I attempted to solo hike the 567 mile Colorado Trail with my three year old great Pyrenees mix Indy this July! This was both of our first thru hikes but we've spent countless days backpacking together. The Colorado Trail was full of beautiful mountain views, fields of wild flowers, and fantastic trail friends. Indy unfortunately had to bail off the trail due to cracked paw pads in Twin Lakes but I loved having him with me for 175 miles and hope we can make him a thru hiker one day. I hope you find some peace and joy in watching Indy hike the furthest he's ever gone before. Hi again Jules,watched the narrated version of your hike. Much more informative than the first one, thanks, you answered all of my previous comments. Loved Indys hiking boots... Still not enough though eh ? bless him. I heard that you live in Durango ? If its the same one, I spent time there and Cortez before staying in the campsite in Mesa Verde Park for several days during 1994. Love Colorado. I live in England but my heart is in the Four Corners.

that first section is brutal hot. I did it with my dog too. he was able to do the whole thing but I almost sent him home at one point. as long as you keep the paws good and it's cool they are happy. we were only doing 15ish miles a day though. we did a few 20 mile days. then we did the CDT together a few years later and I actually had to use booties for that cause we were doing 25+ mile days. I'm glad it all worked out for you both though. you gotta hike their hike though which makes it way more challenging

Oh my gosh, I know exactly how you felt that day on Section 6. I took my dog on Section 3 last September and he got so worn out - it was hot and a long day. He just kept looking up at me like "Can we stop now?". We stopped at every creek and I let him chill out as long as he wanted to, and I gave him all of my beef jerky as "treats". I felt so guilty. I really want him to hike more of the trail with me, but I don't want to put him through something like that again. He's hiked all over Colorado with me, but usually just day trips with lots of breaks. He's in good shape for a 10+ year old dog but...he's just getting older. 😞

The rule of thumb is no more than 10% of body weight so I tried to keep it around 5-7 lbs since he's 100 lbs. He had his bowl, boots, leash, sleeping pad, musher's wax, and one day of dehydrated food on him
