Having 5 producers for this one song, perhaps this is why the song feels spliced dif elements together. It certainly didn’t feel like a 100% JY Park song.
I saw an interview with the writers, and they did not know what the others did in this project. They all had a slice of this song. Its brilliant. I love how this song sounds.

As someone who listened to underground electronic music for a decade (namely minimal) this was an amazing song that's getting mixed reviews which is puzzling to me. So much replayability, complexity in some parts and simplicity in others at the right times, loved the instrumentation too. That last quiet shuffle part before the outro reminds me of some old Pheek/Magda type tracks, as well as the repeating "Ay, ay, ay" vocal, cool to hear in kpop:)
Jordan Sarkisian i personally dislike it because i don’t care for the talk-rapping, and the lack of melody in the chorus. the bass line is good, but there aren’t any positive qualities other than that in my opinion
Autumn Miranda Well those are more opinion based things you mentioned, I was speaking more in terms of the technical stuff. IMO production and layering is really well done, lots of unique samples and possible nods to other genres all smashed together and laid out well, lots of variety in the structure that never left me bored, etc. I actually prefer talk rapping over singing and don’t need a melody as long as a song has good flow and rhythm, but again that’s more opinion based stuff that changes more according to personal preference. But I never usually hear “I want bad production quality with predictable song structure that never surprises me” from most people. On that level I think it’s very good, but people can still like or dislike the overall style differently.
Yes!! Idk why ITZY gets so much from their music production. Their stuff is so enjoyable. I would describe them as electronic funk punk if I had to give a genre, they reall give off that vibe.
Personally, I find this very fascinating to analyze because the production is so complex, but I don't actual enjoy listening to it at all. I love good production quality with non-standard song structure, but you can absolutely have that AND a melody with singing. If I were to write a review of this song, I would mention how interesting it is and note the objective production quality and variety but ultimately admit that I don't enjoy listening to the song. That's why it's getting mixed reviews.
This structure just totally reminds me of Zimzalabim, and I just dig both of the songs so much because they’re just bringing completely different stuff on the table and this is how K-Pop should be headed.
big fan of Rv but Zimzalabim hasn't really grown on me too much. I don't really know why i can't like that song as much as i liked their past music maybe because of the style they went with which i wasn't really a fan of. ICY on the other hand is really something else entirely, it's really hype. XD

this song is a definite bop. I love the weirdness of it. rv and loona composers rarely disappoint. i'm loving all the experimental songs that have been coming out lately.
I agree about Dalla Dalla, definitely Top 5 of 2019. I enjoyed ‘ICY’ as much as their debut. The members seem to have great chemistry and they have so much power in their message of self confidence that it makes the music more fun. 👍✨

@@ccarlos10756 yes! Because SM actually works a lot with "outsider" producers. They have their own but they also work with others. Specially American. (Heck SM even worked with JYP at some point for a SM Station collab)

I like dalla dalla more but I see where they're headed in icy, many funky sound here and this type of song is pretty new to kpop, overall I don't like the lack of vocal based chorus and the bass need more oomph, but I appreciate the effort to move forward, to be new and fresh, it's good for itzy.

Yeah the overall instrumentation was more consistent and less disorienting than Dalla Dalla, I love dalla dalla but it sounds like Itzy and their writers have landed at a solid vibe and style of music (at least to start out with). idk if i like the chorus but this is much better than i thought it was going to be! it suits all the members better than dalla dalla as well, i noticed them all more.

honestly i love icy so much. it just puts me in such a good mood, i get so excited! i'm glad you were interested in it. i loved dalla dalla but icy has me so amazed that it pulls ahead for me.
I've heard the song a bunch of times at this point and honestly can't get behind it. I can get past the crazy instrumental. I mean, I love Red Velvet's Zimzalabim. The only reason I can come up with for really not liking this song is that the vocals just aren't that great in my opinion. I mean, there's not a whole lot of actual singing happening in the song and the singing that is there just isn't anything spectacular. I don't know. Vocals are just very important to me when it comes to music. It's why I tend to really love music that comes out of a certain company.
At first, I wasnt the biggest fan of the chorus but now I LOVE IT! i loved icy and dalla dalla at first listen, you should listen to their whole album! also it really gives me zimzalabim vibes! whole mv shocked me
I like this song a lot, and I think it will grow on me the more I listen to it, but when I first listened to it I just didn't love it immediately. I personally liked Dalla Dalla better than Icy, but that may change

i just heard the song and i really really love it - i feel like it's cohesive but every section brings something new and good in its own right, and I love that hook edit: I think I like it more than dalla dalla also
