges. But never were they in a way that poses a threat. Most of the time you can also walk further away from the ledge if you want. The movie is very representative. Just a vew spots which are easily avoided if you don't want to get close. Have a great time out there. It's a great hike!

Thanks. Light weight hiking is all about weight reduction. So we left our better equipment with all the lenses at home. This movie was entirely shot with a GoPro 3+ black edition (videos) and a Samsung S5 phone (still photography).

What an amazing video and adventure!! Loved it, thnks for shareing. I was wondering which was your favorite part of the trail. Im coming ti CO in August for 1 week, looking into doing a week long hike. What would you recommend? I loved the last sections and the train. The scenery arround was breathtaking, possibly something like that. Also I wont have any transportation, will be flying into Denver, any recommendations?

Thanks! Much appreciated! Yes you're right the last 2 weeks towards Durango was the most beautifull section. Transport: we don't know what the best option is for you. We thru hiked it and flew back home from Durango. All the best on your hike and do take the train ride to Silverton if you have the chance, it's one of the best in the world :-)

@@dominiquetravels The best thing would be to start at Durango and hike to where the pass is towards Silverton (don't know the name anymore). Hitchhike to Silverton and take the train back to Durango. Check the miles though. I think it might be more than 60. I cant check it right now we are hiking a long distance trail.

Nice! You'll love the hike! I lost about 8 pounds on that trip. But I was somewhat overweight and ate less snacks during the day on pupise. My wife didn't loose any weight. She added protein powder to her evening dinner and breakfast.

Did the thermarest z-lite mat perform well on the hike?

Hi Kirby. We tried it as a sleeping mattress in the past, but found it less comfortable than the thermarest neo air x-lite. It's a bit heavier but for a long thru hike definitely worth it. We now use a small bit of the z-lite as a sit matt. Very handy when the ground is wet and you want to have lunch or a break.

This may be a stupid question... But, as I plan for my first backpacking trip, how does one plan to return to where a car is parked/ home, without having to hike back the whole way?

Hi. Basically 2 things. Hitchhiking and public transport. We hitched a ride from Denver to the start of the trail. Then hiked the trail. Hitched a ride from the end of the trail to Durango. From there you can take public transport back to Denver (I am told. Never checked it since we flew back home from Durango)

How did you get on the train to silverton?

Hi Jason Barta. The trail crosses the railroad from Durango to Silverton. Just before or after the crossing (depending on your direction) you will find a small trail that leads to a spot along the railroad (it's signposted) were you can ‘wave down’ the train. There are signs that show you how to signal the train driver that he has to stop. Another option is to do it when you finish in Durango. The train leaves from the railway station.

For the video we used a gopro 3+ black edition in hd in 1080p with 60 frames ps. For the stills we used a apple phone 5se and a galaxy 5s.

Hi Eileen. That's correct. It was a small source coming straight out of the ground. We normally sterilise the water. But in this case we took a chance.
